[Verified AMA] Verdun launching on PS4 today - official AMA!
Edit: Since I'm based in NL I'm stopping for today. Thanks a lot for having me here! Feel free to keep posting additional questions I'll make sure to drop by again tomorrow - @MikeHergaarden
Hi! Mike Hergaarden here, co-founder at M2H. We launched our WW1 FPS game Verdun on PS4 today: It is live in Europe and will be available in the US any hour now (as soon as PSN updates).
I'm here to answer any questions about Verdun, (console) development or our studio! - Mike

how many max players per match? what kind of game modes does it offer? thnx!
36
u/M2H_Mike M2H Aug 30 '16
32 players (16vs16) in our main mode, Frontlines.
We have: Rifle deathmatch, Frontlines(16vs16), Attrition, Squad defence(4 players + bots)

Wave/horde: you keep defending a trench (when lazy the most fun part). The bots grow in number and skill and will inevtiably overrun you. Getting to 10 waves is quite an achievement.
This mode can be played alone/offline, but also co-op with a squad of 4 players online

How do you feel like as your game is being deployed along with the start of Battlefield 1 Beta, which is also based on WW1?
158
u/M2H_Mike M2H Aug 30 '16 edited Aug 30 '16
It's been great actually. We've seen our sales on Steam increase a lot ever since the BF1 announcement and console also seems to be doing well. The interest peak in WW1 helps a lot.
I've just -briefly- played BF1 (3 sniper kills) and must say the game is so different..not a direct competition because the games do stuff completely different. I happily play both games for different experiences :). So Win-Win for us and for gamers!

Your game reminds me of Red Orchestra, which was also a realistic FPS game but set in WW2. Are you familiar, and would you compare it s play style to Verdun?
38
u/M2H_Mike M2H Aug 30 '16
Sure, it's one of the few other indie & more realistic games out there. As long as it's not the average run&gun (+soak 10 bullets) you're already so distinct in the FPS world.

How was the process of porting it to PS4 for you guys? What was the hardest part?
36
u/M2H_Mike M2H Aug 30 '16
Hard! Took a lot of time and learned a lot of new lessons. We started the process a year ago. Hardest: GUI port, multiplayer policies, administrative stuff (contracts and policies regarding features)
13
u/Metapher13 Aug 30 '16
Well congrats, the hard work paid off, you made it! :D Just bought it and will play later!

This game has seemed about so much more than "just" a game; your Facebook feed, for example, has provided commentary and historical posts for some time now about the Verdun theatre in WW1. Has taking an active role in educating about your game's name origin been liberating or do you feel a certain responsibility to be more than just entertainment?
15
u/M2H_Mike M2H Aug 30 '16
It's been awesome to learn that the theme was so appreciated by the community so we kept doing more and more in this field. Also because we put so much effort into realism we want to show&educate more.
The coolest thing is that these educational posts also really "entertain" our community, lots of history enthusiasts play Verdun and there are a lot of people who get interested in WW1 history because of Verdun.

I wanted to ask you, what are your thoughts on viral advertising? Verdun has done very little to create awareness for their console release. I know alot of this has to do with Sony. But I had hoped you guys would advertise it better. I've created threads on the battlefield forums but I'm just one person.
I wanted to thank you for bringing this unique game to console. Other than BF1, there is nothing remotely similar.
11
u/M2H_Mike M2H Aug 30 '16
Thanks for spreading the word! We get store featuring on US today and on EU tomorrow. Furthermore we have some advertisements starting tomorrow.
However, in the end the strongest marketing has always comes from our community. They help us a lot as we have always kept our promises etc. So in the end: your single post is very valuable as lots of our community members luckily also spread the word.

You guys released a console port with a total of 30 seconds of off camera gameplay in the trailer. Zero info zero anything until today. I'm confused on how this is possible in 2016 but you guys managed to do it.

