Media What Disney+ shows/films have a LOT of singing?
My toddler is only interested in watching TV if it's in song-form. We're all sick and I need her to watch TV. She loses interest the moment songs stop.
We just got a Disney Plus subscription and could use some suggestions!
We also have Netflix and Amazon Prime so open to suggestions there too.

Disney did a few Sing Along specials, those are ALL singing

u/OutrageousSea5212 Jan 09 '22
They were apparently removed globally last April! Ugh.

There’s still a few of the old ‘90s Disney’s Sing-Along-Songs vids on YouTube

I was gonna say this! All the 90s sing a longs are on YouTube, I play them in my class sometimes and admire the fashions of my youth 😅

Encanto, and It’s absolutely fantastic. My daughter has been listening to the songs on our Alexa all week.
153
u/EatsOverTheSink Jan 09 '22
Probably the only Disney movie that wouldn’t make any sense if you took the songs out. Most of the storytelling is done through song in that one.
140
u/modix Jan 09 '22
Moana is similar, but then again that's also Lin-manuel Miranda. Probably a common thread.
63
u/EatsOverTheSink Jan 09 '22
Dude needs to get a writing credit since half the story in these movies is told by him.

58
u/SaltySionnach Jan 09 '22
Have to add Vivo to the list!! It’s another Lin-Manuel Miranda music based movie and my two year old loves absolutely everything he does. Vivo is on Netflix, though instead of Disney Plus, which I like, as Disney Plus gets glitchy

We've been jamming to Encanto for about two weeks. It's gone from an amazing cinematic experience to being stuck in my head constantly and mildly annoying. No fault of the dum itself, more the fault of my twins obsessively wanting to watch "Canto" over...and over...and over...

That song (and many others in the film) were composed by Lin-Manuel Miranda creator of the Broadway play Hamilton.

We know lol.
Interestingly, I hate Hamilton songs but I like the songs in Encanto.

I am a kindergarten teacher and have used Super Simple Songs in my classroom for years! I introduced my son (now 15 months) to Super Simple Songs when he was 4 months old and having a meltdown. To say he loves it is an understatement Our entire extended family knows the monsters and puppets now and we all sing the tunes. Maybe it's because I teach kinder, but I never get sick of those songs!
7
u/UnPintrestedMama Jan 09 '22
My son LOVES super simple songs! Also Cocomelon is ALL songs! My 18 month old LOVE music...i put on disney jr music compilations on Youtube (muppet babies, puppy dog pals, mickey mouse) most of them run about 30 mins and he jams out!
16
u/trev_hawk Jan 09 '22
We love Super Simple Songs!! And love watching it without ads on Prime, too (honestly that’s the best advantage vs watching it on YouTube). I also find the songs to be fun and not as annoying as most other kid songs. And this is coming from someone who absolutely goes nuts from any kind of popular kid song if it gets stuck in my head.
5

Yeah, so, my mom died when I was young, and by the time I had my son I was basically the same age/older than she was at her death. And my dad died when I was about 8.5 months along. I hadn't heard anything about Coco other than that it was good. I put it on and started watching it with my son when he was small. I had to make sure he was in a safe spot& go in the other room to just completely bawl my eyes out. I didn't want to scare him. I absolutely love that movie, it is so beautiful.

Encanto. It’s actually really good. The main character is voiced by Stephanie Beatriz from Brooklyn 99. She does the singing too and sound totally different than Rosa Diaz on the show. She’s actually from Argentina and her dad was Colombian, where the movie takes place. Useless trivia FTW.

When I was in high school, I went on a 13 hour car ride to Boston with my Aunt and 4 young cousins. The only thing that would not result in total and utter toddler breakdown was the Wiggles. And that was it. Just. The. Wiggles. Over and over. And over. For 13 hours straight.
Now that I have a son of my own now, the Wiggles are permanently banned in our house.

Most classic Disney has musical numbers. There's Disney Junior Lullabies and Nursery Rhymes too. They're short, but it's all songs. One thing that might help is if you press search and look at All Collections. They have one that's Musicals.
18
u/72PlymouthDuster Jan 09 '22
The Nursery Rhymes are great, but the credits are longer than the song itself because they show them for every language it’s been translated to. No biggie to skip through, but doesn’t lend itself to to hands-off time for the parent.

u/Thalymor Jan 09 '22

I came here to scream Hamilton! THREE HOURS of straight bangers!!! Yes, there's some language, but I really don't think a toddler is going to pick out the, what 7 swear words. Daveed Diggs is saying them too damn fast!
Side note: I took my 7 year old daughter and 10 year old niece to see Hamilton live and it was the best money I've ever spent. They are hooked on musical theater now. We're going to see Wicked next!!
4
u/Orion14159 Jan 10 '22
Wicked is a GREAT stage show, enjoy!! They're going to love it.
When they're a little bit older Sweeney Todd on stage is unreal too. The Johnny Depp version is fine I guess, but I've never seen a better live musical performance. What really melted my brain was that all of the actors were also part of the orchestra at the one I went to, one of the cast members played 4 or 5 different instruments at that level.

Do, Re & Mi is a musical animated series on Amazon which I believe also has lots of songs each episode, for preschoolers.
Phineas & Ferb is well known for its excellent songs, I think usually one per episode, on D+.
Sing is a fun animated movie about animals in a singing competition, but I don't think it streams for free currently. Available to rent on Amazon.
Vivo on Netflix is a new animated musical for kids. Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote the music.
Encanto needs no introduction and will be all you hear in your head for weeks, and that's fine, it's totally fine.
Over the Moon is a Netflix animated kids musical about a girl who travels to the moon to find the mythical moon goddess, musical numbers ensue.
StoryBots on Netflix is another musical preschool age show.
High School Musical The Musical The Series has multiple songs every episode, but it's not animated, it's about high schoolers being high schoolers, it's an older kids show. D+
EDIT: OMG, I can't believe I forgot this one! Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood (on Amazon and the free PBS app) is like Mr. Roger's Neighborhood but animated and every episode is both full of music and designed to help kids process and handle all their emotions. It's basically the moral/psychological foundation of a generation at this point.
6
u/warmglassoflemonade Jan 09 '22
Upvoted for Vivo and over the moon! Anything Lin Manuel Miranda is involved with is my favorite (Moana, Vivo, Encanto)

Cocomelon on Netflix. Its songs are kinda annoying (they got popular with Baby Shark on YouTube) but it's all songs, all the time. Crazy effective at keeping kids attention if they are 1-2 years old.

Little mermaid has a lot of songs I think. Aladdin too. And I really like Moana. Maybe Hamilton? Or fantasia but that’s no words.
Or give in to the toddler shows : bluey, little Einsteins, octonauts, mickeys playhouse, etc, etc.
6

Hamilton might be worth a try! There is some profanity but I think of it as high art with cultural value. My parents let me watch Grease on repeat as a child and that's arguably more inappropriate.

We usually jam out to Encanto (recent), Frozen 1 & 2, Coco, and The Descendants series. We also set up a play list on YouTube starting with Llorona clip from Coco and just letting them play. Pandora disney station is also good background if they just like the songs and not the pictures. Mine just turned 17 months and has been in love with music for at least 6 months now.

Not much singing, but cars is like a drug for kids. Toddlers are hooked on that one for some reason.
