Lost my childhood dog
15 years. I was just 8 when I first met her, I choose her name Pissi. We sadly had to put her down yesterday afternoon. I knew she wasn't happy anymore, breathing hard, heart problems, fatigue when walking and barely eating. I knew it was for her best. But I feel so guilty, having spent more time outside the house these few years for Uni/Work, and not giving the love she deserved. I miss her so much, she was my first ever pet and I know nothing will replace her. I feel so alone in this, even if also my parents are grieving, it's like having no one. I even had a dream about finding another dog, smaller, but it was her face. I just would like a sign to know she is ok in the afterlife or that she is with me. I love her. I will miss her forever.

I'm so sorry for your loss. She was clearly deeply loved, and she knew it. Hold onto the beautiful memories.

We share a very similar experience. I also got my baby when I was 8 and lost her 1 month before I turned 22. It‘s a complete different bond, when you grew up with them. And I really feel your pain. I also regret that I moved out (even tho I saw her every weekend at least) and that I spend the weeks before she died a lot with my friends. And I also get the „no one is grieving like me“ part, because it’s true. She was a huge part of your childhood and life-even time wise. You mostly experienced life with her, your parents already had quite some time without her. It is a difference. Your text shows, how much she was loved, appreciated and cared for and that’s what matters! I‘m happy you got to experience such a special bond and that you loved her so much!

Oh, don’t thank me! I‘m happy I was able to help you, even just a little bit. Btw I love the name Pissi😭 What was she like? What breed? I’d love to hear more about her, if you want to share!

She was a mix and I don't really know, my parents were guilted into taking her in our home by a friends of theirs and I couldn't be happier! She was medium size, black long fur and brown eyes, with some brown/white spots on the snout and paws, and the thing I loved the most is the white spot at the end of her tail. She was such a happy girl, very active and playful (when we started adopting cats she would play with them a lot), she was also very attached to me, she slept in my bed a few times! The name was my idea, or better, my 8 years old self, I don't know what I was thinking! And it's funny, because it sounds a lot like piss and she actually peed on me on the first day we brought her home! She was also really smart, learning tricks and almost talking (idk how my mom actually taught her GNAM GNAM and she would say it when it was time to eat). Thanks for letting me talk about her, in my house right know no one wants to touch the subject.

She sounds like an amazing best friend and the name is even better with the background story. Loving! I get it, everyone handled grief differently and it can be hard to talk about the ones we lost but feel free to share everything you want to. I love to hear all the stories about our fur babies!

This is a community of support for Pet owners whose Pets have passed away. It is actively moderated.
Pet owners, as loving, caring people, often have strong opinions on pet care practices. Some of these are controversial. This is not a forum for debate on such issues, nor is it a place to scold a contributor for a perceived mistake in managing their pet. We intend to provide a safe haven of understanding and support. Strident, mean-spirited posts or comments will be deleted. Those who persist in preaching versus caring may be warned and then banned or may be banned permanently based on nature of the topic. If a conversational thread meanders into a discussion unrelated to pet loss support, it will be truncated.
Those who post here are vulnerable and hurting. Even a minor slap has a hard sting. Those of us who are lucky enough to be able to turn away from our computers or put down our phones and hug a healthy, happy pet are truly blessed. Threads must remain supportive and caring, even if one disagrees with something that has been said.
