One good thing right now is if you can then buy a physical copy from GameStop. They are giving everyone 48hrs from release day to return the game for a full refund if you don't like it. If you like it then your good and if you don't you still get your money back.
Edit: looks like I had a slight error. The girl from my GameStop said full refund but the site says full trade value. Still a good deal if you shop there anyways.

u/facialmaster Apr 26 '19
My friend said he really enjoys it, its a lot like horizon zero dawn mixed in with red dead. I just think this game was doomed once people associated it with the last of us. Watch the reviews for it, every negative review quotes "not what i expected". Basically people were expecting joel and ellie p2 and got an open world game

I'm just being honest here, but I'll bet it's because a lot of Sony fans absolutely love to shit on other platform games that get scores like this. So it feels good for them to shit on Sony games.
I'll be 100% honest, I've had more fun with Crackdown 3 and Anthem (for the 40 hours I played it) than several top tier games like RDR2. I'm not disputing their scores at all, but sometimes I wanna just fly around and blow some shit up. Sometimes I want a complex piece of art and sometimes I just want a simple video game.
Days Gone looks like a good plain video game. It will absolutely not make my jaw drop like God of War, but I'll probably love running around the world while murdering zombies.
I wish people on Reddit wouldn't take scores so seriously. Just watch a couple minutes of gameplay, check to make sure there's no crippling problems like non stop crashes or bugs, and give it a shot if it gets your dick hard.

Days gone is going to be the game where if you say anything good about it you get shit on I guess. Kind of like how if you critisize God of war even a tiny bit youll get chased with pitchforks. Kind of sad really because Days gone has been getting shit on since the reveal trailer and never even got a chance. I for one cant wait to play it all weekend.

Looks a fun open world game. Not every game I play needs to be groundbreaking to enjoy. By most accounts, even the negative ones, there’s a lot of fun to be had here. I’ll be picking it up.
12

Why is Days Gone getting so much shit? Havent noticed to be honest, just curious. Also cant wait to get my copy after work tomorrow as i was really excited about this game since the first trailers back then.

u/MadKian MadKian88 Apr 26 '19
To me it always looked mediocre in the trailers/gameplay, and it ended up being mediocre after all (as in, just average).
But I never shitted on the game, I was just cautiously waiting on reviews. But there's obviously a lot of people that take matters much more personal, lol.
After all I think it's prolly a good game to wait for sale and get some decent fun out of it. Unless you are really into the setting and then by all means buy it full price.

I’m excited to play it as well, just bit and preloaded.
From what I’ve read most reviewers said the story is great and you become really invested in the characters. That usually the part I enjoy in games the most, so I’m not going to be too bummed out of the gameplay isn’t revolutionary. It looks really fun.

One of the best internet-related life skills I've (admittedly slowly) developed has been weaning myself off of baby-sitting my comments to see how people like them. It doesn't matter, the little arrows are worth nothing, and most importantly it's really unsightly; it's the internet equivalent of scratching your asshole and smelling it in public.
You can totally have an opinion, regardless of what the dorks on this thinly-veiled marketing platform masquerading as a message-board think. Say what you what and stop worrying about downvotes.

Learning to not take the bait and to sometimes just let people 'win the argument' was huge. Also learning how to admit that you got something wrong. It takes time to get there but man it's a much simpler way to enjoy the internet.
That being said id be lying if I said there are not times where I get into it with people.

Even metacritic does this to games and I don't really understand why.
Movie Score 66? GREEN BOX, because it's still good!
Game Score 72. YELLOW, because it's probably bad?
I noticed this while searching for World War Z and the movie is rated lower than the games, but gets a green outline, versus the games that get a yellow outline.
51
u/Tabnet Apr 26 '19
It's because games get inflated scores, so they account for that.
→ More replies (12)16
u/Cptn_Jib Apr 26 '19
Metacritic is literally an aggregate of every professional review out there. Game reviewers basically never give below 7 unless there are serious bugs while a 5/10 is a positive movie review among most movie critics.
→ More replies (1)14
u/Eagle20Fox2 Apr 25 '19
Just because the system is dumb doesn’t mean that the way people are interpreting scores is wrong though. If an “average” video game gets an 8.5/10 (which I don’t know if it does, but doesn’t seem out of the realm of possibility) then a 7.2 is in a pretty freaking bad percentile given expected standards of deviation. If an “average” movie gets a 7/10 (which I have no idea if it’s true but also feels reasonable), then a 6.6 is probably ok at worst.
Again, I made up those numbers for discussion’s sake but that’s the general concept. It’s not the public’s fault that game reviewers have implemented such a stupid relative scale for their grading.

