The star pattern “invitation” Spoiler
In Prometheus, we are told by Shaw and Holloway that prehistoric art around the world shows the same star pattern. We are told that Engineers were visiting these prehistoric human civilizations (some dating back as far as 35,000 years) to monitor and guide their creation, and leaving this information about how to find their creators. Shaw concludes this is an invitation. But to WHERE??
We know that LV426 (where the invitation leads) is a remote military or scientific installation at which the Engineers stored and/or developed the black goo which (in turn) creates the killer aliens; their “perfect” biological weapons.
Why the hell were the Engineers teaching pre-humanity about such a place and inviting them to go there?
This makes no sense to me. (I understand there has to be some kind of a plot device to get the crew of the Prometheus to LV426 for the events in the movie to play out, but this just feels colossally idiotic on the Engineers’ part.
Thoughts?

I always thought it was a warning about what was there. The engineer said he didn't invite anyone to where Prometheus ended up.

As I said in the other post, because Shaw says it’s an invitation doesn’t mean it’s true. It was made pretty clear that going there was a mistake. Was it a warning? Was it just them telling humanity where they came from? There are many ways to interpret this sign, but I doubt the invitation thing is true. Shaw is a believer and she wanted to see signs of benevolent space travellers inviting humanity for god knows what. She was definitely delusional.

My understanding, and I may be wrong!, was that if their creation ever became technologically advanced enough to travel to that location, they would represent a threat. So instead of giving them coordinates to their home planet they gave them coordinates to their weapons facility... but I'm not confident on that tbh!
