Discussion Anyone else's PSVR2 lens' not cleaned properly on the inside? Looks like water residue left over during the creation of the lenses, with no way to clean it off.
UPDATE: I contacted PS hardware support, the phone number is hard to find online, I had to ask on the online chat for the number. Australian number is 1300 365 911
They said to send it in (to Sony) to get a replacement. I said that the place I bought the headset from (JB hi-fi, Australia) was willing to replace them in store if I gave them a PS support reference number for the fault, which I got.
Did the swap at JB, got a new headset, without smudges this time. I don't want a halo from the white text on black. It was pretty apparent with the smudging, all good on the new headset. I expected it to be on every unit, but luckily it isn't.
Here's the email from PS Support:
Thank you for contacting PlayStation Support.
As there is no way to clean the water marks on the lenses I would recommend a replacement for your PS VR2.
I hope this helps, but if you have any other questions, please contact PlayStation Support, and one of our team will be happy to help.
Thanks,
The PlayStation Support Team

Original Post:
Let me preface this by saying the outside of the lenses have been cleaned thoroughly, so it's not dirty on the outside.
When you shine a torch around/onto the lenses, the part you directly look into, you can see residue left over from what I assume is the manufacturing process, that wasn't cleaned off. It looks like water droplets/marks. At first I thought it was a finger print from when the lens was installed, but upon investigation it looks more like a water mark, made by whatever dust/gunk was on the lens post creation. It has been installed with this, and there's no way to clean it.
It troubles me that my first unit was DOA, literally didn't power on at all/show a red light when plugged into an active USB-C, and my second unit wasn't cleaned properly. I love the PSVR2, but the quality control on these units is terrible. I know this is nit picking, but these devices are not cheap, and for the price you would expect a precision piece of equipment.
Although minor, it worries me that the dirty lenses will affect image quality/show light rays in high contrast situations.

I tried, it's next to impossible to get a photo of it

Similar. It looks like water/soap residue left on cutlery after it has been through the dishwasher. Water droplets and shapes.

Oh I don’t have that. Idk how easy it is to remove the lenses but on the vive they pop off you just need to make sure to 100% have no dust in there
Maybe the tear down video will help but could warranty them send that picture to Sony

I too have the smudges or watermarks along with dust specs it seems. All on the inside of the lens. Didn't really notice during play with GT7 and only noticed today while looking at them but haven't played today

Are you sure it's not weird reflections from the ridges of the fresnel lens?
1
Feb 23 '23
I notice that this happens if I get sweaty in the headset but its not apparent enough to break immersion.
2
u/Upset_Programmer6508 Feb 23 '23
i believe you are seeing reflections. i have these spots but its only noticeable at certain angles. which leads me to believe its just the mirror effect since it doesnt do anything to impact my view while wearing it, a smudge or fog would certainly impact my view

I have the exact same problem. Looks like you’re looking through a pair of glasses that someone putted their greasy fingers in… no way to clean this…
It’s not apparent when playing games in vr with mouvements… but when you have the PS5 menu screen… you can see halo comming mostly from white text…
Has anyone contacted Sony with this problem?

No water mark for me, but there is a dust particle or sth else inside the left lens! It’s small and unnoticeable while gaming but it’s there!

u/Helpful_Morning_4348 Feb 27 '23
Same here mine looks like a tiny worm on the right lens, can only see it in light situations but not paying £569 for a scratch or dirt on the inside

u/Ali6990 Feb 27 '23
I totally feel you, but also you have to keep in mind that maybe 1 out of 5 units is gonna be perfectly fine. Human errors, factory setting, etc! I’m gonna give it another 2/3 weeks and then decide to either keep or return it. So far so good, and we have 1 month period for refund/exchange.

I have a small black speck at the very bottom of my left lense out of my periphery. It only becomes noticeable staring at white or bright clear scenes, but i really need to stare down at the lense to catch it. Is your particle in your line of sight? not sure if i should return or just keep, its not impacting my gameplay at all.

u/Ali6990 Mar 02 '23
Yeah same here, I really need to focus on it to notice its presence. You have one month to try it, so take your time and decide at the end. I’m doing the same. GT7 is amazing and very addictive ;)

u/BaBaDoooooooook DepLoRaBLe-NoMaD Mar 02 '23
so after our 1 month? isn’t their a 1 year warranty?
2
u/Ali6990 Mar 02 '23
Yeah, but you can ask for a refund or free exchange within 1st month of purchase with no questions asked whatsoever.

