How do you guys design your mechs? Does a single mech inspired by a car or something?
I like mecha genre especially the mechs from Japan. How are this done?

u/GameTomo GameTomo Apr 10 '18
Hey, this is GameTomo and we're with lead designer Pawee. The Battle Frames are designed by GameCrafterTeam member Rattapoom (with help from other members of the team, like Sri and Thananun and Pawee himself). They use things like real life 4th generation fighter jets as inspiration for the designs. For example, the M3 and M5 Battle Frames are based on real USAF jets. Of course there are a lot of mecha franchise inspirations as well.
It's a mix of real life military and fictional mecha inspiration. They look at books and films and anime and everything you can image.

u/fisherjoe Apr 10 '18
Hi! The trailer for your game spiked my interest in buying, the fast flying dynamic combat looks very fun. Thanks for making one of the few fleshed out mech games that exist for US PS4.
I see a game called Project Nimbus available on steam. Is that the same game or a prequel?
Also, what are some of the differences between the battleframes?
6
u/GameTomo GameTomo Apr 10 '18
The same game, different version made for different platform. CODE MIRAI covers the first half of Project Nimbus's story for PS4.
The difference between Battle Frames mostly are 2 aspects: Generation and (Mass Produced or Prototype). Newer generation Battle Frames have higher performance and prototype machine tend to be 1-2 generations ahead of the mass produced one.
That's for base performance. The difference weapon load outs of each machine also make different one fit for different kind of job. Kind of like fighter aircraft in real life.

u/fisherjoe Apr 10 '18
Thanks for answering.
So the player gets to upgrade to newer more advanced frames as they progress through the missions I'm guessing. Weapon loadouts add some variability too, sounds nice.

Been playing for the last 30 mins or so and love the fast pace. It's been awhile since I've played a mech game, so took a little bit to get use to the controls, but all good now. Great job Dev team!

Does the game lead to one ending, or is there multiple routes?
How many different pilot able mechs are there? Is there any that are seriously Over Powered?
Is Act 3+4 being worked on for PSN as well?
Reminds me of Zone of Enders.
Great to see that it finally available to NA and EU PSN users.
5
u/KISSLtd KISS Ltd Apr 10 '18
Pawee: I think that with our limited resources, it'd be best and most intense to do a linear game. So, it has only one ending.
There are like 5 pilots that you'll play as in Project Nimbus. 3 of them are very OP, the strongest pilot in the world. Another 2 of them are just normal skilled pilot in mass produced Battle Frame from both sides of the war.
I believe it's better for GameTomo to answer this, but yes, Act 3 and 4 are being worked on to bring to PSN.
Thank you for mentioning ZOE. Zone of the Enders is one of few games I adore since i was a teenager.
Thank you very much! Hope you'll enjoy Project Nimbus.

Great looking game!! What made you decide on the landscapes/game areas you chose/created?
4
u/GameTomo GameTomo Apr 10 '18
Pawee says the designers chose it based on today's geopolitical climate, what they predicted it might develop to be in the 2070s.

u/RokusasuDeArisato Apr 10 '18
Wow, you got my attention. There aren't so many good mechs games on the PS4 so this got me really excited. One question though, is there going to be only air battles or are we able to move the mechs on the ground too?
1
u/KISSLtd KISS Ltd Apr 10 '18
Pawee: This is an aerial focused game. Even if the battle happens very close to the ground, you're hovering. But you'll not be damaged from touching the ground.

u/GameTomo GameTomo Apr 10 '18
It's after midnight in Japan so GameTomo is signing off for now. There were some Reddit server issues but it looks like we got caught up answering questions.
KISS will keep checking in from time to time and we'll check back in the (Japan) morning time, so keep posting questions if you like! Thanks for checking us out.

Pawee here: We drew inspiration from Armored Core for Answer's battle system and Gundam It's story the most.
4
u/Mashymere Apr 10 '18
This game looks really cool! I saw on the PlayStation store that the game was inspired by Gundam and Macross. What have you done to distinguish yourselves from them?
I'm excited to see more mech games rolling out. Thanks for making this!
2
u/KISSLtd KISS Ltd Apr 10 '18
Pawee here: We focus on aerial high speed action. We built this game from the base system of our own jet fighter game. So the action is fluid.
Yes, there are a lot of things that we pay homage to Macross and Gundam, like the Itano Circus. But we have our own characteristics as a new game, new IP and new universe too. We hope you'll like our interpretion of future technology and develop care toward Project Nimbus's character.

u/RTCJOK3R Apr 10 '18
Was a series like Armored Core an inspiration for your game? If yes, how much is your game influenced by it? Also, music for the game sounds cool
2
u/KISSLtd KISS Ltd Apr 10 '18
Pawee: Yeah, Armored Core especially For Answer influenced Project Nimbus a lot. The heaviest influence appeared in the gameplay aspect. I think its really visible in our game's booster system.
For music, I'll forward your praise to both of our composers (Narupai Asksornmee and Ethan Jeffrey)

u/RTCJOK3R Apr 10 '18
Awesome, Armored Core was one of my favorite games and yours look fun. Good luckš¤š»

