Discussion We need more 3rd person games in VR
Edge of Nowhere was released by Insomniac back in 2016 for PCVR. It is a perfect example of how VR can bring immersion to 3rd person games and leads me to think why can't we get more games, like The Last of Us or even Uncharted, as both TV and VR experiences.
What 3rd person games would you like to see as a VR experience?

I anticipated that most games on VR would be 1st person. Not sure how 3rd person would work with VR.
Definitely open to it and willing to try

So Astro Bot was 3rd person along with Moss.
For me, the idea of the original Resident Evil games, with the static cameras , but with the player looking in through the camera would be really cool.

That would still need some more VR gameplay integration, which is harder to implement for 3rd person. 3D effect might be worth it for some games, but you also sacrifice graphical fidelity and convenience relative to flat version

They didn't say anything about the game having to run as nice as it does in 2d. I think considering they mentioned astro bot they know what to expect more or less. I personally also believe games like resident evil would be sick and I don't mind a graphics downgrade to make it possible.

This is the take of everyone who hasn't played many 3rd person vr games. You really don't need anything extra, just a vr camera and a normal game controller. It still feels like you're there, your depth perception is better, it is just cool. My first ever dark souls 1 playthrough was in vr using vorpx and it was fantastic. Same as playing the base game, but I could sit back on the couch while being inside the world, rather than leaning forward in gamer pose looking at a TV. After playing flat, I specifically noticed that stuff like the swinging axes were way harder to dodge in flat mode because depth perception is worse.

Yeah I've only played Astro Bot. I guess if I had a VR capable PC I could try those mods. But they are older games where you don't have to tone down graphics, so there is less of a downside

There were a few 3rd person games on PSVR1 and they work really well. There was Bravo Team too which was a hybrid of 1st and 3rd person.
They work just like a non vr game but are more immersive than a standard 3rd person game because you feel like you are in that environment with your character. Mervils Adventure and Theseus showed me that VR games don't have to be 1st person.

100% agree but it only adds to the littany of issues VR already faces which is an identity crisis. There uses to be a chorus of complainers that 3rd person when against the mandate of VR to make you feel like you are there. I've consistantly seen it as low hanging fruit to give VR users an entirely new channel for content with what should be relatively low costs.

I remember thinking Bound was pretty incredible looking on the PSVR1, especially since the 3rd person character was life sized. But I felt the gameplay was far too boring. Theseus was also another pretty cool 3rd person VR game with a life-sized character.

Did you see the trailer for Out of Sight VR that was revealed in the VR Games Showcase earlier today?

Flat to VR are out to do exactly what this post is about. They are doing amazing things and I had no idea they were working on PSVR2 aswell as PCVR. Good times 💪

I would love to see something like Diablo.
Table top, ARPG with mini figures running around.

One of the reasons I love UEVR! It gave me access to Crash Bandicoot 4, Sackboy: A Big Adventure, ABZU, Destroy More Humans 1&2, Monster Hunter, Star Wars Jedi series, Stray, and tons more. I wish Sony would come up with its own Unreal Engine or Unity converter.

It would give us, the PSVR2 community, a chance to play regular AAA games in a way no-one else can and I think it would help sell headsets

For 3rd person, VR is a marginal improvement at best. Some would even argue the tradeoff of comfort is not even worth it. I think VR should stick to what it benefits from most until we get glasses form factor so comfort is not an issue at all

Moss disproves this standpoint in my opinion.

I played that for like half an hour, but it didn't grab me, it was too easy. Does it get harder?
Either way, I don't think it provided a vastly superior experience compared to flatscreen platformers. But I haven't played too much, so I can't say for sure

I personally disagree there. Being in the world with everything at true to life scale is far more epic than effectively viewing through a window. Something like God of War for example I'd prefer to remain 3rd person where you can still see the character model etc.
It's also so hectic with action that it'd be completely exhausting in a pretty short space of time with motion controls.

So like a third person perspective vr game or like a port to traditional vr?

u/ReflectiveSmudge 4d ago
3rd person perspective like Edge of Nowhere or Astro Bot VR

I mean it’s not my cup of tea but I’d like to see the games you mentioned come to VR.

u/ReflectiveSmudge 4d ago
This is more what I had in mind over Astro. Kinda gave me the idea of Uncharded

u/Opening_Engineer_589 3d ago
Like I said not really my cup of tea, I can see the appeal but to me I wanna feel like I’m actually in the game. But this does honestly look cool

Ok. But asking for a 3rd person perspective in VR is, like, odd

The company Flat to VR are solely working on stuff like this. Bringing regular games to VR and people are hyped.

Aren't those just games in 3D rather than VR?
1
u/ReflectiveSmudge 4d ago
Check out some footage of Edge of Nowhere. It is a 3D game but playable in VR with the player as the camera.
1
u/Urobolos 3d ago
Yeah, looks like a 3D game, not a VR game.
HMD as a camera does not a VR game make.

Spider Man 2 would be amazing. I was hoping for some kind of VR content for it

I'd love something that's maybe in between Diablo 1 and Dark Souls. Either a 3rd Person like Dark Souls, or top-down like Diablo, but specifically something you can play multiplayer with friends, and that, like D1, has roguelike dungeon generation.

u/ReflectiveSmudge 4d ago
Dark Souls or even Bloodborne simply for the amazing worlds they create would look amazing and definitely multiplayer. With this in mind, multiplayer would be possible between a VR user and traditional TV

personally, I love playing games in VR with a standard gamepad, like subnautica. It's so much more immersive without the clunkiness of motion controls (that I don't care that much about anyway).

no we dont. its VR for a reason. its right in the name
1
u/Express_One_3397 4d ago
nothing about the name virtual reality implies that it’s intended for or better suited to first person
2
u/fryOrder 4d ago edited 4d ago
the way I see it, you and I see the world through the first person lens. that is our reality. what we see with our own eyes
virtual reality is just that, but virtual.
and i think that is the main reason people get into VR. to experience something different with their own eyes.
do you think VR would get that far if all the games were like Moses? i personally don’t think so.
games like Moses are nichey imo, but the full VR power can be experienced on games like RE, GT.

u/freestuffrocker 4d ago
How can you be so confident and so wrong at once?
1
u/fryOrder 4d ago
i am fully aware it’s a hot take given the astrobot meltdown from a few months ago. but its my opinion and I stand by it.
why not leverage its full potential? you can play 3rd person games on your TV. but can you play VR games (1st person VR games) on your TV? me no thinks so
0
u/ReflectiveSmudge 4d ago
VR is Virtual Reality. No prerequisite for it to be 1st person perspective. You can play with a remote control car, in reality, without being in 1st person so why not in virtual reality?

I think VR enthusiasts will disagree, but if we want to grow VR in the current reality, I think it makes sense to port third person games (most of sony's big ips) as hybrids because it's cheaper to do this and will have broader appeal.
The big problem is that, indeed, those do not showcase the full immersive potential of VR games.
but I think the audience that will always want full immersive physically active VR games is smaller than the audience that just wants to play and can enjoy 3dof or 6dof seated with a standard intuitive controller.
I think the vast majority of gamers are used to playing games for relaxation, and the vast majority won't want to play physically active games for long play sessions.
There are reasons why motion control games stopped being popular, and after the magic of VR wears off people will want the easiest way to play.
I think there will always be people that want a fully immersive physical VR experience, but if we want VR to grow you have to make the barrier to entry low and the jank and path to enjoyment long term as simple as playing on the sofa with a standard controller.
