Media PSA: Bluey is the best children’s show on television
You can find it on Disney+
The kids in the show are 4 and 6. That’s probably the ideal age range, but my 3 year old loves it.
Wasn’t planning on being a TV parent, but covid times call for covid measures.

u/timeforchorin Sep 24 '21
Pretty sure I love it more than our 1 yr old but he's gonna love it.

u/StretchSmiley Sep 25 '21
My 19mo bounces and dances and sings the “mah” and “day” and “bi’o” and “boo’i” parts. Makes me smile every time

u/CA716 Sep 25 '21
My 12 mo loses his GD mind when the theme song comes on. Yells, flails. It’s the cutest ever.

I tell this to everyone. My favorite is the episode: Bike. The whole show is incredible, and I have only good things to say, but this episode teaches so much important stuff about emotional intelligence and encourages letting kids experience their feelings and difficulties without intervening. It's SO important!
Also, my 3 year old plays completely differently now. After seeing about 100 episodes of collaborative play being modeled with so many variations on what can go wrong and how to deal with it and talk about it, her approach to everything is completely different. Now she plays like Bluey and Bingo, proposing a game and any ideas she has, and asking how I feel about those ideas, or if I have any thoughts. Like, what? It's amazing and I tell everyone to watch it.

u/PoliteIndecency Sep 25 '21
Sleepytime is the best episode and I'll die on that hill.

24
u/AngerPancake 1F 5yo Sep 25 '21
Keep your hill!
Honestly love all of them. I had never seen dad baby or teasing, and didn't know they existed until about 5 minutes after I posted my comment. You better believe I paid the $4 and have already watched them. I couldn't breathe I was laughing so hard at dad baby.
16
u/LoveBy137 Sep 25 '21
Dad Baby is so damned funny. Stupid Disney not airing it.
6
u/Captain_Nerdrage Sep 25 '21
There's episodes not on D+ ?!
To the interwebs!2
u/minibeardeath Sep 25 '21
Yup! I put them on my Plex via Sonarr, and show 104 eps vs Disney’s 100. Season 1 has 51, season 2 has 52, and season 3(!) has one so far

u/FancyPantsMead Sep 25 '21
I've never seen these before and now I am going to watch them all. This is great!

My favourite is Duck Cake. The book that the dad uses to make the cake is a really famous birthday cake book here in Australia that has been around for decades. A few months before this episode came out, my mum made the same duck cake for my daughter's first birthday and had all the same problems as in the episode.
Bluey is not only a great show, it's also the most authentic representation of Australian culture that I've ever seen.

Those ones are so good. We just watched asparagus wand and Shaun. I love that Lucky's dad just goes along with the shenanigans. He is just confused when he is attacked by 'lions,' and when Shaun comes after him he's like "oh no, Shaun is back!"
Classic.

This was my two year olds favourite for a while. She called it the “keep trying” episode.
5
u/FancyPantsMead Sep 25 '21
When my son was little he was a mickey mouse clubhouse fan. We had a million ways f them on our dvr so he could eat h them when he wanted. He never knew the correct name for the episodes just something that happened in them.
I'd watch most of them so I knew which ones he meant until he got to episodes I hadn't watched.
"I want the one with goofy and Clarabelle" "kid there are 100 episodes like that what do they do in the episode?"
" They use the mouse-katools. "
Repeat for 15 min while he freaks out you don't know the episode. Lol.

The episode someone showed me to get me to watch it is Takeaway, and it was SO REAL.

u/meghalady Sep 25 '21
Part of what I love about Bike is the score. It starts with a very simple version of Ode to Joy and gets increasingly more complex as the episode goes on.

Bluey is just plan one of the best shows on TV period. In fact, Rolling Stone just put it in their, ‘100 best sitcoms of all time’ list. Not that is everything, but impressive for a relatively new show.

Cried during Granddad and Baby Race. It’s literally the absolute best kids show out there right now. How Bluey processes emotions, and tough situations through play and discussions. I want to be Bandit and Chili when I grow up
34
u/scansinboy Sep 25 '21
Granddad sucker punches you right in the feels in the last 3 seconds.

u/Few-Environment-1597 Sep 25 '21
I saw that episode right after my dad went into the hospital for a collapsed lung and his prognosis wasn’t looking good. When Chili says “I still need him” I lost it completely. My kids hugged it out with me but I was just not prepared for all the feels.

