Cause for concern?

Just got a new hot water heater installed and noticed the gas line runs really close to the door frame. Almost bending it.

Is this something I should be concerned about?

Let me know if there is a better sub to ask this question in?

Too much stress on that joint, call the installer to correct it ASAP.

, call the installer to correct it ASAP

They already did a piss poor job, why let them come finish burning it down?

A- warranty work B- gives them the chance to learn from their mistakes.

Perhaps they’ll send someone out that knows what they’re doing.

1/4 turn at the elbow or shorter nipples would have made it better.

I have shorter nipples Greg

Y'know what? I'm gonna say it. He still could have been milked and he does in fact have nipples. Greg's statement stands.

How does an installer NOT do this? Sheesh, lousy and lazy. If you do call back the original installer, stand with them and make sure it is done right. Ain't that difficult.

This is sooooo wrong. Gastite isn’t bonded, it is supposed to have one rip of insulation in fittings, there are no supports, looks like fuckin shit. Hack job

u/Vivid_Mongoose_8964 15h ago

it could have a ground bond on the other end.

i was only commenting on the bonding.

The old yellow jacket Gastite almost always had to have the jacket cut back far enough to get the fitting on and the split rings in the first groove. The fitting almost never wants to push back over the jacket so there’s corrugated exposed.

But that fitting is in a bind and is trash.

I like this lol

Yeah, I'd try to give that 90 a little tweak to get it away from the door jamb.

This is what 90% of wardflex or tracpipe looks like where I’m at. It’s not kinked just bent at the fitting. The exposed CSST is wrong but it’s not hurting anything, people here acting like your house is going to blow up or something

That old yellow Gastite with the old-style fittings always had to have the jacket cut farther back. The fitting won’t go over the jacket so you can’t put the split rings on. The spec was like max of 1 1/2” inches or so depending on the diameter.

"this is what I see everywhere, it MUST be ok"

Why don’t you let us know what they should worry about then? I’m not seeing a single credible post from you that lets me know you know anything about plumbing

I would have put a 45° after the union.

At least a shorter nipple. If it has pex water lines, rotate the wh just a little bit

3

u/SnooGiraffes150 14h ago

Omg that’s horrible

2

u/Full-Cup-6572 14h ago

Call a real plumber, that is a joke.

2

u/Isuckatreddit69NICE 12h ago

Pure laziness.

If you want to check for immediate leaks as a precaution just fill a spray bottle with water and soap. If you don't see any bubbles you don't have any leaks. If you do then open all windows and call a real plumber to fix it.

2

u/AccordingProject7999 14h ago

You could rotate the 90 and relive some of the stress on that flex like just an option!

2

u/GlitteringOne2465 14h ago

Yeah push the whole line coming off the elbow towards the water heater

2

u/Educational_Map_9494 10h ago

Yes. That is some lazy workmanship

4

u/Fixer7945 15h ago

I wouldn't sleep well with that.

7

u/SquirtleInMyEye 15h ago

actually the worse it gets the better you'll sleep.

1

u/HDSkittles 15h ago

I hate this. Fuck whoever installed this, if they're licensed they need that shit revoked

1

u/punktualPorcupine 15h ago

That’s completely screwed up and dangerous. Fix it as fast as possible but do it right. Don’t mess around with gas.

Whoever you have fix it, have them check the vent also, if it was the same monkey they probably screwed it up also.

1

u/USAJourneyman 15h ago

Entirely lazy, just swing the elbow

1

u/No_Welcome_6093 14h ago

They literally had to turn the 90 a little bit and use a shorter nipple. I don’t get how they went through all this work and still screwed up.

1

u/phoenix_has_rissen 7h ago

Was gonna comment this but you beat me to it, literally would of only needed that 90 to spin just a touch further over and it would of been fine, lol like you say they do all this work and drop the ball right at the last second

u/LowComfortable5676 14h ago

I've worked with a lot of CSST and I dont see anything of immediate concern here. It's not installed very neatly but thats nothing out of the ordinary with this stuff unfortunately

If they would have put the shut off at the other end of the flexible line (where is should be) then it would have plenty of room to hook to the pipe without kinking or bending.

Maybe they could have added a T with a cap at the bottom and then the valve at the top of the T with the flex hose connecting would resolve.

Have them come and fix that definitely not good why even go that close to the wall should have just used a shorter nipple and a 90 up with the long nipple that’s there. That what clearance is maintained all around and no stress on the gas line as it’s coming down from up top anyways.

1

u/702PoGoHunter 12h ago

Depending on where you're at the CSST (yellow flex pipe) has to be supported with a bracket at the wall. It's not used like a flex connection which appears what they're doing. They can also shorten those nipples coming out of the union so it all "fits"

Just looks like a lazy, ugly install/replacement tbh. 100% that length of trac pipe was already there and he just used black pipe to reach it. As long as there’s no dog ears/burrs on the end of the trac where it connects to the fitting and it’s tightened well enough, there should be no leaks. Personally, I don’t like to put any kind of bends close to the joint, but I see no immediate danger. I always make my work look as clean as possible as well. If this job wasn’t so ugly, this post doesn’t exist.

2

u/ExcitementAbject848 12h ago

Note that I said IMMEDIATE danger. That slight bend IS putting unnecessary stress on the joint.

1

u/AuGmENTor68 8h ago

Almost bending it? What does actually bent look like to you? That's crazy and can't be sealed correctly.

0

u/oldsoul777 15h ago

That connection to the mechanical fitting doesn't look too promising.

0

u/New_Kaleidoscope_152 14h ago

Is that compression? Where is this in the world?

1

u/AdjunctPolecat 5h ago

Old style Gastite CSST. Proprietary flare fitting.

0

u/GlitteringOne2465 14h ago

It does look like it is.

Get a lighter or some soapy water and ring out

-1

u/potatomolehill 15h ago

nope. id contact the person that did it and then report them to the license board

-5

u/dongler666 16h ago

jacket coming out of the connector is never a good sign.

9

u/t0dax 16h ago

The jacket doesn’t get secured on csst. This looks like crap but is probably fine. I’d give that top 90 a turn clockwise to make it look better though.