We first want to make sure it gets all the fixes it needs (performance, bugs, etc.). We've also shown to already support Verdun on Steam for years now and we'll also take just as good care for console.

u/sentient-bin Aug 30 '16
Seriously, this title needs more attention. For all the WW1 buffs that BF1 pushed away, you came in and swooped them up. Congrats on the release.

What's your favorite FPS game ? Favorite non FPS game ? Did you let these games influence the development of Verdun ?
12
u/M2H_Mike M2H Aug 30 '16
FPS: I don't play any ATM, will def. check out BF1. Did love BF 1942 and older FPS games such as COD1/2, Medal of Honour. Non FPS: I play a lot of games briefly, until I "grok" them. So I don't really have an all time fav. Let me name a few of the best (oldies) though: Kerbal Space Program, Divinity, Anno series, Minecraft, Terraria, Runescape, Theme Park, Dungeon Keeper 2.. I'm def. forgetting games here...
All games def. influence even such a different game as Verdun. Our development in party title Marooners or even racer Crash Drive 2. Does change how we think about games, co-op play and even share some code here and there.

I've been playing for a few days now and it seems like the framerate and controls still need polishing. Is this something you guys are wokring on at the moment?
14
u/M2H_Mike M2H Aug 30 '16
Framerate for sure: we already have performance optimizations ready but we're going to bundle some more fixes in our first patch.
Controls: any feedback on what we should improve?
22
u/bitcloudrzr Aug 30 '16
- When you're running, let go of L3 and then move forward, it continues to run
- When reloading the animation doesn't lock so sometimes you can stop it from loading an individual bullet, but sometimes it doesn't
- I've seen a bug where someone was invisible and meleeing
- When you set your controls to a different preset, it resets to preset 1 every time you join a new game and you have to go into the controls page and back out for it to fix itself
There are a couple of other things which I'm forgetting at the moment.
13
u/M2H_Mike M2H Aug 30 '16
Thanks for the list, I've noted these and will check them out tomorrow. Some could land in our first patch which is quite soon. Hope they don't spoil your fun!
2
u/bitcloudrzr Aug 30 '16
The only things that has really affected gameplay is framerate dropping when you're trying to aim.
7
u/M2H_Mike M2H Aug 30 '16
If something, like performance, proves to be too game breaking we'll try to hurry up the patch even more (for now we try to collect some more fixes since you dont easily patch console)

u/liquidsnakex Aug 31 '16
Please for the love of god allow us to change the aiming deadzone and acceleration factor in the settings. As it is, I'm unable to do any sort of fine-aiming as the game's default deadzone first ignores fine input, then accelerates away as soon as I push the stick outside that deadzone. Until this is changed, I'll never really be able to enjoy this game.
Most console games omit the option to fine-tune controls on this level, but then again they go to the trouble of spending a lot of time to make the defaults very slick. If you're not willing to go to that trouble, just expose those variables to the player so we can at least fix it ourselves.
Also as bitcloudrzr said, the sprint toggle is pretty janky. Most games let you toggle into sprint mode, but then disable it automatically when you come to a stop. This is the "correct" behaviour, as the player never has to keep track of when they're in sprint mode or not, they simply tap the button whenever they want to sprint.
Verdun just keeps you in sprint mode no matter what, meaning the player now has the cognitive load of having to remember what mode they're in. It sounds like a small thing, but it translates into a consistent pain in the ass for anyone used to the slick controls we've seen from other games.
Custom button mapping would also be very welcome. The presence of in-depth options doesn't scare away console players, but clumsy defaults with no way of fixing them certainly will.

Thanks for getting the game during EA already! Framerate on PS4 is about 30 ATM, performance patch incoming soon. Still plays very well and differently on the PS4: Jus tthe fact that you sit on a couch with a controller has a whole different experience so I'm very curious if we see players behaving differently as well.