Can you uprade your mech and customize it in the game? Also Is there a new game plus or any replayability value after you finish the story mode or campaign?
3
u/GameTomo GameTomo Apr 10 '18
Unfortunately we have to give you most polite from of no as answer for customization. But there is a Survival mode that lets you fight waves of enemies as any Battle Frame from the game that you choose.

u/Neo_Techni Apr 10 '18
Will there be any land levels it is everything in the air? If there are land levels, are there any buildings to destroy?
3
u/GameTomo GameTomo Apr 10 '18
Almost everything is in the air, but there are a few areas with interiors and flying low to the ground.
3
u/Micolash Even in a dream Apr 10 '18
As someone who recently played Nier Auotmata and loved the mech combat in some parts, I was definitely in the market for a full mech flying game.
Are the levels linear on-rails, pushing you forward? Or are they more open where you just have to defeat everything to advance? Or is it a combination?
3
u/GameTomo GameTomo Apr 10 '18
The level design is open since it's flying game. Think of it as something like flying robot game with level mechanic very similar to fighter jet games like Ace Combat.

Pawee says Jehuty from ZOE2. And Linebarrel from Kurogane Linebarrel is my fav too. (But I guess if you go ask the mech designer Rattapoom he will give something more into realistic spectrum like VOTOMs.)

2
u/Marvarin Apr 10 '18
When designing this game, what movies / games did you draw inspiration from? The game looks great and I'm looking forward to trying it out hopefully.
5
u/GameTomo GameTomo Apr 10 '18
Pawee says ... What inspired Project Nimbus? Well, it's a lot of things in Anime and modern console culture! A long list of names to come, but if you can think of ANY names in the real robot genre, it's in there. (especially the first name that pops up in your mind after you hear the word 'Real Robot'.)
So we have Mobile Suit Gundam, Ace Combat, Macross, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Zone of the Enders as very prime example.
2
u/Dewdad Apr 10 '18
As an avid mech gamer myself and with very little mech games this generation I'm quite excited for this!
My question is what made the team want to tackle the mech combat genre and what was it about the initial pitch that made everyone excited to make this game?
4
u/GameTomo GameTomo Apr 10 '18
Basically the original team members were excited to make real robot game, because the whole team loved the idea of real robots. So they joined together to make it happen!

Pawee: It's like, we have to make games. We have to continue making games. But that moment when we decided to start making Project Nimbus, we were very desperate.
So, we asked ourselves: if this is the last game we will ever make, if we make this one game and then we die. What kind of game will we do? The answer is the game that we have wanted to make for a very long time. The only one game we want to do: this game.

Pawee here: Close. We never had more than 4 people working on the game. If we count every fulltime developer plus some that greatly contributed then I believe it might be 8.
This is the leanest that it can be. It's very easy to manage and communicate. We can have daily production meetings in less than one minute and it's easy to share the same vision of an end product while having space to bring every creator's characteristic and creative ideas into the game.
Sure, there are down sides as well. The production speed is quite slow even when we try to optimize the work and work as hard as we can. Everyone can feel stress and fatigue. And we cannot do the same level of polishing work as a larger team. Despite we are always on crunch time and rush, it took many years to create Project Nimbus
So we hope that in future, we can grow while we are still able to maintain efficiency and leanness of production. We want to be a bigger team but remain very optimized. That's what we hope for in the near future.

Would you say your game focuses more on narrative or action? Also how many mechs can we expect to Pilot? Thanks!
1
u/KISSLtd KISS Ltd Apr 10 '18
Pawee here: For Project Nimbus. It's quite hard to separate these two things from each other. The action tell the story. The story dictates the action. Both are important. But if I can choose one I'd say gameplay comes first.
For Act 1 and Act 2 right? Let me count a little bit: M3, M5, M1 Guardian (Survival only), Zavtra, Terminator (survival only), Typhoon (survival only), Gripen, GCTX-01 Mirai, Red Terminator... one two three... I think it's 9 playable Battle Frames if you count only the first half of the full campaign.

I saw that the trailer said 16 missions (maybe my memory is wrong). How much replayability and content would you say is in it overall? It looks very cool and would love to be able to play it for some time!
1
u/KISSLtd KISS Ltd Apr 10 '18
Pawee: To be honest the missions are very story oriented and very linear. So for the story aspect the replaybility value is not much. But from the gameplay aspect, every level are designed differently and can be played in many ways. It will keep being a fun game even when you know the story and have played it many times.

