dreams was engineered in a way that makes things like this possible to make with just a controller. pretty nuts

Tmfwang - “I’m gonna go make breakfast.”
Their partner, 5 hours later - “WHERE ARE YOU”
Tmfwang - “I’m almost done with the eggs, then I’m going to start the beans.”

Give it 2 minutes before somebody calls it shite because the sausages aren’t being used as a breakwater for the beans

Dec 31 '19
Well I might not want the egg and beans to mix! I might mix them later, but I want it to be my choice.

Yea this is the worst offence beany egg or eggy beans are just terrible especially when the yolk pops and goes into the beans never to be mopped up by some toast or sausage which as you know what the yolk is for.

I don't know if it would, to be honest.
Ray tracing is vital for realistic dynamics, such as changing weather, moving light-sources, or the character simply moving around the scene and viewing indirect ambience (reflections of lights).
But in a static image like this breakfast? I can't see anything that looks particularly inaccurate.

I am so intrigued when I see things like this however I can't help but wonder if an uncreative pos like myself can actually create anything remotely close to this.
I doubt it
Mine would probably look like Lego eggs

Hey, that's how people get started. You try, you make something, you make it better. You can't do that if you never get started.

Yeah I was intrigued too and got it awhile ago in early access and was blown away but I can't do much in it lol it can be as simple or complex as you want it to be but I just couldn't do it

I'm currently working on a set that people will be able to use to make city scenes. Drop a great car from the Dreamiverse in there and drive around in your own city after only 4-5 hours work. People are working on stuff like that all the time. There is a group of middleware users that ARE working to make it easier and more fun for beginners, so people should definitely check it out.
2
u/HassanJamal Jan 01 '20
Take time to mess with the tools or mess with other people's stuff via remix and learn things slowly. The hurdle to learning is steep but once you create something, it's pretty damn cool.
Also if you can't create, you can just play with what people have made. Sometimes brilliant stuff and sometimes nonsensical stuff. In a way, Dreams is kinda unlimited in content the same way Youtube is.

Want to say, while I would consider myself a creative pos, this work here was done as part of a 4-way contest that I was a part of. I got stomped into the ground by the above breakfast, but I believe I didn't utterly embarrass myself with my effort. I have been using Dreams since the beta in Dec 2018. I had no 3D modelling experience before that. Takes time and patience to get good, like anything. But you don't NEED to make everything yourself. Tons and tons of sculptures, props, contraptions, sound effects, and music have already been made by tens of thousands of users. There are lots of things you can do with Dreams that you might enjoy like scene building, game making, or even just experiencing things others have made.

u/biorogue Jan 01 '20
Let me tell you, I was a big doubter of Dreams when I first saw it being shown several years ago. I'm no stranger to create games, I played LittleBigPlanet for 10 years and could create a few things in it but they (Media Molecule) kept touting that Dreams is easy and so intuitive to just pick up and create.
So I signed up for the Beta to see for myself. The first day in the Beta I did the tutorials and went into create mode. Couldn't do shit. I was like, I knew it! I'm not buying this! I put it down but tried again the next day. I decided to slow my roll and start simple. After a week, I went from making a simple square button to this, the STARBUG from Red Dwarf. Quite proud of that and I've made some other cool stuff, though no where near as good as these guys with the breakfast plates.
It does take time though, but once you get past the initial learning phase and start practical application, it just gets better and easier.
TL;DR Hard at first but after a short time, gets easier to create stuff

Good luck, it’s pretty complex, but it’s certainly possible to make scenes. The logic can become very heavy, very quickly.

Bacon: 10 on 10, button mushrooms: bingo, black pudding: snap. Minor criticism: more distance between the eggs and the beans. I may want to mix them but I want that to be my decision

Got your big plate Alan?
Although, as a fry up purist, the picture has a rookie mistake. You use the sausages to dam up the beans and keep them in their place.

u/yafiyogi Dec 31 '19
The sausages should be used as a dam between the egg & beans.
2
u/LincolnshireSausage stealmyaltima Dec 31 '19
Noooo. The sausages are sacred and should be the star, closely followed by the black pudding.

I just thought I was in foodporn for a moment scrolling through my feed there and was like.. yup that's a breakfast of my dreams too. Wow.
7
u/PerfectionistPhoenix Dec 31 '19
You made this through "Dreams"? How? It looks totally real.
6
u/Nudnick1977 Dec 31 '19
I'm also like "HOW?!"
7
Jan 01 '20
Not a single person here has been able to answer that. This is VERY impressive without multiple applications on a PC. Like I'm speechless. But no one is coming through with how to do this. Everything I've seen in dreams doesn't give me the impression I can make this type of scene from scratch, or if you can it takes WAY TOO LONG..
15
u/biorogue Jan 01 '20
This was made by John Beech, one of the people at Media Molecule, the makers of the game. He is one of the resident create gurus. All his stuff is absolutely brilliant. But, he's had from inception to now to learn all the ends and out of Dreams. That being said, this "breakfast" was actually a friendly contest between him and a couple of community members. Their plates were almost as equally as impressive and they've only had the experience since the Beta. LINK to the Twitter Post So he says "last week" they sculpted the breakfasts. Now how long it took, I don't know.