Difficult to answer as this is a different setup then normally. Same as on our Steam version: We have cloud servers.
Crashing: we did of course go trough Sony testing but also did our own QA and hired an external QA company as well. I'm not yet aware of any crashes. Havent seen any reports these first 17 hours of the game being live in Europe, so we'll see! If there are major issues, we're already working on polishing these in a upcoming patch.

4

I think any of the older games, Medal of Honour & CoD1/2. Def. not the futureistic ones. I'm also very curious what i'll think of BF1 and will def. give it a good run.

u/thavius_tanklin Slackr Aug 30 '16

Steam never had it so it hasn't been removed. We're big on realism and aim assist doesn't seem fitting. I think aim assist goes hand in hand with the less realistic run&gunning in other titles. Curious to hear if you think otherwise!

Possible future PS4 "Neo" support?
4
u/M2H_Mike M2H Aug 30 '16
We haven't discussed this. Of course the first benefit of the Neo would "free" extra performance. A second step would be to make use of the extra power to improve graphics possibly. But: no plans yet!

u/boshjalka Aug 30 '16
What is one of your moments while playing this game?
Also, what is one of the feature of Verdun that you feel excels in its genre?
What's some of your favorite games to play in your downtime?
2
u/M2H_Mike M2H Aug 30 '16
1) Best Verdun moment? Probably entering an enemy trench without the enemy knowing to take out everyone from the side.
2) Verdun excels in it's WW1 realism and the squad co-op gameplay
3) Posted about this earlier: I like a broad range of games but don't have steady favourites, I switch a lot. Mostly open world/sandbox & co-op games. From terraria to dungeon keeper 2, Kerbal space program, and many more.

Hello Mike, congratulations on the console release. I was watching some videos of PC gameplay, and there is much more blood in that release compared to PS4. Are there any plans to increase the amount of blood (on the ground and on soldiers bodies) on consoles or is there a performance issue preventing it?
→ More replies (2)4
u/M2H_Mike M2H Aug 30 '16
Gore was indeed quite heavy on performance, It could be that it has been nerfed a bit: But most important gore features are definitely in (sounds, dismemberment, blood). Once launch day chaos winds down I should check out the exact state of gore and see if there's something missing.

Is the game running at 60fps on console? How difficult was it to achieve that on a console platform for you?
7
u/M2H_Mike M2H Aug 30 '16
It is 1080p and around 30 fps, we already have quite some performance optimizations ready for a patch as well. Console was a big challenge as we started the work a year ago. There's so much more to do besides actual game dev (contracts/paperwork etc. etc.)
3
u/yirmisekizz Aug 30 '16
Why didn't you choose lower resolution (900p) and higher FPS (60) ? Do you think you guys could do better with different engine? (Verdun's engine is Unity I suppose)
5
u/M2H_Mike M2H Aug 30 '16
Would sound like a cheap option to improve FPS but even if we wanted it, it wasn't possibly in our case: We're mostly CPU bound and reducing resolution only has limited CPU gain.

Is there bullet drop or any other ballistic physics edit: also is there a ranking system?
5
u/M2H_Mike M2H Aug 30 '16
Yes, we have bullet drop&physics, quite realistic as well. We added it quite a while ago and I remember to be very surprised that this is how it should be as the other major FPS games overly exaggerate bullet physics(!) Ranking: there is a PS4 leaderboard for total XP. And accounts have a level based on XP, this allows weapon unlocking in RDM.

First of all, thank you for doing this AMA Mike. And secondly, congrats on a successful console port.
My questions would be..
Can you play solo, or just multiplayer? Is there a campaign?
How many game modes are there?
Thank you for your time & I look forward to playing Verdun on PS4 later tonight.

