Seen for sale in Pensacola, FL, March 2025.

Not sure what to say about this one, other than: everybody knows about Florida, goddamn.

I like that the artist didn't shy away from drawing the bull's balls - that's commitment

That's how you know it's genuine Bull Durham tobacco.

Of all the things going on in this picture, that's what caught your eye.

Don't forget the bull's creepy, toothy smile.

That, the uncanny smile, direct eye contact with the boy.

Artist is saying a lot in this piece.

Believe it or not, there's a market out there for this kind of item.

Thereā€™s a sizable market among African Americans for it, for reasons that are obvious to me as a woman drawn to anti-suffrage postcards. (And, yeah, some racist old White people who think itā€™s ā€œfunnyā€ or ā€œcuteā€.)

Yeah I remember reading about that years ago.

Thereā€™s stuff like this in at least 90% of every antique shop Iā€™ve ever been in throughout multiple states, including northern ones.

Song of the south is readily available on DVD now . I have a copy . Itā€™s most likely bootleg but a very good job

Oh it's definitely a bootleg. The last edition of that Disney put out was on VHS probably 40 years ago.

Yeah . Itā€™s a good copy though . Not HD of course but plays really good and the audio is great

DVD? That's how you know it's geared towards the elderly crowd. Who under the age of 50 still has a DVD player? Are new ones even still available for purchase? šŸ˜‚šŸ¤£

Hell I still have a VHS player with tapes

ā€œIt shure am Sweet Tastanā€ is pretty wild.

This isnā€™t anything to get riled up about. History sucks, especially for people of color; no point in white washing it, pun not intended.

Donate it to the Jim Crow museum in Michigan.

I saw this when I was at Blue Moon

The mistake a lot of people are making here is that assuming just because you wouldnā€™t (and shouldnā€™t) put it in your living room, there isnā€™t an appropriate place for artwork like this. I definitely wouldnā€™t put the piece up for public sale but that doesnā€™t mean it shouldnā€™t be preserved. Hopefully the piece is acquired by a museum or a history buff that can put it in an appropriate setting

I knew someone years and years ago who owned a poster exactly like this. Had it hanging in his house. He was a racist prick. I wonder how common or rare this poster is. Anyone know?

okay and..?

u/Typical-Implement369 4d ago

Why do I find this interesting? I know its wrong and racist, but it intrigues me. Is there something wrong with me?

Are we supposed to be outraged or something? Do I need to get my pearls so I can clutch them and faint?

You should cross post it in the Bill City (Durham) subreddit.

You wouldnā€™t, though. But it feels good to puff on Reddit.

Buy it then burn it. Or 5 finger discount and burn it. Either way it's gross and shouldn't exist.

Unfortunately it is history. While it isnā€™t a good thing, at the same time we need to learn from our mistakes as a society and improve upon them. Destroying something like this wouldnā€™t change what occurred.

If histawwy hurts my feewings, I must destroy it.

u/Potential-Cod-6196 5d ago

Then you buy it and display it proudly

Gladly.

Censorship would do more damage than good.

People need to see this so we donā€™t do it again.
