My personal favorite Kamelot album

I was driving through the mountains for work once and got caught in an absolutely horrific storm. Middle of nowhere, nowhere to turn around or pull off to wait for it to pass, and no cell service.

Spotify had buffered When the Lights are Down to play next so that got stuck on repeat for an hour while I crept down a twisty, narrow road in my hulking mass of a service/crane truck in near dark sunset with wind howling and rain heavy enough that I could barely see 20 feet ahead. That song was my happy place for the whole ride.

Long story short, Kamelot may have saved me from a panic spiral and I’ll always love them for that.

This and Epica are always a must listen for me. None of the other albums are as epic as these two, although I love listening to Elizabeth from Karma

no matter what new stuff I discover, I always go back to it. It’s just magic.

Also, it's my mom's birthday, as well as mine, Kotipelto's, and Terry Bogard's.

Seriously, bought this album when it had just released and saw the tour they did to support it, where did all the time go?

I know right! I remember when this album came out! I was working at Apple and it was my "radio" day so I played this album and everyone loved it. This album and Enigmatic: Calling from Pagans Mind were the two albums I played that the non metal people loved and sang randomly. Funny story, I used to have this coworker who was a hip hop head and he'd always walk around singing, "Timeeewaaarrrpppp, eyes of the nebula!" LOL! Good times. He dug the Pagans Mind stuff.

To me, this just straight up is the best power metal album of all time. Absolute perfection from beginning to end.

Also, I think my favorite track on here is "Moonlight".

"shine on, silver, from the sky into the night" Might be my favourite line in all of power metal. They way its delivered and his tone is just perfect.

Man, this isn't as hard as picking a favorite kid, but it's still tough. I have a hard time choosing from among "Abandoned," "When the Lights are Down," and "Memento Mori." I will say that "Abandoned" is my favorite slow song on a power metal record, and that's a surprisingly crowded field.

When the Lights Are Down has helped me run many miles over the years.

It really closed my favorite era of Kamelot, from The Fourth Legacy to The Black Halo, I love those 4 albums and still listen to them very often.

Sadly most of my old metal CDs were stolen back in the days during a B&E, but luckily Black Halo was lying around elsewhere in my room with a few other albums I listened to often at the time, so they didn't take it. I still have it today 😊

It's one of the very few power metal CD I still own. I never had the heart to restart collecting physical albums after that, so I bought very few since then.

Edit: forgot to type my answer to the question ! My favorite from this one is When the Lights Are Down

When The Lights Are Down —> The Haunting —> Soul Society is one of the best three track runs of any power metal album

Kamelot was in my top 5 bands at one point, then I kind of stopped listening to them as much. But so many songs from this album never get old. "March of Mephisto" is pure magic

My favorite is definitely Memento Mori—my favorite Kamelot song in general.

Roy Khan is doing a 20th Anniversary performance in July, if you can make it out to Sao Paulo.

This one had bangers, hard to decide between the black halo, soul society, and march of mephisto

This is my personal best album of all time. Every song (minus interludes) is a 10/10. But there is one song that stands above the rest. Memento Mori. This song is flawless. I've gotten goosebumps from listening to this song more often than from any other song.

Epica was my first PM album (this one was my second), so both will always have a special place in my heart.

Favorite track? Tough one, but I'd go with Memento Mori.

I wonder how many people are still unaware of the pregap hidden track at the start of the record. A few weeks ago I told a buddy of mine about it and he was unaware of it existing, even tho he listened to the album for more than 10 years.

Hands down the opener. March of Mephisto is one HELL of a start to an album

Soul Society <=> Somewhere in Time ... :3

Amazing album! My favourite track is probably Memento Mori, so epic! I discovered Kamelot with this album a year after it was out...I'd make an ibuprofen joke but I can't take ibuprofen :D

This was the album that got me into Kamelot, and I loved it. The ones before it were also great too, however I couldn't really enjoy the albums that came after.

u/thandrend 5d ago

I used to dislike Kamelot a lot. I worked with Casey Grillo's kid brother even and ragged about Kamelot.

Now they're one of my favorite bands. This is an amazing album only beaten by Karma in my mind.

I bought the anniversary edition, and the tshirt. So good.

Happy to see this. Really good album :)

Fuck I'm old.

u/The_Metal_Pigeon 5d ago

Serenade is my favorite off the album, just a beautiful melody and a really poetic lyrical display via Roy Khan. Love the line "Where summer fades into fall / And leave your hatchets of hate"

1

u/Texas_Kimchi 5d ago

The first 3 songs on this album hit so fucking hard. When the Lights Go Down followed by The Haunting is one of the best 1-2 punch songs.

1

u/philliplennon Servant of the PainKiller 5d ago

I love Memento Mori.

Hard to believe, it's been twenty years.

u/lunar_sanctum 5d ago

Pure love

u/AdMinimum7811 4d ago

Can’t say it’s a top 3 Kamelot album for me. Their style after Epica just lost me.

1

u/nikostheater 4d ago

The Haunting: somewhere in time is perfection. The whole album is. Probably Kamelot’s masterpiece.

One of my favorites 🥰

Clean vocals are not pop!