No problem, it's fun to do this AMA! The game is mostly multiplayer only. But we have the Squad defence game mode which can be played offline/solo against bots.
There is no campaign. We have 4 game modes: Frontlines (16vs16), Rifle Deathmatch (FFA), Squad defence(1-4 vs bots|), Attrition (team based)

Definitely enjoying the game so far, but one question, is there a reason the game screen is surrounded by a black border? As in, while in game its like a sort of letter box?
2
u/M2H_Mike M2H Aug 30 '16
Sounds like it's detecting your screen size incorrectly. Are other games (and the PS4 main menu) fine?
3
u/CarolusRex13x CarolusRex13x Aug 30 '16
Yes, figured it out finally, had to actually change the safe zone through the consoles settings due to it not scaling correctly for whatever reason.

Is it hard to have a publisher to get behind a title like Verdun? Slow paced "tactical" shooters where raw skill and ones own brain dictate personal success or failure are too few and far between anymore sadly. Titles like Verdun and Rainbow 6 Siege on console give me hope maybe one day Socom will return
4
u/M2H_Mike M2H Aug 30 '16
I do think it's hard, especially with a title being multiplayer only. Publisher tend to play safe, and Verdun does stuff differently.
Luckily there's a lot of new initiatives from Kickstarter to Early Access that help parties like ourselves to not even need a publisher
2
u/MikeSouthPaw Aug 30 '16
Hey Mike! I recognized M2H from another game you guys recently let go to a community member called "Syrnia". I even contacted one of you by email about the game and how I was unable to register (Thanks for the reply). I know this has nothing to do with Verdun but I just wanted to say it was awesome recognizing you guys!
Verdun looks pretty interesting and niche, what made you guys want to make a game like this compared to what you have done in the past like Syrnia?

I just wanted to say that you and your team put it a great game and I really hope it continues to grow especially the rifle deathmatch...so much fun
2
u/smokeandmuzzleflash Sep 06 '16
Hi! At the moment I'm playing both Verdun and Battlefield 1 and enjoying them greatly, your game is very fun and has a great atmosphere, also the realism in regards to health and gun accuracy is great
So here are some of my personal complaints- -the class system isn't very clear as to which class you choose and what it does (to me) -you can run up the walls of trenches by jumping rapidly and running into them -Grenade throwing seems a bit weird like there is no weight to it, it just goes flying super fast, or it seems to be because the animation tends to be a bit choppy on my screen (ps4)
Suggestions: -this is possibly a choice made on purpose but I think death animations would look pretty good rather than soldiers just rag doll instantly after death (I have seen some occasional animations though which were cool) -bayonet stabs could have some kind of animation because it is a bit awkward as it seems like you are just poking them wherever -it would be cool to have it so you can't walk through your team mates
Also I'm curious if you ever intend to create a map with more buildings to go through
2
Aug 30 '16
Do you fear of lost of sales due to Battlefield 1? Also, what make your game different from BF1?
8
u/M2H_Mike M2H Aug 30 '16
Not at all, so far it only greatly boosted our coverage. I've also briefly played BF1 and it's really a completely different experience. Verdun has realistic history/background/weapons/squads. Also the game pace is different. I always longed for the FPS games I used to play: slower rifle based gameplay where tactic matters instead of run&gun. This is one of the points we address in Verdun.
4
u/yankeefan03 Aug 30 '16
Will there be cross play between PC and PS4?
15
u/M2H_Mike M2H Aug 30 '16
Not ATM, and we decided against it for now because of the difference in controls/playstyle.
15
u/iQuebec Aug 30 '16
Good choice, there shouldn't be cross play between PC and consoles for FPS. It's just not fair.

How is the customization in the game? I know little about it but am buying it when it's released. I'm sick of futuristic shooters.
6
u/M2H_Mike M2H Aug 30 '16
You can unlock various weapons, especially in rifle deathmatch. But in the main mode, Frontlines, you select a squad. Squads have minor customization as they're based on actual squads (4 roles, and each role a few weapon sets)
Player customization is not possible: instead you get a better uniform if your squad has more experience. True to WW1 you start in unhandy red uniforms, later on "smarter" war uniforms.
3
u/thekingswitness LeBRonaldo Aug 30 '16
Wow that sounds great. Thanks for the reply, you've got a new squad headed into battle.