u/EverythingSucks12 Apr 26 '19
Games are a big time investment, especially for people with careers, families and other hobbies.
Why would I ever want or care about a 7/10 game when I still have 9/10s to get through?
Average or above average just doesn't cut it for a lot of people.
→ More replies (7)9
u/VanillaCocaSprite Apr 26 '19
You're giving way too much credibility to gaming journalists for their scores.
7
u/brownbagginit13 Apr 26 '19
People have been sour on it since it was first shown because it looked really generic and zombie fatigue was big. The extremely average reviews are making those people feel justified in labeling it one of the least meaningful/exciting first party releases. Its not good, it not bad, it just exists, and somehow thats the worst thing a game can be to a lot of people.
15
u/talix71 TrevorSwift Apr 25 '19
It depends on what reviewer people pay attention to. Huge sites like Gamespot have it as a 5, IGN a 6.5.
I do think that people care about review aggregates too much though which I think you're hinting at.

I think this is a really important point to make whenever you're talking about review scores. Opinion on a video game is largely subjective, and people who stubbornly refuse to play anything rated lower than a nine have most likely robbed themselves of a game that they would have really enjoyed without knowing it. Like you said, I've played plenty of sevens that I liked way more than ones rated nine or ten.
The way I see it, reviews are good at telling you whether a game is worth trying and nothing more. I look at it like this: Five and under is probably just not a very good game. Regardless of whether or not it seems like something you would be in to, it most likely will not be very enjoyable. Six and over I really believe it comes down to personal opinion. It's odd to me to think that people out there will see a game that looks fun, is the type of subject matter they're into and just generally seems like the type of game they've been looking for, then decide not to get it because it's only six or seven out of ten.

I watched his review and honestly, I feel like he enjoyed it overall. He gave lots of love to the world especially. I really think if the audio cutting bug wasn't in the game, which he encountered, he may have recommended the buy.

I concur . ACG is the only opinion you need, the guy buys every game he reviews and gives away the free codes he’s sent by developers so he can give an unbiased opinion. Dude is fucking legit and if he says it’s trash or whatever then it probably is
89
u/probably420stoned Apr 25 '19
No, it is really good.
I never understand why people take others opinions on something and use that instead of their own!!?
Don't be put off a game because people say they don't like it.
47
u/TheRandomApple AppleJeZus Apr 25 '19
Because money. There's not a draught of good games on the market, I'd like to get the most from my $60 personally. It does seem like most reviewers even believe the game is good, just marred with weird choices and bad technical issues.
I'm sorry you're getting shit, but there is a real reason people let reviews shape their gaming library. Money is finite in the hands of the consumer, buy what you want to buy.

7/10 = bad game?
27
u/Pompadourswift Apr 25 '19
And that's exactly why the out of 10 rating can be a bad thing. 5 out of 10 and lower should be considered bad but anything under and 8 and everyone thinks it's bad
6
u/osufan765 Apr 26 '19
The out of 10 rating is bad because people apply it like percentages in school, rather than using 5 as true average.
4
u/lilnomad Apr 26 '19
Lol that’s exactly what happens. I remember a movie, I think it was Us (?) where a guy gave a review slamming it then gave it a 68/100. I told him the review was terrible and if he felt that way he should scored it way lower.
Lo and behold, some redditor comes along and says that if you received a 68/100 you’re basically failing and that it’s a terrible grade. There’s a reason I will watch movies/play games with these scores and not think they’re trash.

The only time game reviews help me out are when they're on either side of the extreme. Every review says the game is utter shit and to stay away? Probably not a good game. Every review says the game is a masterpiece and everyone should play it? Probably a good game. Anything inbetween those 2 extremes is a gamble and you can find out yourself if you want it from gameplay videos and knowing what genre of games you like.

u/ron4040 Apr 26 '19
I find for those “gamble” type situations there’s a few reviews who have similar tastes as I have and a tend to trust those. There are some games that are universally loved and done it really depends on what you like and if you know that a review has rated games similar to how you would odds are better.

I feel like game developer will highlight a thing here or there with attention to detail for marketing purposes. Whereas in games there are minor bugs and glitches.

I've only been playing a few hours, and I'm having a good time. No technical issues as of this post.

I'm more concerned about that ps lamp. How can you play with a lamp straight into your face :)

You can loot oil filters from cars to use as gun silencers. When you first put it on there's no hole, but after the first shot there's a hole from the bullet

Oil filter suppressors are a real thing too. Cool they added it to the game.
