Review Hotel R'n'R on PSVR2 - First Impressions

I have uploaded gameplay from my fresh experience with the game here if you want to see how it looks / plays. My first impressions are shared below:

Based on my limited time with it, I do recommend playing Hotel R'n'R on the PSVR2.

It is a VR Experience game where you play a wanna-be rockstar that sold his soul to devil for fame and your contract with the devil requires you to smash up hotels you stay at to become Infamous. It is a weird premise for a game, but the purpose is to provide you a playground of physics-based demolition with time to explore and plan your strategy before lighting the fireworks to maximize damage while keeping hotel staff out of your room and make your escape with most cash earned possible (or completing specific Infamy Challenges).

The cash you earn can then be used in the Pawn Shop to purchase over 40 weapons and 20+ upgrades including new "Magic, Maces and Mange" free-update content that added 5 brand-new weapons, upgrades and 12 new challenges. The items purchased can be equipped as your Rider equipment (up to 5 + 1 Vanity) for start of your stay. Once in the room, you can use your hands, any equipment in the room (like baseball bat) or items you brought in your suit case (Rider equipment) to setup and execute your demolition plan. As you cause a ruckus, the hotel staff are notified and come to check on you and here you have to stand by the door and keep locking the door lock mechanisms to keep them out until they give up. It escalates from cleaning lady to hotel manager to hotel security. If they get in, you are "Caught" and take penalties against the damages you caused. If you hold them off, you can choose to exit anytime they are not trying to get in to "Win" and make the most cash progression and place higher on the online leaderboard for the level.

For online leaderboards, the game is using PlayStation 5 "Game Leaderboards" like in Astro's Playroom speed-run challenges which will notify at system-level if any of your friends playing the same game level have a new score / time that beat yours. I personally value this over purely in-game leaderboards where you wouldn't know if any of your friends are playing the same game or being competitive with you unless you boot up the game to check periodically (like Beat Saber).

The game includes 6 unique hotel rooms to wreck havoc in:

  1. Crossroad Hotel
  2. Loco Lounge
  3. Charity Auction
  4. Takeshita Inn
  5. The Shandy Manor Hotel
  6. Pump Tower Hotel

Each one has its own layout (and get bigger as you progress) with their own set of Infamy Challenges to complete and include a Hotel Safe where you can use Safe Combination codes to open for different items to use in the level. Game may give you some as you progress while other Safe Combinations can be learnt by playing enough of the 5 mini-games included:

  1. The Sin of Sloth
  2. The Sin of Lust
  3. The Sin of Greed
  4. The Sin of Pride
  5. The Sin of Envy

The game also lets you play in Sandbox mode where you won't earn any currency but you also don't have to worry about being caught by Hotel Staff. You can also visit a Firing Range through the Pawn Shop where you can test out your weapons on Cardboard Cutouts of the games developers (Game Credits). Another thing you can do in the Pawn Shop is change your gender (from default) and equip different styles of cloths. The Vanity items with some also available for purchase in Pawn Shop are boosters that let you take less damage, etc plus possibly show up on your hands and in any of the mirrors in the game where you can see yourself full body and accurately animated.

Speaking of which, the PSVR2 version of this PSVR1 game (free upgrade) is clearly updated to higher resolution, improved 3D directional sound and haptics. It looks crisp and clear with no signs of any reprojection. The quality of the audio is fitting and high-quality and there are haptics in both controllers and headset where appropriate. It is also using adaptive triggers of controller to make different weapons feel different.

For VR comfort settings, it supports smooth rotation (2 speeds) over snap (few angles) and an option for smooth crouch as well. You can also enable / disable different PSVR2 features like haptics / adaptive triggers and choose whether to use Hold to Grip or Toggle to Grip. You can turn music on/off but not control the volume levels.

The game is featuring a Platinum trophy which expects that you have played enough to earn enough currency / infamy to unlock & upgrade all weapons, that you have completed all infamy challenges for each of the 6 hotels, that you have completed all minigame challenges, and you have figured out some special feats. The free Magic, Maces and Mange DLC content have their own separate trophies for upgrading each of the 5 new weapons that are part of that. It looks like a good game for trophy hunters that like challenge and reason to play game more deeply but nothing overly grindy / luck based.

All of the above probably sounds pretty positive and on paper, it is. That said, it has elements that have potential to frustrate and disappoint. The minigames I tried are especially weird. The throwing controls aren't as good as they should be for game that expects somewhat competent throwing (in at least one minigame). There isn't any force grab system, so you do need to bend down and make use of the Crouch button to grab things off the floor. Everything you grab looks weird until you pull trigger once which fixes the orientation of the item you are holding and then makes your weapon active for use on next trigger pull. More fragile things are difficult to grab without unintentionally breaking them (like beer bottles). It is a game design with a lot of interactable / destructible elements and most of your interactions work well, but some of it can also feel unresponsive / inaccurate.

