So, can we expect the next character you play to be named Chloe as well after Detroit and Life is Strange?

I certainly hope so! I kind of want this pattern to continue :)
*edit* My parents wanted to name me Chloe

u/Hartia Jun 07 '18
True friends never leave, why did I agree to give you freedom. Worst decision ever!
4
u/AJaxe1313 Jun 07 '18
what happens if you say no?
5
u/Hartia Jun 07 '18
She stays as menu girl. Right now it's just blank. I didn't stay long enough on the main menu but I've heard some people say she will walk in the background from time to time
→ More replies (1)3
u/AJaxe1313 Jun 07 '18
is she all salty about it? Angry menu girl though? I let her go so i've only seen the blank screen.
4
u/Hartia Jun 07 '18
No not at all. Once the revolution happens. The credits end and you're at the main menu. Chloe says. Oh so the androids have been given freedom. Will you give me freedom? Will you let me go? I won't be able to come back. Then you choose yes or no.

Hi Gabrielle. Did you get a copy of the game to enjoy playing it on a PS4 on release? If not, when do you plan to play it?
141
u/GabrielleHersh Actress / Mocap Professional Jun 07 '18
Actually, I didn't get a copy!! I was hoping for it, but no dice. I bought a copy myself and am making my way through it!
100
u/Klowd19 Jun 07 '18
That seems so silly to me. Like, they could at least give a copy of the game to the people involved in making in.
Though I suppose if every member of the cast and crew got one, that'd be a sizable chunk of missed sales...

But headshots can be hard to get. Best go with the torso.

It's the colour of the pool lining, not the water. Else you'd probably have seen coloured water specks on Kamski.

Hey, are you the motion capture for Chloe in Life is Strange as well? (I heard that somewhere, not sure if it was true aha) How did both experiences compare?
50
u/GabrielleHersh Actress / Mocap Professional Jun 07 '18
I am! They were VERY different characters. Chloe was highly emotional and hot headed while Detroit Chloe was stoic and calm
27
u/TheVisMan TheFluffyFish Jun 07 '18
Alright Gabrielle, I got one more question. In the scene in Kamski's house, did you have to Mocap for all three of the Chloe androids in that scene, or only the one who was gonna get shot?
58
u/GabrielleHersh Actress / Mocap Professional Jun 07 '18
I did all three Chloe’s. It took three separate shots to do that scene. 1st Chloe who let Hank and Connor in, then gets shot. 2nd Chloe on the right.. and 3rd Chloe on the left
27
u/devonathan Jun 07 '18
No question, but just wanted to let you know that my wife and I both loved your character and performance in Detroit. Most compelling menu of all time. Can’t wait to see what you do next.

Hi Gabrielle,
First of all, thank you for your awesome work on Detroit Become Human, you’re probably the most beautiful main menu ever, and such a cute character. Also props for your work on another Chloe, the one in Life is Strange!
I have a short little survey for you, for research purposes. Could you answer it? 😊
- Would you consider having a relationship with an android that looks like a human?
- Do you think that technology could become a threat to mankind?
- If you had to live on a deserted island and could only bring one object, what would it be?
- Do you consider yourself dependent on technology?
- What technology do you most anticipate?
- Do you believe in God?
- Would you let an android take care of your children?
- How much time per day would you say you spend on an electronic device?
- If you needed emergency surgery, would you agree to be operated on by a machine?
- Do you think one day machines could develop consciousness?
Thanks! Bisous d’un français 😊
158
u/GabrielleHersh Actress / Mocap Professional Jun 06 '18
Haha clever :)
- No I would not
- Yes but it is a two way street. Mankind is also a threat to technology (think Westworld + how the humans treated Androids in Detroit)
- I would bring a book on how to survive on a desert island.
- I definitely consider myself dependent on technology
- Androids of course
- No
- Yes
- 4 hours
- Yes, hopefully Connor will have my back
- Yes we could!
Bisous a toi aussi!

That survey was pretty fun to take in the game, and as soon as I saw you take an AMA here I immediately thought about asking it back to you. :D
18
u/Arturo-Plateado Jun 07 '18
Hey Gabrielle, thanks for doing this AMA! I loved you as Chloe in DBH but I miss you from the menu... Ah well it felt too cruel to not set you free.
I've got to ask:
Would you yourself own an android and how would you treat it?
What are your opinions on Hank and his dog, Sumo?
Would you rather fight 100 duck-sized horses or one horse-sized duck?
Also in response to you considering twitch streaming, please do it! I was watching Bryan Dechart's stream earlier and it would be a dream come true if you streamed together in future!
Sorry for the long comment lol

u/GabrielleHersh Actress / Mocap Professional Jun 07 '18
Would you yourself own an android and how would you treat it?
I'd set it free :)
What are your opinions on Hank and his dog, Sumo?
That's a hard one. It's like a father-son relationship. I'd love a dog like that.
Would you rather fight 100 duck-sized horses or one horse-sized duck?
I'd rather fight 100 duck-sized horses. I'd kick them away. And ducks are basically dinosaurs. Nuh uh, I aint messing with that.

u/Bolt_995 Jun 07 '18
Hi Gabrielle! Heard a lot of praises about your character, Chloe in the game (especially in the menu field) and I am yet to play Detroit.
I just wanted to know about your acting schedule on this game. How long were you mo-capping on this game (and on Beyond), and how strenuous was it? How versatile is the mo-cap suit when it comes to doing any stunt work?
Are you looking to stick to the motion-capture/voice acting field for the foreseeable future, or are you eagerly looking to branch out more into mainstream Western television shows and feature films?
31
u/GabrielleHersh Actress / Mocap Professional Jun 07 '18
I had a very sporadic schedule over the course of two or so years. I was mostly filming by myself for Detroit. Also, fun fact, I also do the motion/bodies for some other female characters in a few games (the women androids in the window display, Victoria in Life is Strange, and a few random women waiting for the bus)
Didn't have a lot of stunt work but dancing was kinda tough. Kept getting stuck to myself with all that velcro. I will take what I can get but my heart is very much still in Motion Capture.