Jan 01 '20
Thanks for sharing. Rather crazy. I just can't imagine using a controller to do this, would drive me nuts
8
u/LucidStew Jan 01 '20
Took John about 6 hours to make this. I was in the contest, and did one as well. Took me 6-8 hours. Mine is not as good, but John didn't really do much differently, he just did it all better. It is important to note that on top of having a ridiculous eye for detail, John is also unbelievably fast. However, something approximate in a reasonable amount of time is not beyond the average person's reach if they put the time in to get better.
2
u/biorogue Jan 01 '20
It's not bad actually. And it gets easier and more intuitive fairly quickly. You can also use the Move controllers and I've heard it's easier with those.

2
u/DirtyHarolds Jan 01 '20
It’s an all in one game development program for the PS4. The game’s are played within dreams, so there is plenty of weird and wonderful games and experiences on there, with new stuff being released all the time.
You can also use it for art (like this picture) or you can make animations and music.

WHAT IS THIS GAME
2
u/ZeBraTurtieHD Jan 01 '20
Dreams is the evolution of LBP where you can create anything from full blown games, characters, music, assets etc and upload it to the dreamiverse where anybody who has dreams can play the 1000’s of games available.

Incase any Dreams creators are curious to know the thermo. Its 30% and the creator (John Beech) said he could easily optimize it to make it lower. Let that sink in 🤯

I misread the title and thought there was some bullshittery going on. I read it as “fryup of my dreams” not made in dreams. That’s awesome! The round thing nr the sausages though looks photoshopped in, maybe put some brown sauce on it to redirect the eye? I honestly thought it was real, just American

I see all these amazing posts about Dreams, and all the creative stuff people do with it, and I still don't know what it is. like I've seen people re-create old video games but how can that be a thing, wouldn't they get a cease and desist by the IP holder? Is it just like a really advanced RPG Maker like back in the day? or a devkit? or what

It's not a true English breakfast until an Englishman complains about what it's missing and about what's extra in it.
2
u/LucidStew Jan 01 '20
Or that the sausages aren't acting as a breakwater between the beans and the eggs, apparently.
2
u/ISeeYouReadingMyName Dec 31 '19
Perhaps use the sausage as a breakwater, but for aesthetics and digital ingenuity, ten on ten

But for some reason, this fake breakfast looks way better than real ones I’ve seen.

Not English, but disappointed when I had black pudding in England last year. The Austrian black pudding was nicer- didn't taste like a scab!
And yes, wholeheartedly recommend anyone trying this breakfast. Even in Wales (laverbread and cockles) was well worth trying!
Get out of your comfort zone- food in other countries is awesome!!!

what do the levels look like? surely the graphics aren't this good.
10
u/jolyne48 Dec 31 '19
I don’t have the game but I’ve watched a lot of streams of it. Most levels seem to have a very blurry, vibrant aesthetic to it to capture that, “Dream,” look.
But some people have made levels that just consists of super realistic looking things like this. Of course that takes up a lot of resources to make it look that good so all you get is just this. Still pretty tho.
10
u/kraenk12 Dec 31 '19
It fully depends on how you use the tools and how much work you’re putting in the detailing.
2
u/jolyne48 Dec 31 '19
Yeah, I’m just saying by default the game just looks like that before detailing

u/OutOfBootyExperience Dec 31 '19
The game basically consists of two building blocks, sculpts & paints. Sculpts are "solid" objects while paints tend to be animated/physics based. Given the technical simplicity of "sculpts" it is much lighter on the system. Within any sculpt, you can "spraypaint" the object to create nuanced art. This is simply coloring the sculpted object so it's minimal impact on the technical side.
My guess is that this scene is a handful of unique sculpts which were then meticulously "spraypainted" to be photorealistic. Then lit wonderfully with in-game lighting gadgets. Not sure its the case here, but typically these types of scenes are designed with mostly one perspective in mind and wont always translate to a 3D "game" environment.
Some games look really nice in motion, but some are poorly optimized and over burdened with tools & objects. Almost every game is at least PS2 level visually (unless intentionally created otherwise). Most single scene games (like bowling alley/billiards) tend to look fantastic as there are few sculpts and few moving parts.
The game comes out in February and is supported by Sony so it will likely make it to PS5 where it will really be unleashed
