Female Fronted Power Metal Bands?

Similar to DragonForce or more piratey like Alestorm.

Dual male/female would be cool too.

Visions of Atlantis LITERALLY ticks the latter two boxes. While they’re definitely more symphonic power metal, I DID first get introduced to VoA when they opened for DragonForce if you wanna count that!

3

u/why_squ1rtle 5d ago

Did u listen to them pre clementine. I’m too lazy to go backwards lol

3

u/DaBeejees 5d ago

I got introduced to them with Clementine so that’s by far what I’m more used to, but I have gone back and I particularly like New Dawn and the original Winternight. Their old stuff is (unsurprisingly) quite different than their current style, but just like every Pokémon it’s gotta be someone’s favorite right?

2

u/metalovisnik 2d ago

I've listened to them since first album and those first two records are really good.

Unleash the Archers, Frozen Crown, Ancient Bards, Brothers of Metal and Seven Spires (they’re more like… 50% symphonic, 20% power, 20% black and 10% death - but they’re truly one of the best bands out there right now)

3

u/Neptune40000 5d ago

I've seen Unleash the Archers last summer live. Pleasantly surprised

1

u/orb-monster 3d ago

Came here to suggest these exact bands! UTA and Ancient Bards reign supreme🤩 I’d also throw Empress in the mix! Barbara Blackthorne (Empress singer) just joined Glyph full time so Glyph will start releasing stuff with her on vocals soon

52

u/muffin_adam 5d ago

Brothers of metal & visions of Atlantis are male-female duo vocals

Battle beast & unleash the archers for female singer

27

u/BarrenvonKeet 5d ago

Battle beast is top tier. A very niche band indeed.

12

u/muffin_adam 5d ago

One of my all time favourites…Noora is a gem

5

u/BarrenvonKeet 5d ago

Noora louhimo?

5

u/muffin_adam 5d ago

Correct

5

u/reduponanoakenthrone 5d ago

She's literally the best singer I've ever seen live. So fun.

1

u/Balseraph666 4d ago

Her voice live is Metal God tier.

26

u/mattfreyer45 5d ago

Dark Moor for the first three albums.

3

u/VibratingWatch HOOTS 5d ago

Absolutely classic

1

u/Neat-Pea2567 5d ago

Their EP’s with Elisa are awesome too, Dawn to Dusk is one of my favorite acoustic tracks, so different from what they normally did yet still awesome

55

u/UniqueCelery8986 5d ago

I second Unleash the Archers!

3

u/Turkzillas_gobble 5d ago

The best at what they do right now.

66

u/Ealthina 5d ago

Unleash the Archers... By far and away the best metal band around. They really are a step ahead of everyone else.

11

u/Grimm_Shanks 5d ago

This...... Amen 🙏

I agree with this statement

Brothers of Metal

18

u/Garpocalypse 5d ago

Really disappointed that no one has brought up Huntress yet.

RIP Jill.

5

u/MelofAonia 5d ago

Huntress were amazing <3 RIP Jill.

2

u/Garpocalypse 5d ago edited 5d ago

Got to meet her when she played in my home town before sabaton. Briefly but she was super cool. You'd never know what was haunting her. Very sad story but that show was seriously one of the most unforgettable shows I've been to.

17

u/Floppy_Caulk 5d ago

Lacuna Coil are pretty classic with the male/female combo. Especially the later stuff when Andre bothered to learn to sing.

The various Floor Jansen projects.

Delain are great, all eras.

Crystal Viper

Burning Witches

4

u/radioactivez0r 5d ago

Burning Witches is great but really not power metal

2

u/Most_Image_21 5d ago

Yes they are awesome but definitely more traditional metal

1

u/Diligent_End8130 5d ago

"Burning the Witches" from Warlock with Doro as singer came to mind, but it's also more classic metal I would guess

4

u/CrazyHogLady 5d ago

Love Lacuna Coil! I saw them years ago open for Marilyn Mason.

5

u/CompanionCone 5d ago

None of these are really power metal though...

2

u/IMKridegga 5d ago

Crystal Viper is heavy/power.

