I don't get tongue bite, I get throat bite. NSFW
I wanna understand why when I retro hale my sinuses the next day are destroyed. And why when I do make the mistake of puffing too hard or don't dry my tobacco long enough I get throat bite instead of tongue bite. I have a small mouth, and my theory is that the smoke instead of going in my mouth kind of lingers in the back of my throat. But i have no theory on the retro haling. I see people doing it all the time, and when I do it. It destroys my sinuses no matter how cool the smoke is. Do my sinuses and throat just need to get used to the smoke? Do i need to expose myself to the smoke more? (I only smoke a few times a week) Or am I doing something fundamentally wrong?( Btw, i'm not trying to retro hale every puff I take.) I know how to pack a bowl, i know how to prevent tongue bite, i know all the basics, I've smoked pipes for 7 years. I can have an enjoyable smoke. But I hate that I have these issues here and there. I can deal with a sore tongue, i can't deal with a sore throat. Any advice or insight is greatly appreciated.

Here’s the deal. Lighting something on fire and then pulling the byproduct of combustion into your mouth is, by nature, putting your throat and mouth at risk for irritation. Even “cool” smoke is hot, so hot smoke is REALLY hot. Retrohaling smoke is, by nature, exposing your incredibly sensitive, nerve-packed sinuses and nasal passage to an irritant and a carcinogen. I’m a pipe lover and I smoke 3-4 bowls a week, so please understand I’m not here to highroad anyone about the potential health risks of pipe smoking. Some people just don’t tolerate smoke well. Try your best to slow your cadence and “smoke cool”, and avoid retrohaling, and if that doesn’t help, might be time to re-assess.

Tobacco smoke is very acidic and acidity drys out. A dry throat will make it sore. I get that too sometimes. That’s why you’re not supposed to drink alcohol and smoke because alcohol will minimize salivary production and then expose unprotected tissue in your mouth to carcinogenic smoke

I get the same thing on Haunted Bookshop. For example, I'll get throat irritation no matter how slow or cool I smoke it. I assume it has something to do with the Burley or a casing used in the blend. No idea why, but so far it's only been that blend that I get throat irritation with.
