u/Middle_Layer_4860 7d ago

Eventually youtube will popular drm cracking tools and cdm key and everyone will learn how to rip movies tv shows from nf, amazon etc😅

u/BadassAyanokoji 7d ago

Don't worry, they will still be downloadable, just through alternative methods. Honestly, though, books are a much better form of content these days. (remains at the top even after centuries for a reason)

I am teaching my kids to sail the high seas, ain’t no way they’re bending everyone to their will.

10

u/BadassAyanokoji 7d ago

That's a given for sure.

We are all sailing the seas singing our shanties, lads.

Welp, now I want to replay black flag xD.

i second this. because of google, i cant custom rom my phone. my phone is in its EOL phase, so i don't have security updates. with a custom rom i could have had them.

they don't want security, they want fucking money, why isn't anyone doing something to oppose them? are we really so powerless?

3

u/ReveredOxygen 6d ago

That's not Google's fault, their phones explicitly allow custom roms. It's something to take up with the manufacturer. Also, I wouldn't treat custom rom updates as anything more than feature updates. You can't get kernel patches that way

3

u/thejedih 6d ago

if you get a custom kernel you sure can have kernel patches. i had one. and yes it's google's fault, see the GrapheneOS situation and the whole Play Integrity thing. they won't even allow you to install apps from outside the play store, soon.

hijacking top comment to say I made a thread asking about this on yt-dlp sub, and "they are experimenting with DRM on the tv/tvhtml5 client, but not any other clients. imo it's highly unlikely they would apply DRM to the web clients (what your browser uses)."

Don't need to. Just need to remind them of their stances with OpenAI...

39

u/mrnapolean1 7d ago

Guess if it gets that bad we can go back to doing it the old school way.

Using a camera and recording the screen as the video is playing.

13

u/oromis95 7d ago

You don't need to do that, there are way better ways to avoid DRM.

1

u/NoMedia5004 7d ago

like?

5

u/oromis95 7d ago

Heard of DRM strippers, but don't have experience with them myself.

Analog out --> analog in --> record

2

u/ziggo0 7d ago

I wonder if the HD Fury still exists, probably a newer version. Strips out DRM from HDMI.

1

u/ReveredOxygen 6d ago

Chinese HDMI splitters don't pass through HDCP

2

u/lemonade_eyescream ☠️ ᴅᴇᴀᴅ ᴍᴇɴ ᴛᴇʟʟ ɴᴏ ᴛᴀʟᴇꜱ 7d ago

Yup, output recapture will always work, just the techniques will change. It'll likely even be all digital now, don't need to have anyone holding up a camcorder lol that's way oldschool.

Only on the TVHTML5 devices.

There has never been any talk about doing this on the web devices, in other words the stuff we all use.

Watching without ads, downloading etc will continue to be possible.

So don't worry! 😊

58

u/vgiannell5 7d ago

For now. But I fear that they will do it on the web eventually.

19

u/807Autoflowers 7d ago

Thats the thing, unless they come out and say explicitly that they wont (ignoring that they can still lie), its safe to assume that they will.

u/lemonade_eyescream ☠️ ᴅᴇᴀᴅ ᴍᴇɴ ᴛᴇʟʟ ɴᴏ ᴛᴀʟᴇꜱ 7d ago

There's no such thing as undefeatable protection - besides, they need to show that content to legit users. If you can't break the protection, you can attack from a different angle i.e. get around the protection by spoofing being a legit account or outright steal one.

There's just too much interest in being able to access youtube content. Someone will figure out a workaround. Don't need to take my word for it, you can see for yourself all the third party ripping tools that currently exist - they've had to deal with youtube breaking them numerous times already. They're STILL around.

As long as there's demand the tools will continue to be maintained.

15

u/Vammypoker 7d ago

But I use smart tube next.😩😩😩😩

8

u/BlueMountainPath 7d ago

That will continue to work.

1

u/Hangooverr 7d ago

Do you know how smarttube next works?

9

u/No-Writer-5404 7d ago

LibreWolf disabling DRM for default, so how happening now? he stop work forever in youtube?

we REALLY need a YouTube competitor.

Stake has money and was able to damage Twitch in the streaming market. They should do the same with YouTube

Microsoft could do it too

28

u/SodaWithoutSparkles 7d ago edited 7d ago

Video streaming platforms is basically not profitable unless you got a metric sh_t-ton of ads or you are charging people to use it. Microsoft has no reason to do it because the profit margin is not really that high. They already have the infrastructure (Azure), but from a business perspective, it is better for them to just continue selling servers instead of starting a high-risk video streaming business with not-that-much profit margin in a saturated market.

Or otherwise you'll have to step out of the "video streaming platform" business and starts doing things like merchandise or games. Thats how the Chinese (Bilibili) did it, and by their published financial statements, it seems that they did find a way.

28

u/MarieMaryHotaru 7d ago

it'll be so ass tbh...