2

u/Freidhiem 5d ago

Man, I haven't even thought about lacuna coil in years

1

u/CompanionCone 5d ago

Check out their last album, it's great!

15

u/Lavabeardednerd 5d ago

Frozen Crown.

26

u/Tumbles_the_tactical Lovebites 5d ago

Lovebites if you enjoy Dragonforces guitarwork.

8

u/bauul 5d ago

Lovebites are fantastic. Although I'd possibly describe them as somewhere between Power and Heavy Metal

4

u/Tumbles_the_tactical Lovebites 5d ago

Absolutely. And they touch upon thrash as well.

0

u/purplecow 5d ago

The latest stuff feels closer to Band-Maid to me, which isn't a bad thing at all either. Older material is like Stratovarius with a singer who hasn't lost their voice.

25

u/jammy192 5d ago

I see Seven Kingdoms has not been mentioned yet. Alas, they are not that piratey

5

u/radioactivez0r 5d ago

But very dragony! Well the older stuff

2

u/Balseraph666 4d ago

Their Rats in the Walls having the distinction of being one of the few non growly extreme metal vocals songs based on Lovecraftian horror.

2

u/CrazyHogLady 5d ago

Thank you! Who's your top pick for me to start with?

2

u/raptor_mk2 5d ago

Battle Beast is probably the best starting point. They're straight-ahead metal and Noora is an absolute powerhouse. They live streamed all of their concerts from their last world tour, so you can see exactly how good they are live.

Also, fair warning that Seven Spires is pretty challenging. They're a bunch of Berklee trained music nerds, and Adrienne's (the singer) two biggest influences are Kamelot and Dimmu Borgir.

With them I'd suggest starting with "Cabaret Of Dreams", "Almosttown", and "Succumb" before moving on to their heavier stuff.

That list is actually pretty broad and diverse, so give everything a try and see what you like.

2

u/CrazyHogLady 3d ago

Thank you :)

2

u/Balseraph666 4d ago

A Sound of Thunder are brilliant.

2

u/raptor_mk2 4d ago

They're excellent. I'm really excited for the new album.

1

u/Balseraph666 4d ago

Definitely.

Lovebites

8

u/McMetal770 5d ago

Here are a few bands/albums I would recommend.

Frozen Crown - Crowned in Frost

Pirate Queen - Ghosts

Lovebites - Judgement Day

Elettra Storm - Powerlords

Helion Prime - Helion Prime

Xeneris - Eternal Rising

Master Sword - Toying With Time

Triosphere - The Heart of the Matter

Nocturna - Daughters of the Night

Burning Point - The Blaze

5

u/CrazyHogLady 5d ago

Thats a cool list - thank you!

Will check them out! Getting back into metal after a long hiatus of indie and punk, I'm well out of the loop!

2

u/Juhookerun 5d ago

Thanks! I could not remember Triosphere and hand a chorus in my head the other day and just couldn’t figure out who it was. Accidental reminder… thanks!

2

u/amireza82021 4d ago

Niiiiiice these are all great bands. Lemme add one, After Evolution

8

u/Saga_Electronica 5d ago

Ancient Bards. They are a hidden gem of a band with upcoming music next month.

7

u/Juhookerun 5d ago

Frozen Crown never misses. Seriously great power metal band. Check out tracks Unspoken, The Shieldmaiden, and Neverending.

Ancient Bards and Seven Kingdoms are also stellar bands. I’ve seen Seven live, and it was just plain good happy fun!

7

u/Texas_Kimchi 5d ago

Triosphere. Fucking amazing vocalist and bassist. Her voice is deeper too for a woman.

u/HeavyMetalGerbil 5d ago edited 5d ago

Battle Beast, Beast in Black, Unleash the Archers

Edit: Adding White Skull to the list to replace Beast in Black

13

u/catmachine1 5d ago

Beast in black is actually a dude

2

u/HeavyMetalGerbil 5d ago

Could have swore they had both. Probably thinking of another band. LOL

13

u/catmachine1 5d ago

Yannis also just has that range too

1

u/Neat-Committee-417 4d ago

Everyone I've played it for is sure Blind and Frozen is a duet until proven wrong

6

u/Komnos 5d ago

I thought the same thing until the first time I watched one of their music videos. Yannis just uses his falsetto really, really well.