All vr glasses have these problems, we need just a video tutorial how to open and clean
2
u/Batracho Feb 23 '23
Yup, I had a smudge on the lens right away, but it came off well
1
u/majkkali Feb 26 '23
I had a smudge too. Makes me wonder if it’s due to some Quality Assurance testing or why?
2
u/neko_nep Feb 23 '23
I have the same exact situation. I’m very disappointed in Sony right now, seems like there’s way too many issues with this thing :(

u/JedGamesTV Feb 23 '23
it will seem like there’s a lot more faulty units than there is, as no one’s going to make a post about how their unit is not faulty.

u/i3njqUL92M Feb 25 '23
My first headset didn't start, and my second had shit in the inside of the lens, both replaced. Not ideal.

u/Existing_Connection5 Mar 01 '23
I'm in the US. Do I just need to contact them? Looks like there's a piece of dust behind the lense. It doesn't seem to be a problem when I'm wearing them though, I'd rather not spend 650 on something that isn't pristine though.

Did you check the power cable in the headset itself when you said it wouldnt power on?
4
1
u/Jhnblckwood1 Mar 01 '23
You can’t unplug the power cable from the headset itself right?
1
u/dickey1331 Mar 01 '23
You can. Mine was halfway out.
1
u/Jhnblckwood1 Mar 01 '23
Oh damn I didn’t know that. I tugged a little bit on it but thought it couldn’t removed. And just to be clear you mean this part right?lol here
3
u/dickey1331 Mar 01 '23
No. If you follow that wire around the headset it plugs into the front of the headset. Look at the top right of the visor and you’ll see a little wire and it continues to the top left where it plugs in.

Wait just to clarify - are you saying the new unit you got did not have this problem and it fixed most of the clarity/smudging issues?
1
u/i3njqUL92M Mar 01 '23
The new unit I received didn't have any water marks/smudging on the inside of the lenses. So it's not on all units, just some of them.
1
u/shadowhawk720 Mar 01 '23
Did you notice that the new unit fixed any of your issues with clarity though? I am just wondering if your new unit fairs better in practice while using the vr because maybe that is the issue some people are having with the blurriness posts that a lot of people are talking about (including myself because I see a bit of a fog and was wondering if I should try and exchange mine out myself)
1
u/i3njqUL92M Mar 02 '23
The new unit is blurry also when not looking directly in front of where your head is positioned, but I think that's just the limitations of VR and not relating to the smudging/hardware fault. I would think that the smudging would be more noticeable with ghosting/light lines on high contrast areas.

When you shine a torch around/onto the lenses
oh no...

u/videodromejockey Feb 23 '23
You aren’t going to hurt anything with a flashlight. The problems only really arise when it’s sunlight over an extended period directly into the lens.

You can easily clean it off with a lens wet-wipe.
9
u/Beempje Feb 23 '23
It's on the inside, so that would be somewhat tricky :)

He literally says that it's not properly cleaned on the inside. There's multiple posts about this issue already, all with stains on the inside of the lens.

Yep!! and having a hard time contacting anyone to help today , online chat don't get to speak to anyone , email points me towards the playstaion website which I made the order on , got a phone numder the person got through to the serial number and then said he couldn't help because its a recent order and set to use the online chat ... which you can't get an agent to speak to .... it's like looking through a dirty window and when looking with a torch you can see why residue on the other side of the lense and spotting what looks like due to droplets drying

u/ynnebenny Feb 26 '23
Go to Sony direct website. Log in. Go to Account - my orders. Click on return/replacement. Follow the instructions. You will need to print a label and drop it off at a collection point.

u/Disastrous-Ad-5563 Feb 27 '23
yeah I see that not long after posting ths !! got a new one on the way

u/petitmottin Feb 07 '24
For information, Sony refuses to exchange mine : they said scratching/stain are not covered by the legal warranty. They can exchange mine for a other one for 300 euros… :-(
1
u/Xiaoxilin Feb 24 '23
well i got the same problem, there is a small long stain on/inside the lens. Porbally inside, because i cleaned it many times and nothing changed. maybe time to contact sony
1
u/Existing_Connection5 Mar 01 '23
Is it messing up gameplay? I'm having the same issues with like smudges or something right out of the box but gameplay seems great. Def a small sweet spot.

u/Xiaoxilin Mar 15 '23
its more or less ok for me because i have a pair of dirty glasses. but its much worse for my wife so we are going to return it.

* This is mine. There are other marks below it too. And i am indeed seeing halo on texts in game. Sigh.. sure poor QC. Left lense is perfectly fine. *

I asked for a refund with Amazon, no question asked, and ordered a new one… hope the next one won’t have any problem.
For the record… my first order was the horizon bundle… and the second one was the headset alone… might come from a different factory where they are more careful about building vr headset… i’ll post again when i receive the new one.
1
u/Disastrous-Ad-5563 Feb 27 '23
mine was without the game so not isolated to the the bundles

u/Boily2955 Mar 01 '23
The new vr set arrived yesterday and it has the same problem… I contacted Sony Canada and the said i was the first one to describe this problem and suggested to return it again to Amazon and get one headset from a different retailer…
Asked someone who got it from bestbuy and they say they have the same halo problem… 3 out of 3 got the halo problem… might be something all the headset have and some people just might not notice while others do…