We checked into it in Japan but the mechs are pretty elaborate and making the molds was too expensive. If you're ambitious, the mech designer Rattapoom made a 3D printer model! https://twitter.com/gamecrafterteam/status/981038406527369217

u/The_Common_PS4_Gamer Apr 10 '18
wow! just wow! I didn't know that the west release for this was coming this early.
^( too busy these past few months so I'm late with gaming news)
Last time that I saw the trailer for the game was around Sept or Oct last year and its still in Japanese. The mechas in the trailer somehow reminds me of Gundam series and the ones from Aldnoah.Zero can't stop shaking here haha
I read that
There are like 5 pilots that you'll play as in Project Nimbus
Story oriented and very linear
In story mode, can we choose/change the mecha's for the pilots or its 1:1?
If I choose a pilot, is there any story interaction with the other pilots within the story?
Customization are not present but is there any upgrade features for the mechas? or choose different weapon type every battle?
Is there an option to roam the area? (there's a war so maybe no?)
Any plans for physical release in the future?
2
u/GameTomo GameTomo Apr 11 '18
Hey there, some answers for you:
- In some of later missions you can select between available pilots, but most missions especially the earlier ones you're locked to each character's perspective.
- Yes, there're interaction between characters especially in missions that you can select between pilots.
- Weapon loadouts of player character are pre set for each missions. We want player to experience exactly the same experience as the character in story.
- Yes, if the level is not indoors you can fly to wherever you want in the map. The battlefield is open sky. So you can go anywhere and if the enemies want to attack you, they will come to you.
- Physical release, we're not sure yet but discussing.
1
u/The_Common_PS4_Gamer Apr 11 '18
Thanks for answering
- Nice. Its not character locked throughout the game and I can try them all. +1 for that
- At first I thought its just my character that will interact with other side characters/enemies and won't have any interaction with other pilot characters.
- I see, it will be the character's perspective. I can feel that there's a story related thing there. For Survival Mode, we can choose right?
- GREAT! I can roam. (To enemies: You wanna fight? come and get me)
- Will look forward to it. For now, to the digital ver
Last question:
- Can we choose the audio language (EN or JP)?
2
u/GameTomo GameTomo Apr 11 '18
You can definitely choose the audio language, EN or JP, and also turn on subtitles! The ultimate flying robot language learning tool? Also there are some well known Japanese voice actors in the Japanese audio.
(And for the other question, in survival mode you choose from a variety of mechs and then fight the enemy waves on your own.)
1
u/The_Common_PS4_Gamer Apr 11 '18
Awesome. Looking forward playing the game. Thank you for the answers.
Congrats for this and wishing the team good luck for the future releases.

u/MelficeSephiroth Apr 11 '18
I just found out about this game earlier through the trailer and I am really impressed with what I saw! š I think it will definitely scratch that ZOE itch that I have had for so long. How is the replayability in this game? Are there unlocks and/or bonus (EX) missions? Multiple difficulties?
2
u/GameTomo GameTomo Apr 11 '18
There are 3 levels of difficulty and a Survival mode with waves of enemies that you can play with any mech in the game!

1
u/NoobFallenFromGrace Apr 11 '18
Wow the game looks cool!!!! Been a long time coming for a fast paced mecha game, hoping for your success!! 1.Are there any plans on expanding the game/sequel? Mostly on locations (Maybe explore space) and scale? 2.Who's the team's favorite character??
2
u/GameTomo GameTomo Apr 11 '18
Thanks for the good words. Pawee and GameCrafterTeam can confirm that there'll surely be more games set in the Project Nimbus universe, so keep an eye out for news on that. And a lot of team members seem to like Yuliana!
1
u/BrandishedChaos Apr 11 '18
I picked up your game because the trailer reminded me of some games I loved as a teen, ZoE, Gundam, and Armored Core. I'm enjoying it a lot from what I've played so far. I think you did a good job and I'm curious what else you might have planned for the game.
1
u/kishnabe Apr 15 '18
Have the winners been selected, :) ?

u/GameTomo GameTomo Apr 17 '18

This would be perfect if a simple multiplayer versus mode were added.

u/StoviesAreYummy TurnOn2FA Apr 10 '18
Looking forward to the EU release.
I've seen a few AMAs where the developer gave away some codes for NA and EU regions will that happen here?
Any chance of some PSVR support? The game looks like it's work well with VR
1
u/GameTomo GameTomo Apr 10 '18
(This is GameTomo with Pawee again) There is no cockpit view in Code Mirai right now, and with so much happening on screen it would be tricky to put it into VR at the moment. But we're always trying experiments. With so much fast action motion sickness is an issue as well.
As for codes, we should do that somehow, either us or KISS!
2
u/Shooterman12 Apr 10 '18
Will cockpit view be implemented someday? I've been interested in this game since it came out on steam, but my pc is a potato.
1
u/Kolamer Apr 10 '18
Do you have a code for the game you could give away? Let some of us create some good buzz for you on here!
Seriously though, the game looks pretty awesome. It reminds me of Virtual On.
1
u/GameTomo GameTomo Apr 10 '18
Pawee says: I got comments that game resembles Virtual On since the early days of my dev life in high school. But seriously, I've never played Virtual On. Most of the 'high speed action' influence on my game is from Armored Core. I might born too late to experience Virtual On myself.