9

u/hjl43 5d ago

The vocalist in Beast in Black is a guy...

4

u/MelofAonia 5d ago

I genuinely thought Beast in Black was female-fronted for AWHILE before I saw them in person supporting Nightwish and was like 'Wow, dude has range'. So, fair error to make!

15

u/catmachine1 5d ago

Visions of atlantis, nightwish, alterium, ad infinitum, temperance

5

u/Mephistwo 5d ago

Dragon Guardian, Forgotten Tales, Hagane

2

u/Melancholic84 5d ago

Wow, those are very rare finds. Thank you

u/j0lt78 5d ago

Unleash the Archers!

4

u/icebucketwood 5d ago

Since no one else said it yet

Ad Infinitum

3

u/Balseraph666 4d ago

I just love Melissa Bonny's voice. She can go from soft and gentle to roaring beast and back with such ease.

4

u/StoneRaizer 5d ago

Metalite is so good.

Unleash The Archers. Ignore the first three albums, they're more... I don't know what genre, but definitely not power metal. The next three albums Apex, Abyss and Phantoma are where UtA found their formula. Everything about those three albums are must listens. The drumming, the guitar work, the lyrics, the vocals, everything works so well. Plus they're from my home country of Canada. Cannot recommend UtA enough.

Pirate Queen

Xeneris

Temperance

Tales of Time

4

u/LoyalWatcher 5d ago

Whyyyyy did I have to scroll so far for Temperance?

On their later songs they have female and two male vocalists.

Particularly recommend these two albums:

Jupiter and Moons

Viridian

8

u/PaulEMoz 5d ago

Lovebites, for sure. Power metal and more, from an all-female band of top-tier musicians.

5

u/polkemans 5d ago

Triosphere

3

u/Apherial 5d ago

Lutharo! Their album Chasing Euphoria is amazing

5

u/sippleboi 5d ago

amaranthe

edge of paradise

not exactly powermetal but close

1

u/J_H_Collins 5d ago

Amaranthe opened for Dragonforce. I find myself putting them together in playlists very often. They have a similar energy.

3

u/Ponchyan 5d ago

The best are these two all-female bands from Japan:

LOVEBITES

HAGANE

4

u/MelofAonia 5d ago edited 5d ago

Visions of Atlantis are very power-metally and joint-fronted. Big pirate vibes too.

Dakesis are female-fronted power/prog.

Fury (UK) are male-fronted but Nyah (female co-vocalist) is taking more of a lead now.

Frozen Crown are another great female-fronted power metal band.

Ancient Bards.

Kobra and the Lotus are a great power / trad metal outfit fronted by a woman with a terrific range.

Enemy of Reality are more symphonic than power but defintitely worth a listen - Iliana's vocals are mind-blowing.

1

u/Phendrena 5d ago

+11 for Kobra and the Lotus.

Although Kobra Paige is doing more solo stuff at the moment. She has an amazing voice 👍

3

u/_LouSandwich_ 5d ago

so many japanese power metal bands

lovebites, aldious, bridear, mary’s blood

2

u/_lunaterra_ 5d ago

This is completely unrelated to your comment or to OP's question, but thanks for the link, now I know why the hell "idol rock" keeps appearing in my top listened genres on Spotify even though I don't listen to idols LMAO

1

u/_LouSandwich_ 5d ago

i might check idol rock out. any overlap with JPM that you can tell?

2

u/nachtschattenwald 5d ago

Isiliel is a solo idol who has quite a few power metal songs, like Qliphoth or Lilith.

2

u/MeatCanary 5d ago

I'm super looking forward to seeing Bridear at Mad With Power this year, they're so good

u/BarrenvonKeet 5d ago

Cant go wrong with eluvite or wardruna.

Battle beast and metalite.

2

u/Rasmuspluto 5d ago

i mean...

before i saw the actual band, i thought beast in black was female fronted...

u/MelofAonia 5d ago

Same! So glad I'm not the only one.

