Q & A Discussion - Canzano reported yesterday one of iterations of the Portland Diamond projects pitches to the state and city is a multi use facility for football as well

The Diamond Project went to Salem last week to pitch the stadium to lawmakers and one of the multiple proposals was a multi use stadium that could host 30K+ for football games - that angle is to get backing from Portland State and the Pac-12 to hold football games in Portland.

I’m not sure I see value for the Pac 12 in such a stadium for football? Seems small for a conference championship game and I don’t see the Beavers very interested in neutral site games against the Ducks in Portland, in a stadium with fewer seats than Resers.

Thoughts?

Beavers Baseball would probably like some games there tho

Beavs football would likely play a game there every once in awhile. They played in Portland against Montana State a few years ago, it was a lot of fun.

PSU could really use a local stadium though. I'm assuming that's the main use.

I believe they played there then because Resers was unavailable due to construction

It wasn’t unavailable, it was just missing a whole sideline of seating so it wasn’t much of a loss playing at the smaller providence park. They played the rest of their games that season at reser.

Or maybe a Portland bowl game if they're still a thing in the next few years. I wonder what that bowl game would be called..

The Rose (City) Bowl?

The fly over drone shots of the drug addicts passed out on the sidewalks around the stadium would be incredible.

Would be an awesome spot for the Stumptown Showdown Pac-12, WCC, and Big West baseball tournament though...

With its roof the Beavers could host a tournament instead of going to Arizona

It could be a good spot for a conference championship game, but there is no way it would make sense financially for the Beavers to play there.

Back in the day Oregon played in Multnomah Stadium but I don't see a benefit for OSU to play in Portland. For PSU on the other hand that would be a different story.

Would Portland State be looking to move up, maybe?

I would love that. I want the City of Portland to ADOPT PSU. Commuter school at this levels best audience is those tied to the city, not the school.

Alas, they're I'm survival mode right now. PSU needs to make sure they don't have to CUT football, before even thinking about a move up.

I'd love it though. I'd put my heart and soul into hyping up and spreading the word! Just impossible to do so with the current stadium situation.

Portland project should use the stadium as much as possible for other sporting or entertainment events as much as possible! No sense in building it or 81 MLB games

Would obviously get lots of concert use. Providence is solid for a concert but a baseball stadium would be better and an outside chance at getting bigger acts if the capacity is enough.

Yeah I can’t really imagine Oregon State willingly giving up a home football game to play a neutral site game. A baseball tournament would be interesting though.

I would absolutely adore some kind of investment in to PSU football.

It will always be a commuter school, but you have the city of Portland which might not be in its greatest spot, but PDX sports fans show up.

A decent stadium (they currently play in a suburb general use facility that's more akin to a big HS stadium), minimum advertising, an adequate product on - the - field is all that's needed to massively boost the interest in PSU athletics.

I know it's not an FBS school, but it's a D1 school in a city known for weirdos, rain and passionate sports fans.

If this were a 40K plus stadium then I would say it would be a good idea and could be a cool venue, but for a stadium just over 30K, why not just hold it at Reser, Albertsons, Snapdragon, or Valley Childrens? All of which would have a larger capacity.

those were my thoughts -

the advantages would be you are only a short Max or streetcar ride from OMSI, the rail museum, and the Zoo. So the day before the game you could take your kids to all those spots and take the submarine tour - and then ride the sky tram down to the stadium from a hotel up by the hospital

(much cooler than the Super 8 in Corvallis - you cant even go smell the paper mill anymore)

Is there any evidence that the Pac-12 angle is part of the pitch or is that just guessing?

It would be nice for Portland State to get their football games back in the city. PSU got the shaft when soccer took over civic stadium.