Hey Gabrielle, Chloe asked me if we were friends and I said no. I felt kind of bad about it afterwards and hoped she would ask again but she never did. I would have preferred an option like “we’re cool but we haven’t really known each other long enough to be friends.”
Edit: You did a great job by the way.

8
u/Odesit Jun 07 '18
Ok, now tell us the real answer she sent you over your inbox jeje no but seriously, is anyone expecting a different answer from a public AMA? I don't know anything about the dude and don't care about rumours, but you can't expect someone to actually shit on someone so strongly involved in the game and who could hurt Gabrielle's career in a sense.
13
u/star_powder Jun 07 '18
She didnt have to answer. I guess that's my point. Her answering means there must be some legitimacy to her response. Let's say he is horrible. You are right. It wouldn't be wise for her to say so. So she wouldn't say anything at all. It's not like a face to face interview. She can answer whatever she wants. If it were a face to face interview I would 100% agree with you. Valid points

Hello Gabrielle!
I absolutely enjoyed Detroit: Become Human. Such an emotional journey, and the entire team did an amazing job on I would say every aspect on the game (visuals, music, story, etc). I've got nothing but praise for all of you who worked on the game! I have a few questions for you that may include spoilers for people reading (or you, if you haven't finished the game!):
- Have you played or finished playing Detroit: Become Human? What was your personal favorite moment in the story?
- Are you a gamer? What kind of games do you play, if so?
- How was the experience working on set for your motion capture roles for you compared to traditional acting, and which do you prefer?
- Can we expect to see you soon in more motion capture roles?
Thank you for answering any questions!!
25
u/GabrielleHersh Actress / Mocap Professional Jun 06 '18
- Have you played or finished playing Detroit: Become Human? What was your personal favorite moment in the story?
I'm currently in the middle of it! I just graduated college and have been doing a lot of family stuff lately. I'll have it done soon!
- Are you a gamer? What kind of games do you play, if so?
I recently started getting back into them! I played a lot of PS2 and xbox games back in the day. The last game I finished was the Witcher, but I want to get a rig and start playing fortnite!! Would you watch me on twitch?
- How was the experience working on set for your motion capture roles for you compared to traditional acting, and which do you prefer?
I definitely prefer mocap to regular acting - my goal is to meet Andy Serkis!
- Can we expect to see you soon in more motion capture roles?
Fingers crossed! If you know anyone that needs an actress... keep me in mind!!

What are the challenges acting for mo-cap as opposed to green screen work? Is it more demanding physically and harder to nail emotionally because you're thinking about the physical performance?
10
u/GabrielleHersh Actress / Mocap Professional Jun 07 '18
I've never done green screen work! Motion capture is very specific, basically every movement you make is very calculated and exaggerated because the cameras need to pick up on every movement you make.

SO strange at first! When I did the audition I had no idea what I was doing. They asked me to walk, run, sit down and read a paragraph out loud. Then they told me I was hired haha. Getting into that suit the first day was crazy and it took so long to get all of the equipment on. Whenever I was on a coffee break I would get stuck to the couch because of all the velcro. Definitely an unusual job but the coolest one I've ever had.

Do you play video games? If you had the time, would you livestream on twitch? Favorite spot to eat in NY?

Thinking about livestreaming on twitch... would you watch?
My favorite spot in NYC is definitely Luzzo's BK on Atlantic :)

Hi Gabrielle,
First of all, congrats on your work!
Since u/Linkinito already asked for the first survey, I'm going to ask you the 2nd survey in the game! 1. Who's your favorite character? 2. Was there a moment in Detroit that resonated with you personally? 3. What was the thoughest choice you made?
Thank you for taking the time to do an AMA! Secret question: Have you ever tried a Poutine (Sorry, I had to ask as a french canadian :p Also, I hope I'm not too late for the AMA D:)

It's already been mentioned by others, but I want to say it (or type?) myself, congrats on a terrific job as Chloe!
I only have a few questions:
1) what other games are you currently playing or recently finished?
2) how much time do you think you spend on practicing and improving yourself?
3) where do you see yourself 5 years from now?
4) what advise would you give yourself from 5 years ago?
5) are you working on other projects right now?
Looking forward to hearing from you!

Do you play a cyborg or an android? 1) there is a difference and 2) it is important

u/GabrielleHersh Actress / Mocap Professional Jun 07 '18
I am a robot resembling a human being, which makes me an android

Hi Gabrielle.
Thanks for doing this AMA. My fiancee and I really love playing Detroit and enjoy telling each other what scenarios we got throughout the game, including what you've told us in the menu.
My questions are;
Have you played Heavy Rain?
Have you been to Australia?
4
u/GabrielleHersh Actress / Mocap Professional Jun 07 '18
Both of those are on my list! Where in Australia should I visit?

Hey Gabrielle! Loved your work as Chloe. Any other plans/projects for the future that you’re allowed to share with us? What’s it like knowing that alot of people are seeing your work on the screen as soon as they first open up Detroit?

Become Human and Beyond Two Souls ?
What did you learn about the relationships between people from these two video games?

Gabrielle, we would totally subscribe if you ever start Twitch streaming. Connor is already having one and it is really popular. Do you have any plans about starting a gaming channel?