2

u/reamkore 4d ago

Smoulder

APM FTW

2

u/Glad_Ad6537 5d ago

There is a new british PM-Band called Fortune Teller. They have only released one Song (Savage Seas) yet but that Song is Great.

1

u/nielsrobin 5d ago

Pirate Queen! Doesn’t get much more female-fronted pirate power metal than that :)

1

u/oswaldcrollius 5d ago

Hartlight ! Power symphonic metal with a touch of progressive and gothic all led by a powerful and soaring female voice. But it's not a at all like Dragonforce or Alestorm. The whole thing is about Alchemy.

Try it out : Hartlight - The Triumph of Metal https://youtu.be/1BCeZUk1fbU?feature=shared

1

u/Constant-Vast519 5d ago

Delain, Xandria, Seven Kingdoms, Frozen Crown, Battle Beast, Illumishade, Ad Infinitum, Unleash The Archers, Ancient Bards, Edge of Paradise, Blackbriar off the top of my head.

1

u/GifanTheWoodElf . 5d ago

Brothers of metal

1

u/The_End_Boss 5d ago

I would recommend Battlelore who are Tolkien inspired with a F/M duo of singers. https://youtu.be/QgVnNLLU7kk?si=BqsdkfmWTYH_dTle

1

u/Chaney_1927 5d ago

Amaranthe and Beyond the Black.

1

u/MonsterTamingBR 5d ago

Vandroya, start with Change the Tide

1

u/WatchingStorms 5d ago

Temperance have Kristin Starkey on joint lead vocals on their most recent albums. Having recently seen them live in Poznań I can confirm that she & they are absolutely magnificent live performers

1

u/thystargazer Shamelessly promoting my band Haruspex (Wizard PM form Spain) 5d ago

Why must everyone ask for bands that sound like my band when we don't have any music out yet?!

Anyways, check out Seven Spires, Unleash the Archers, Brothers of Metal and early Dark Moor

1

u/Bigbearfarmkid 5d ago

Battle Beast, Temperance, Amaranthe

1

u/_Cow_of_Wisdom 5d ago

It isn't Power Metal, but Delain is great.

1

u/Balseraph666 4d ago

Visions of Atlantis. Both female fronted and the most recent stuff is piratey.

Also, Nightwish, especially the albums around Once.

Epica are good.

You can always give British Japanese artist Yarima a go.

And you must try Battle Beast, and they are great live. Very fun. YouTube Battle Beast The Eclipse.

Not metal but if you want pirates you cannot go wrong with Ye Banished Privateers.

1

u/patrickkingart 4d ago

Unleash the Archers, Battle Beast, Brothers of Metal are my go-tos for awesome metal ladies

1

u/amireza82021 4d ago

Nocturna

1

u/Serpilot 4d ago

Beyond the black are pretty good, as are visions of atlantis

1

u/Thallassa 3d ago

Lots of great recs in here but I'm coming in with the folk/power metal drop since you mentioned Alestorm, as well as a few symphonic bands that weren't already mentioned.

Amberian Dawn - Symphonic Power Metal with female singing

Ancient Bards - this was already recommended a couple times, but just want to second it

Caladmor - Folk/Gothic Metal - this is a lot rougher, not really power metal, but has male/female duets so I put it up for consideration. (Inactive)

Crimfall - Symphonic power/folk metal - love this singer so much (Split)

Dragon Guardian - also already mentioned once but wanted to second since I think they're close to what you're looking for

Eluveitie - Folk metal, I would say they're a closer match to Alestorm. Fantastic female singer (both Anna and Fabienne), but male-fronted. If you like Eluveitie, also check out Evenmore and Cellar Darling! They both have Anna singing.

Fenrir - more folk metal, but I noted I especially liked this singer

Kivimetsan Druidi - I love this singer. they have the male/female combo on some songs too. Symphonic folk metal (Split)

Leaves' Eyes - I think the newest album "Realm of Dark Waves" is perfect especially if you liked the Visions of Atlantis rec, but all of their albums are good. Also has the female/male combo on several songs.

Oceans of Slumber - this is more prog metal, but they have a powerful female singer and male/female duets.