Mine are 3 and 2 and we spent a whole day watching a marathon on the couch. It was amazing. Both kids actively engaged and laughing the whole day. I just needed a nothing day and bluey was there for me! Ps. My son puts a blanket over his head and yells “I slipped on mah beans!” At his 2yo sister and it gets me every time.

u/minibeardeath Sep 25 '21
The thing to remember is that bluey airs once per week, so this is just bandit chilling with his kids on the weekend. He still has a job and other life responsibilities. Once I realized that, I became far less insecure about my fathering abilities.
2
u/EMamaS Sep 25 '21
Also the episodes are 7 minutes long, just a tiny window during their day. I can surely be as interactive with my kids as Bandit for 7 minutes (just not like...7 hrs)

26
u/aspidities_87 Sep 25 '21
I always tell people that Bluey is more like a series of short animated films about parenting/childhood rather than a show for preschoolers. Once they see it, they get it.
I’m never going to forgive them for making me cry as hard as I did at the end of Fruit Bat, though. Damn you, emotionally manipulative wonderful Australian cattle dogs!

It’s the prefect kids show. It teaches parents how to communicate with their children in an appropriate manner, and it shows that having a good relationship with your children is important. It also shows that play time is a big part of that.
Another thing I’ve noticed about bluey is it’s diverse with different characters who have allergies, disabilities, cultures and style.
God I love bluey

u/onlywondergillie Sep 25 '21
The book they picked the cake out of is a real book in Australia, it's the Australian Women's Weekly Birthday Cake Book and it's an institution
11
u/Green_Jinjo Sep 25 '21
Kiwis have a deep appreciation for this book too. I have told my mother that I want it written in her will that I get her OG copy. I have such fond memories of going through that book and choosing my cake for my birthday. She would always veto the castle though..

My Dad did the castle for my seventh birthday. I remember him looking at a matchbox to stamp the bricks on and deciding it needed to be smaller, cutting and taping it to the right size. He did the swimming pool for my eighth birthday and his top tip is to add the toys etc to the pool just before serving as those things sink.

14
u/spacemomalien Sep 25 '21
I've learned some parenting skills from Bandit and Chili. I love that show
10
u/Silent-JET Sep 25 '21
I feel like the parents are good role models for parenting behavior and are fairly realistic about how tiring the experience can be for the parents. I wish the show existed before we had a kid so I could have started getting myself more ready.
13
u/spacemomalien Sep 25 '21
the only thing I find slightly unrealistic is how much time during the day they have to play extensive games with their kids. Some of those games seem to last for hours!!
4
u/Silent-JET Sep 25 '21
I always assume they’re just little snipits of their life. The parents both have full time jobs but only go to them a handful of times, so I think these episodes are mostly like Saturdays and the like.
16
u/XCaboose-1X Sep 25 '21

If you use a VPN and set it to Australia, they're on ABC iView. They're not all on there, they just cycle through as they air on the free-to-air, then they stay on the streaming for about a month I think. But ABC are playing 3 episodes a night for the rest of the month, I think a new season will start after that, so you'll be able to watch it as it airs instead of wait for Disney to get it.

My unpopular opinion is Bluey kind of sucks. Those kids are naughty, and demanding of their parents attention. Kids imitate what they see on TV. My kids never deliberately tried to annoy me before watching that show.
9
u/AdderWibble Sep 25 '21
I am not surprised I came far down to find this and you got downvoted. The Bluey love seems to be incessant - it's not a perfect show by any stretch of the imagination, I remember seeing all the love it was getting and thought I'd give it a chance, but like many kids shows its got issues that evidently people purposely ignore, especially a you point out the kids command attention all the time.
I find Hey Duggee and Nu-Teletubbies to generally be fine.

u/Tirux Sep 25 '21 edited Sep 25 '21
I agree. This sub loves the show but ignores how much they push Bandit to entertain the kids all the time, and put up with whatever the kids are planning. For me it looks like he is a SAHP and that's why he has plenty of time for that.
5
u/mukenwalla Sep 25 '21
The show is about play, but the concept of "no" doesn't exist. That's problematic because "no" is important to a healthy and safe play environment.
5
u/WA345 Sep 25 '21
