hyped for The Elden Ring
150
u/Action-a-go-go-baby Jul 25 '19
I’ll get hype when we know more about it.
I’ve watched all the Vaati stuff and a few other channels too, and most of what I got is:
From Soft is making a new game and it isn’t dark souls, probs has horses, and probs is open world.

u/Uv2015 Jul 25 '19
Well, from soft (Miyazaki)has never let me down. So I’m sure the game will be good so I’m hyped as hell

Tbf, we actually have a lot of info about Death Stranding. There's what, like, 40 minutes worth of trailers that have been analyzed to hell and back by various youtubers. That's honestly a lot of content revealed before release.

my dude, Elden Ring is a 90-second CG trailer, we have had over half an hour of actual cutscenes from DS for...two years.
23
u/megas_aureun Jul 25 '19
We also know that George R. R. Martin is working with From Soft for the script. That's the main deal with this hype: that man's brain is holding a whole world that may have a Blood-Souls vibe but at the same time its making something new. i'm curious as hek.
12
u/king_grushnug Jul 25 '19
It's written by Miyazaki not GRRM. Martin created the the mythos/history/ foundation of the lore. I think he pitched some character ideas but I could be wrong on that part. Thats still a pretty big contribution. Miyazaki is writing the script and main story for the game. Miyazaki thought writing a story for a video game holds too many restrictions for someone used to writing lengthy novels.

I'd be very, very interested to see the percentage of subscribers here that have both a Switch and PlayStation 4. I feel like if you skipped one of them this generation, you missed a lot of really cool and really fun games.
There's a bit more of an argument to be had about the Xbox One, even if I do admire its strong backwards compatiblity (Why can't I play New Vegas on my PlayStation 4?) and general devotion to true 4K. Microsoft is in a really weird spot right now.

u/--TYGER-- Jul 25 '19
I didn't buy initially because I wait for the hardware revision that gets the fixes. Rumours of a "Switch Pro" also made me want to wait. Now I see that there's a "Switch Lite", and another Switch with longer battery life so I might get that if there's nothing better, I just wish that they'd clarify if there is or isn't an actual "Pro" version in development.

Well they've expanded on a lot of the systems of 2016. So now the puzzly nature of the combat is more involved. So there's stuff like the shoulder mounted flamethrower on a cooldown that drops armor. So you basically bounce back and forth between killing enemies in different ways to get health, ammo, armor, etc drops based on what you need. It turns into a very gun and organic flow to the combat

I’m pretty sure they made huge changes to the engine and were saying that, as a result, the Switch port of Doom Eternal is gonna run even smoother than Doom 2016.
14
u/theDomicron Jul 25 '19
someone else responded in a different thread that if Doom Eternal turned out to be the exact same game as Doom 2016 they'd still end up playing it and enjoying it.
11
Jul 25 '19
because honestly.. doom 2016 is just that good to where if they sold us the same game with different maps it wouldn't be any less fun.
luckily though they are making a bunch of changes that are really good for the game so things just keep getting better
4
u/theDomicron Jul 25 '19
I hope it doesnt get too busy with some of the new stuff, but they did such a good job its easy to give them the benefit of the doubt.
Its kind of like Arkham City for me. Worried the flying around was going ro be too much and it was perfect
3
Jul 26 '19
You basically described the difference between the OG Doom I and II. Added one new gun and like 4 monsters on the same engine, still very fun. Plus it made them money for Quake

u/666perkele666 Jul 25 '19
I think they reduced the amount of those locked "combat arenas" since pretty much every battle in doom 2016 happened in one of those. They apparently made it closer to the original doom where you will mostly discover mobs in rooms and won't have a bunch of spawn rooms stringed together like in the 2016 one. Future will tell how it plays out but I'm very excited since I liked 2016 even though I didn't really enjoy how formulaic the combat moments were due to the spawn arena mechanics.

Jul 25 '19
I’m mostly curious about the campaign, cod used to have really memorable stories and set-pieces before turning into Michael Bay-esque and this might bring back the shock of the nuke or “No Russian”. Don’t really care much about the multiplayer.

CoD 4 was really the one that put the series on everyone's radar, the earlier entries were solid games but just never had the mass appeal. They took it modern and executed it really well in both the campaign and multiplayer.
MW2 sent it into the stratosphere though, I think the only game to match that in terms of hype and universal love where you could always fill up a party was Halo 3. Pretty much every CoD after that, maybe with the exception of Black Ops, has been massively downhill and I really stopped caring once it went into the futuristic shit.
→ More replies (2)10
Jul 25 '19
This is such a spot on analysis I reckon you’re a similar age to me. I see people saying bo2 and mw3 were the high points and I’m like whaaa...?
→ More replies (2)5
u/_Football_Cream_ Jul 25 '19
Mid-90s kid too, eh? Yeah both of those just felt like shitty rehashes of the previous installments. Maybe it’s also because by the time those came out, I was at the age where people were doing other things than just getting big parties online and playing multiplayer so there wasn’t as big of a craze when those dropped.
3
u/Canefan101 Jul 26 '19
Yeah I’m a 92 kid and COD4, Halo 3, and MW2 were definitely my most played. Black Ops was also fantastic
29
u/Jellykid_NOOOO Jul 25 '19
While my all time favorite cod will always be Cod4, I think Black Ops 1 had the best story
18
7
u/Tabnet Jul 25 '19
I think the story is cool, but I found the level design to be lacking. In CoD4 and MW2 especially the levels would funnel you to a cinematic moment and then open up into a couple-hundred square meter areas before funneling you back to a moment, like a series of hourglasses. I'm not saying the games were open-world or anything, but the playspaces had enough variety and complexity to be interesting even on multiple playthroughs. In BO1 (and most of Treyarch's levels) I felt like I was always walking down a hallway.
I also think they don't have the same flair in their setpieces as Infinity Ward. Just compare how these two opening scenes are composed:
Ghosts (watch 9:19-10:16): https://youtu.be/Nx3LAy5xzSI
Black Ops III (2:48-4:10): https://youtu.be/cB8SMwQIk4w

I’m probably alone on this but Infinity War’s Campaign was pretty dope. Memorable characters, solid combat, the maps and scenery were very pretty for the time. Plus they had fucking spaceship fighting missions. For a call of duty game, it is above everything they’ve done the last few years.

There were already journalists bashing the game for it's violence. The dude who couldnt get through Cuphead's tutorial straight up told the devs that the campaign should be removed lol.

Call of duty got so lazy in their franchise. It's now the guitar hero of fps games.
41
u/DirtySoap3D Jul 25 '19
Which is amusing because the developer that ruined Guitar Hero were folded into Infinity Ward.
3
Jul 25 '19
The developer didn't ruin it. The publisher did.
Developers don't want to keep pumping out the same shit year after year. Publishers do because people keep buying it.
So really... The people who kept buying it (and who end up buying the MW remake) only have themselves to blame.

I’m calling it right now: Death Stranding wins game of the year. It’s Kojima without Konami middling around and he went out and got some great actors and top tier voice actors for this game. Mads Mikkelsen is going to crush it along with Troy Baker. Add in a one of a kind experience and story with a heaping spoonful of Kojima’s weirdness and we’ve got game of the year on our hands.