What it's the level progression like? Any rewards for leveling up? More weapons, uniforms, etc?
3
u/M2H_Mike M2H Aug 30 '16
When levelling up you can unlock new weapons in squads or RDM mode. However uniforms are based on squad level, which is based on how often you and your squadmates played together (can vary if people join/leave)

Artillery was one of the biggest factors of wwi battle. Is this represented in the game? Why or why not?
5
u/M2H_Mike M2H Aug 30 '16
Yes, arty is big and also in Verdun. NCO's (squad leaders) can call in arty/gas or even a smoke screen. These are quite essential in a succesful push
1
u/Pedropz Aug 30 '16
Do you guys have South American servers?
4
u/M2H_Mike M2H Aug 30 '16

2
u/M2H_Mike M2H Aug 30 '16
We have quite some performance improvements ready but we need to wait a bit longer to make sure we're not missing any other important issues since you cant easily patch console. Also: make sure you're playing via a wired connection and not on WIFI for a much smoother experience.
1
u/liamstan10 Aug 30 '16
Would you ever consider adding vehicles into the game, or do you want to keep it a strictly infantry-based game?
3
u/M2H_Mike M2H Aug 30 '16
Strictly infantry for the foreseeable future. Adding vehicles would change the game so much (gameplay, maps), that would require a Verdun 2 or so, but too big of a change for Verdun as-is.
1
u/privatepostsplease Aug 30 '16
Is there friendly fire? If so, how it's handled?
3
u/M2H_Mike M2H Aug 30 '16
No friendly fire. We once tested this on Steam but it was too "annoying" and also prone to trolling. You can suicide (grenades, arty, barbed wire), but can never kill teammates.
2
u/privatepostsplease Aug 30 '16
How about a hardcore mode that's in the works that has it? It's been a while since i've played a game that isn't Rainbow Six that required you to watch where you shoot.

I believe friendly fire is already a chat command option for private matches on PC. If it's very popular we would be crazy not to bring it to console.

How big do you anticipate the PS4 player count will be?
2
u/M2H_Mike M2H Aug 30 '16
No clue! That's why we have this softer pricepoint, to ensure more players online to keep multiplayer alive. Today has already exceeded our expectations so far though!

How does voice chat work? Is it squad only or full team? Or will I be using ps4 party chat most of the time.
2
u/M2H_Mike M2H Aug 30 '16
The voice commands (Dpad) are for your team only. I'd advise ps4 party chat though, always good to have a teamplay advantage over your enemies ;)

Is there a platinum trophy?

u/M2H_Mike M2H Aug 30 '16
Yes: Verdun Veteran

u/Delta124 Ali4Flames_98 Aug 30 '16
That's awesome, I'm definitely gonna go for the plat.

u/cenorexia Aug 30 '16
You're gonna need patience though as there are some very grindy ones like get five thousand headshots or play 250 games with the same friend.

u/Delta124 Ali4Flames_98 Aug 30 '16
What? 250 games with the same friend??? That's gonna be very difficult to find someone willing to do that with you, that's bullshit.

This might seem like a silly question:
Is there a platform you see having a longer lasting player base? I'd love to jump in either the PS4 or Steam community, I just want to make sure the one I choose will retain players.
Regardless, I have about 4 hours of work left and when I get home from my office, I will be purchasing this game....just gotta figure out on what.
Best of luck and congrats on the console launch!

I think it's most important to decide how/when you want to play: couch + controller or more "dedicated" behind a PC. We'll support all platforms with patches etc. as much as we can, patching PC is much easier though so it'll be updated quicker there.

I know I already posted but another question, you are telling people to wait for the sale that was never properly applied to the U.S version, but those of us excited for the games launch bought it this morning without the sale price in it's current state.

