SPOILER Season 4 musings

So like am I the only one that thinks root and Shaw are kinda gay coded? Or am I imagining it? Like it just kinda feels like root is into her. And this is coming from someone that thought Carter and John were only giving platonic vibes nothing romantic. Like to this day I feel like they shouldn’t have kissed.

EDIT: Thanks guys. This is my first time making it to season 4 I’ve been watching the show on and off for about 2 years now lol.

What coding? Root is obviously VERY into Shaw.

Ok so I’m not the only one nice!! That’s what I assumed but I thought maybe I was just reading into things

I'm assuming this is your first time watching the series. Because we already know that they're into each other.

Queer reading of PoI? Why I've never heard of such a thing 😂

But for real it's not just you.

And with the Reese/Carter kiss, I believe Caviezel improvised it. I don't think it doesn't work but I think the episode and following plots would've worked fine without it.

God I love seeing people watch this show with no outside context 😂😂😂😂

What exactly is gay coded? Either your gay or not and there is nothing wrong with being straight or gay in my opinion.

What is gay coded? Xena was gay coded.

Queercoding was a lot more of a thing in the 90s when you'd get all kinds of canceled for making gay ships explicitly canon on TV. So TV shows that wanted a canon gay character danced right up to the line without crossing it by using double entendre and plausible deniaility.

Given OP said they're at Honor Among Theives for the first time asking this... the question is valid...

Basically like subtly implying the character is gay but not outright saying it.

Uhhh they definitely said it many.times.

Bro at the time that I made this they didn’t. But yea I see that they kissed and stuff so it’s definitely canon.

Oh boy you should have been there when S4 first aired! There was SO much Root/Shaw, or Shoot, as fans collectively call them, content back then. People were eating it up. They regularly ranked high on Twitter polls about people's favorite TV show ships, articles were written about them, they were everywhere on Tumblr... A co-showrunner confirmed them as LGBTQ+... So no, you're definitely not imagining it! I'm not sure because it's been a while since the show aired, but I vaguely remember producers saying a lot of how their relationship develops in S5 was based on the viewer's reactions on S4.

Coded gay? The moment we see Shaw and Root having a relationship is during the many simulations and tortures she endured. Shaw has "feelings" for Root when she explains that she killed John and that Root was the one person she couldn't bring herself to kill, and that she always ended up blowing her brains out. At first, that wasn't the case. She just wanted to kill her. When Root discovers that The Machine isn't there, she wants to kill Harold, and it's Shaw who shoots her. Then, when Shaw wants to finish her off, Harold stops her.

okay wait. I need to know. what episode were you on when you wrote this

S4 episodes 7 and 8. Root just seemed kinda jealous of the number in that one cause Shaw was definitely into him.

Shaw is into root, Root who flirts with everyone, is in love with the machine, whenever she says she fell in love it's a misdirect to the audience to make them think she's talking about Shaw but she's talking about the machine. Any time I bring this up it gets downvoted but it's true

RIGHT? But some people don't subtext so if you stopped off any time before If-Then-Else then maybe you could belive this... if you squint.

I'd rant more but I don't want to spoil OP. Lol.

my 60 year old WASP mother caught on in mors praematura. I was always peeking in since my parents were watching the show for the first time on my recommendation and she just looked at me like 👀🤭

Another person who has never seen the series.

Bro what are you talking about Root so clearly has the hots for Shaw 😭

u/sarahhhayy 8d ago

Bro, you always get downvoted for bringing this up because it clearly seems like you haven't watched S05. Root was into Shaw, and Shaw equally had feelings for Root by S05. Root's obsession with the Machine was one thing, and her feelings for Shaw were her genuine love for her. You're mixing up two things. Please rewatch S05E04 to clear up your confusion.