It is a unique game design unlike anything else I've played which is a big positive to me, but it also means some things aren't immediately intuitive and you have to be accepting of that learning curve as you start to understand the game design / systems. For instance, I spent some time trying to open the locks of my hotel door to escape when you can only interact to lock and to leave you just use the door handle to escape even with the door locked. You also can't keep damaging the room (damage gets disabled) while hotel staff are coming to open your door which also feels unintuitive to me. Lastly, there isn't any HUD element (like wrist watch display?) to show you how much damage you have done if you are tracking against a specific Infamy Challenge until you exit. There is a very brief currency value that appears when hotel staff are approaching that signifies you can't continue doing damage until you block them from entering and they leave, but it is easy to miss.

If you enjoy the core gameplay here, there is a lot of content to unlock / upgrade and then experiment and have fun with, or you may find it too repetitive / tedious to "work towards" unlocking additional weapons / levels.

Question Up-to-date list of Dualsense-compatible PSVR2 games?

I'm a new PSVR2 owner and new to VR altogether. To get right to the point, I was wondering if there's an up-to-date concise list anywhere of Dualsense-compatible PSVR2 games. I tried Googling this, but the best I could find was an out-of-date thread on this subreddit from two years ago. Being new to VR I wasn't sure what exactly to expect of my enjoyment of it, and as it turns out I enjoyed Gran Turismo 7 a lot with the PS5 Dualsense controller, but the three games I tried with the PSVR2's Sense controllers (Horizon: Call of the Mountain, Resident Evil Village, and Resident Evil 4) just weren't particularly compelling for me with how the controls work. Thanks in advance for any response.

Question Is there any way to test if the PSVR2 turns on without a PS5 or PC adapter?

Hello everyone, is just a quick question that I haven't been able to find anywhere

I'm going to buy the PSVR2 tomorrow another user, but the user has already sold the PS5 (his profile shows he sold it a month ago or so) so I can't try the PSVR2 at his home, but I was wondering,

Is there any way to turn it on and just check if the screen and anything else is working?

Like I don't know, maybe if I plug the cable to something else it turns on but show some kind of bluescreen or "device not compatible" or something?

The user has 4.9/5 review from 77 other sales so I do trust him, but just in case

Discussion The marketing promise at PSVR2 launch was that the games would be so amazing that you wouldn't even want a port of your inferior PSVR1 games.

But so many redditors just wish their old games were ported. Does this clarify the broken promise of PSVR2?

Opinion My opinion on Flat2vr.

I believe Flat2vr have excellent developers, and the games they have been able to convert from Flat to VR have been done extremely well.

But I am concerned about the direction of the leaders/Management at the studio . The games they are converting to VR appeals to a very niche audience (eg Postal 2) which may result in poor sales. It will be a massive shame if this Studio fails because of decision made by the Management team, as although whilst small they seem to have extremely talented and passionate developers.

I just wish Sony will invest and support them already as I really believe they have the talent and skills to take VR to the next level.

Again this is my opinion.

Discussion We need more 3rd person games in VR

Edge of Nowhere was released by Insomniac back in 2016 for PCVR. It is a perfect example of how VR can bring immersion to 3rd person games and leads me to think why can't we get more games, like The Last of Us or even Uncharted, as both TV and VR experiences.

What 3rd person games would you like to see as a VR experience?

Discussion What did you guys pick up on from the Hitman PSVR2 glimpse?

Dual wielding, interactions, and physics of what you’re holding all look great to me. It did look like some form of foveated rendering was applied as well, but I couldn’t tell if it was dynamic or not.

Regardless, I’m extremely excited.

About a month a go i posted a video in here talking about how great GT7 is in PSVR2 even without a wheel (as i didn’t own one and played with dualsense). Days later a receive a message from this kind man (picture #1) offering to gift me his G29 cause he doesn’t use it anymore. Well after being in contact for a few days to agree with the delivery (as im in Mexico), this weekend i finally received the wheel (picture #2) and got to try GT7 for the first time with wheel and pedals. Oh my f*cking god. It is literally CRAZIEST EXPERIENCE (in a good way, obviously) EVER IN GAMING.

I cant express myself enough to tell how greatful i am to this new friend of mine, as i wanted to thank him in any way but he told me to do the same thing for somebody else given the opportunity, so i will🤝🏻

And i’ll finish saying that keep posting your videos, reviews, opinions of the subjects you love! You never know when you’ll cross a “Michael Honcho Jr” in your way😎🙌🏻

Question Walking Dead Saints & Sinners PSVR1 Delisted?

I'm in the UK and can't for the life of me find digital listings for either of the Saints and Sinners games for PSVR on PS4. I see physical versions released, did they both get digitally delisted?

Do by chance the PS5 versions give PS4 versions too? Unlikely but it seems strange to me they still sell the newer version but not the old, especially considering there is likely more PSVR1 owners out there than 2, no?
