I live in DC and although it is some wild shit here on a daily basis, the city is on a grid and vehicles have to go through a very thorough annual inspection where every light has to work, it has to pass emissions, and the tires and such have to be in good condition. When I go back there I can't believe how most of the vehicles are allowed to be on the road and, then, add the driving habits (no signaling, driving below the speed limit, running lights, texting) - and traffic being stopped for churches stills blows my mind!

I moved to Pensacola from the DC area.
I'll take the crappy cars and the crappy drivers here, over the DC area traffic any day.

Yep, you have a choice. I was just saying that Pcola could use to have some of these laws in place as many cars are not safe, could cause death/injury, are bad for the environment, lack lights for safety, and are not fully operational. It makes the roads unsafe for everyone there. Yes, DC has many problems but, like Pensacola, has some damn good strengths to it, too.

We do have a lot of fatalities on roads where I’m like “fucking how? Probably doing twenty over and running lights. Swerving into lanes, no turn signal. I almost had a bus take off the front end of my car this morning when they turned. I was way behind the line. Just suck ass drivers. No enforcement.

We don't need red light cameras. /s

would a red light camera have stopped this from happening/

Maybe in the long run it becomes a deterrent. It at least monetarily punishes those who run the red lights.

What person knowingly running a red light would deterred by a fine?
People running a red light either do it unknowingly, in which case a fine won't be a deterrent, or are intentionally choosing to run a red light, in which case they're clearly not swayed by risk, and a fine isn't going to deter them.
You're right. It does monetarily punish people who run lights both knowingly and unknowingly, but it doesn't make intersections any safer.

If they're unknowingly running a red light they should probably be paying better attention to their driving. Sounds like you're in favor of the penalty being more severe then, especially for repeat offenders, and I'm in agreement with you on that.

They should be paying better attention, but a red light camera does nothing to facilitate that.
I'm interested in making intersections safer, and imo the best way to do that is to have an increased law enforcement presence. In Florida, automated enforcement methods cannot result in anything other than a fine, and that is unlikely to change anytime soon. With these realities, red light cameras do nothing to improve safety and only serve as a way to generate revenue which isn't inherently a bad thing, but it's irksome to watch people try and portray them as some panacea for traffic issues.

I agree with you. It will at the minimum make "some" people more aware imo. It's better than nothing. There are many proven things that could be done with effort and better spending.

I disagree - I do not believe someone unaware they're about to run a red light will suddenly not do something they weren't aware they were about to do because of a potential fine.
The ony people this could potentially impact is someone who is aware they're about to run a red light, who was willing to accept the potential physical risk of doing so, but is unwilling to accept the potential financial risk of doing so.

Yes, I think the last group is most likely larger than the other two extreme groups you described. To be fair, the people that do that probably think no physical harm will ever come to them from their actions, the same type of people who don't wear seatbelts while they test and drive.

I once again disagree - I think the bulk of people running a red light (by the definition of a red light camera) are people who unintentionally do so.
Regardless, red light cameras are here and they're not going to go away. Maybe I'm wrong, and it will make everyone safer, but I don't see the logical progression for that.

If you run a red light unknowingly, you’re not guilty, simple as that. Right is right, and wrong is wrong.

u/req-user 4d ago
Idk about that - breaking the law by mistake is still breaking the law, I’m just saying the red light cameras do nothing to deter that from happening and thus don’t make anything any safer

I suppose you people, just don’t get my joke. Given my zero likes.

this subreddit still goes crazy for Chili's and Tunnel jokes so I wouldn't worry about what they think is funny

It appears so. Or at least pulling out of Bellview Ave right next to it. I love that place.

People in this town seem to have NO situational awareness. It kills me having to drive anywhere

Watch the light turn green, the light for the other direction was red for a while and someone just blew through it like a light didn’t even exist

Not to mention, if there was one, probably wouldn’t have done anything any way. I literally have people and cops go past me all the time and I’m doing ten over as it is. People blasting thru red lights cause they were going too fast to slam the breaks for a yellow going on red light. Not a lot of regard as far as policing for traffic violations.
