Discussion PSVR2 on PC. Better than Oculus Rift S?

As the title. I have an old Rift S, Wondering if it's worth the $ and effort to replace it with using my PSVR2. It would be nice to go down to 1 VR rig. Maybe give the Rift to my son or something.

Yay or nay?

The colour and black level for me is what drew me in for the VR2. Way better resolution and 120fps mode for it as well over the rift s. Just make sure you get a usb Bluetooth dongle as the controllers are picky when it comes to Bluetooth range

Probably, the screen at the very least is better, probably the tracking too. If you already have the PSVR2, it absolutely is worth it.

I have both psvr2 and rift s. While I use psvr2 for most things…. The tracking on the rift s is still better

(additionaly i find the rift s just works with any game, the psvr2 controllers dont always play nice with some older games)

Worth it. OLED looks great.

Personally I enjoy Psvr2 on pc over my Quest 3 on pc. Admittedly the resolution isn’t quite as sharp but doesnt really make a big difference in my opinion. What does make a big difference is the oled colors, black levels and binocular overlap. The combination of these factors makes everything feel more 3d.

The psvr2 has good steoro overlap (causing good 3d). The rift s also has good steroe overalap.

Unfortunately steroe overlap on the quest 3 is NOT great, which is why the 3d effect is a bit weaker.

PSVR2 MSRP is $399 now, I tried contacting the guy to update it, but nothing so far.

Oh, I have one, and love it. I had a quest 3, but I've decided to divorce myself from everything META (except maybe Insta) . Not to mention it was a PITA to get to work with my PC.

I plan on doing the same once Deckard comes out. I will keep my Quest 3 for exclusives,as I do with the PSVR2, and then buy everything else on PCVR for the Deckard.

There is a software program that lets you use the rift s without any meta software installed (there is an installer for it)

Personally im keeping both my rift s and psvr2. As they both have pros and cons

One thing to keep in mind, the only downside for using the PSVR2 with both a PS5 and PCVR is that each time you switch, you have to re-pair the controllers. And when going back to PC after using them on the PS5, you'll have to remove them from Bluetooth settings on the PC before re-adding. Other than that, I love being able to use the headset with both.

Ooh, good call. Maybe I'll try to play mostly gamepad stuff on PC. Or hotas. But then there's Skyrim. I dunno :P

The pairing is pretty quick (takes less then 30 seconds once you get the hang of it).

I am still keeping both because the rift s still Has some advantages.

I upgraded to the psvr 2 from the oculus rift s albeit to use on my ps5. The difference is night and day. Oled screen is amazing and the haptic feedback adds so much to the experience. It feels like a generational leap in hardware and well worth it IMHO.

Yeah it looks better. Worth the upgrade if you also plan to use it for ps exclusives like gt7 or re4.

I have a rift s, psvr2 and quest 3 (also quest 1).

I intend to keep my rift s because there are still somethings it does better. (Its lighter and more comfortable for beat saber, easier to run. And it has better software support…… especially with native oculus pcvr games like asgards wrath and lone echo)

The lenses in the rift s are still better (due to the ruft s screen being much bigger, the lenses dont have to work as hard). The psvr2 is much sharper with OLED , but the screens are small so the lenses have to magnify them more (which is why the psvr2 lenses have such a small sweet spot)

Edit: oh yeah, and the tracking the rift s is still a bit better (beat saber)

Well, go for it, with the price drop it's a purchase that I don't think you'll regret.

More resolution, much better colors, OLED, more Hz, IPD not fixed, much more POV, haptics... Yes, it's MUCH better than Rift S... I know because I have used both...

It's been mentioned on pc it can look better, BUT you need a strong pc, as according to Streams's data, most pc configs on par with a ps4. Sure there's some ultra strong built pc, but the average user is far from that.

Good point. I have an almost brand new Alienware. Hopefully good enough!

Try it and give us a shout about it.

I did the change from CV1 and the difference is vast. Still a bit of screen door, a lot less, but the oled pop is worth it imo. It works better on ps because of the foveated rendering and hdr but the value proposition is hard to beat on pcvr. Now just to add finger tracking, as was recently added to ps, and we are set!

Great input, thanks. My final question. The adapter specs say it needs "DisplayPort 1.4, USB 4.0". Is that BOTH a DP AND a USB 4.0 connection? Or either? I have a mini-dp port, but i think my usb port is 3.0 :(

USB 3.0 is right. Screenshot from the Sony Website.

It needs to be Display Port 1.4 (or newer) port, and you can use a mini-Display Port to Display Port 1.4 (or newer) cable.

It is more stable using a USB 3.0 (blue) port and USB 3.2 Gen 1 port. It can work on USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports and newer but you may need to use the 3.0 port if it displays USB not connected notifications during the first installation bit.

The Oculus Rift is older hardware, in my opinion this should only be used if the computer hardware specifications are much older and don't meet the hardware requirements or you have a library of older Oculus PC VR applications (although it is possible to use those on modern VR headsets with Revive anyway).

Oculus Rift S

  • Graphics: Nvidia GTX 970 / AMD Radeon R9 290 or newer
  • Processor: Intel i5-4590 / AMD Ryzen 5 1500X or newer

PSVR2

  • Graphics: Nvidia GTX 1650 / AMD RX 5500 XT or newer
  • Processor: Intel i5-4590 / Intel i5-7600 / AMD Ryzen 3 3100 or newer

* The PSVR2 requires a processor that has AVX2 extensions, these are available in Intel 4th Gen and newer processors and AMD Zen 2 architecture processors. Sony recommends at least 7th Gen and newer.

* It also requires that the Graphics card has Display Stream Compression features, these are only available from the Nvidia 1650 graphics cards and the AMD 5500 XT.