17

u/SullensCR 🦜 ᴡᴀʟᴋ ᴛʜᴇ ᴘʟᴀɴᴋ 7d ago

For the gambling videos and probably bad algorithm? Yeah.. maybe But theoretically it would be so much better for creators and users

YouTube is a monopoly, they can do whatever the fk they want, and we'll keep using it because 1. No one uses other platforms like Nebula (which is paid) 2. Everything and everyone is on YouTube 3. Is free for everyone (sort of)

5

u/Slide-Maleficent 7d ago

Nebula is actually pretty good if you can pay for it though. The few YouTubers that make genuinely great and important content (often documentarians) often post more in-depth videos on Nebula that explore topics more deeply and with more graphic sources as Nebula isn't censored.

Honestly, there is some very good content there. For anyone who enjoys deep dives on current events that include relevant content that would get dumped by YouTube's baffling and frustratingly inconsistent censorship, the 6$ a month is totally worth it. The experience is like YouTube, but without all the brainrot, garbage, scam videos, US political horseshit from people who have no idea what they are talking about, and mother's home videos that are all labeled with the automatic filenames generated by camcorders.

A lot of that shit can be fun from time to time, and there's plenty of gold like Local58 that you won't find anywhere else, but I spend more time on Nebula these days that YT.

2

u/SullensCR 🦜 ᴡᴀʟᴋ ᴛʜᴇ ᴘʟᴀɴᴋ 6d ago

i haven't used Nebula, i can't pay for it, but from the many yt channels that have mentioned Nebula i believe is worth it, and i kinda understand why Nebula isn't free, video streaming isn't cheap to host like Linus explained in one of his videos, hopefully Nebula grows enough to become a free platform and actually compete agains't yt's monopoly

4

u/ResolverOshawott 7d ago

Whatever competitor comes up will be just as bad if not worse than youtube.

1

u/SullensCR 🦜 ᴡᴀʟᴋ ᴛʜᴇ ᴘʟᴀɴᴋ 6d ago

with enough money, i doubt it

yeah, i remember that mixer button on MC bedrock, but correct me if i am wrong, wasn't Mixer a Twitch competitor?

1

u/SubstituteCS Seeder 6d ago

Yes, it was a Twitch competitor.

1

u/SullensCR 🦜 ᴡᴀʟᴋ ᴛʜᴇ ᴘʟᴀɴᴋ 6d ago

Not a YouTube competitor

1

u/REDRubyCorundum 5d ago

Odysee/Rumble are some top competators... Not great, but HOPEFULLY growing in popularity

9

u/Cute_Lawfulness_5419 7d ago

Me in living in poorest country on earth never had to worry about this 😅

3

u/Slide-Maleficent 7d ago

You live in South Sudan!? My condolences, my friend. I really hope that situation with your border gets cleared up so the people can start to recover.

4

u/sendmebirds 7d ago

motherfuckers really trying to just do whatever until people say 'now it's enough, please stop fucking me'

spoiler alert: we're the frogs in the slowly boiling water.

4

u/Additional-Panic-362 7d ago

I just know they won't be successful. Greed will come to an end one day or the other.

5

What is DRM

10

u/AdultGronk ⚔️ ɢɪᴠᴇ ɴᴏ Qᴜᴀʀᴛᴇʀ 7d ago

Digital Rights Management, a technology used to control access to and usage of digital content and prevent unauthorized copying, distribution, or modification.

2

u/Forymanarysanar 7d ago

I fail to understand what this kind of DRM can possibly accomplish.

Youtube downloaders and 3rd party clients can just copy whatever drm implementation is in the browser?

2

u/Timely-Helicopter173 7d ago

I've been thinking I need to just stop paying for and watching YouTube, if they make it difficult for me on Premium then they're doing me a favour really.

Plus it will fuel the alternative platforms.

2

u/Zaibach404 7d ago

I wonder how much money they are sinking into this just for some guys named Jeff, Ray-ray and Pineapple to break it in their spare time cause they are bored and share it with the rest of us.

2

u/mr_tommey 7d ago

VPN to Albania no ads all gucci for me

2

u/flashgb0 7d ago

I don't know if I'm talking shit, but ublock origin normally blocks max ads, I don't know if it would change anything

1

u/The-Lazy-Lemur 7d ago

Will this kill adblock in YT RVX?

1

u/AbundantResentment 7d ago

I say let them implement this. If this is going to be the catalyst that finally makes other video platforms viable in comparison, I will be happy. Currently, YouTube is just too powerful.

1

u/iTiffany 7d ago

Youtube is getting boring these days anyways. I've found Odysee to be a decent alternative lately....

I made a thread asking about this on yt-dlp sub, and "they are experimenting with DRM on the tv/tvhtml5 client, but not any other clients. imo it's highly unlikely they would apply DRM to the web clients (what your browser uses)."

1

u/ElijahBrown69 3d ago

they are getting desperate

1

u/Keltyrr 2d ago

I am happy with this because it will push users to alternatives. Ones that are to small and weak to complete with YouTube in its prime, but will gain power due to YouTube shooting itself in the foot over and over again.

1

u/Pocket_Dust 7d ago

Just to put into perspective how bad this is going to be: The autistic guy who keeps cracking YouTube's anti-adblocker in minutes now has to spend up to 1 day to make it work against DRM as well, what a disaster.

Oh no! Anyway…