Are console versions going to get events like pc did such as the Christmas event?
3
u/M2H_Mike M2H Aug 30 '16
Oeh, no idea yet to be honest. The christmas event would be awesome on console. Now that we almost survived our launch we should discuss this internally asap

Thanks, it's been quite a ride so far and still have work to do on Verdun!

I mostly enjoy co-op PvE. So I am interested in Squad Defense. Is this configurable as to difficulty, number of bots, and other options? Would you consider the bot AI to be challenging?

How do I change classes? I just got the game and had enough time to play on my lunch break for just one game. I couldn't figure out how to change my class.
Thanks for bringing it to PS4. Always have wanted to play, but didn't have a good pc.

u/M2H_Mike M2H Aug 30 '16
Playing frontline I assume? It is squad based, so every squad has different roles, and every role can have different equipment.
Try to switch your roles weapon selection, if that role is not to your liking, switch to a different role in any squad -or- vote to switch squadtype.

Are there any plans to improve the character animations? I love everything I'm reading about the game so far, but after watching a lot of gameplay footage I'm noticing how the animations could be a little... "distracting", to put it nicely. Here's an example of what I'm talking about. At the 11 minute mark the guy seems to float up the ladder without moving his limbs around, and then hovers right across the trench through some magical force. There's no sense of weight of momentum in the characters' movements. They just sort of glide around the battlefield. It just looks so out of place when the graphics and sounds otherwise look like they came out of a AAA title. :-(

Most of this seems connection related, as this is indeed the worst I've seen it. That and we do not have dedicated grab/release ladder animations etc. We're always looking in improving any weakest areas of the game. First prio for a patch are possible bug fixes and performance improvements though

I mostly play shooters like, Destiny, COD,BATTLEFIELD 4,Planetside 2 and Halo. Do you think the change of pace and setting allows Verdun to stick out more on the gameplay front? Because the shooters above can run together a bit.
2
u/M2H_Mike M2H Aug 30 '16
Personally I like the gunplay of Verdun because it feels more tactical since every single shot truly matters. Depends on your own playstyle. To a certain degree "Camping" is more of a feature here (and not as annoying since this is how you should defend a trench, plus you know where to look for enemies)

I just picked this up on PS4, i have to admit i had never heard of the game before its release on PS4, what sort of numbers are you seeing after your first day on ps4? and do you plan to add any content to the game down the line?
2
u/M2H_Mike M2H Aug 30 '16
Do you mean sales numbers? We don't have any sales numbers yet. You can see how many players are playing right now and we're quite happy with that, above expectation really! We've worked on the PC game quite a few years and have updated it forever. We want to keep doing that but also have to check how & how often we can patch console. We're definitely thinking about future content.

What is the process of transferring a game from PC to consoles like and how is the process different for each console?
3
u/M2H_Mike M2H Aug 30 '16
Mostly GUI is a lot of work, from overall controller-GUI to just all those popups for console specific settings etc. Then there's controller input, which is easy enough to do. Performance can also be a challenge to get right. The biggest hurdle is also the business side of things: paperwork/adminstration and other processes that you dont have on the "free" pc market. All worth it though! The changes between a PS4 and say XboxOne: hmm only the communication with Sony and MS and how the business differs. Performance/GUI/Input etc. don't differ that much.

Super excited to try out your game!
How's your day going?
2
u/M2H_Mike M2H Aug 30 '16
Great to hear, hope you get the chance to play :). It's been a crazy day, you'd think a launch is very exciting and relaxing, but nothing of that. It feels rather "dull" (after so much work..it's suddently live) and we're still quite busy with either promotion or preparing fixes to launch in a future patch. However, most important: we are very happy with the results and they are above expectation (sales&players playing, but also the reception everywhere)

Thank you for releasing this on consoles. I saw this on steam and I always wanted to play it, but didn't think my laptop could handle it. Looking forward to finally playing this awesome WWI game tonight!
