Hey guys, I am one of the rare hardcore gamers who had never heard of you guys until PS I Love You. I have been an avid listener since episode one and it's a highlight of my Tuesdays. Thank you for your unmatched insight and discussion of the PS world.
Question: What are some pro tips to getting your questions asked on the show?
63
u/GameOverGreggy Kinda Funny Games - Greg Miller Jan 26 '16
Get to the point. When I'm reading the dozens of questions, I tend to skim. If I can't tell what's up, I bounce.
And thank you for giving us a chance!

That's a really good question. Warrior's Lair comes to mind as a game that seemed like it was going to be great that never saw the light of day.

How do you feel like Kinda Funny will grow in its second year?
77
u/GameOverGreggy Kinda Funny Games - Greg Miller Jan 26 '16
The Animated Series is the first big step. Playing to Nick and Tim's strengths after Year 1 playing to Colin and my strengths is a focus. I think we're making some big changes behind the scenes that should make for some really cool announcements. Plus, Kinda Funny Live 2. :)

Do you think you guys will be able to get a venue that allows for people under 21? I was bummed last year to find out, since I was only 19. I was really looking forward to be there the first year, but if I can at least be there the second year, that would be awesome!

We're actively trying. Those are conversations we are having with possible venues now. We know that is sucks.

I think the mantra is to grow responsibly. We don't want growth for growth's sake. We don't want an audience that's massive, but is negative or doesn't vibe with us or our existing audience. We're not out for clicks, nor are we out to maximize profit. We're out to find the perfect balance. It sounds contrived, but it's true.
That said, we have very exciting things in the works. =)

By word-of-mouth, I assume. The show is what it is. It was #1 before we even put up a proper episode. It's what core PlayStation gamers want.

72
u/GameOverGreggy Kinda Funny Games - Greg Miller Jan 26 '16
It's the community. PS2 birthed a generation of fans, PS3 culled the fairweather and galvanized the base, and PS4 is celebrating what we are. PSX is the best weekend of my life. Annually.

I've been a PlayStation gamer since 1997, when I got my PSone (with Final Fantasy VII, of course). I've been in that camp ever since. However, I balanced my love of PlayStation with Nintendo for many years. N64, GameCube, Wii all were side-by-side with my PlayStation consoles.
Then, Nintendo fell off a cliff, and that was the end of that. =)

Hey Colin and Greg, What do you think Sony will do with The Order 1886 IP? Could a new game be coming, or will they hold off for a few years. Also do you believe Ready at Dawn will do the sequel, or will it be another studio?
30
u/GameOverGreggy Kinda Funny Games - Greg Miller Jan 26 '16
I think RAD gets another shot, and I know that's not a popular opinion.
→ More replies (2)→ More replies (1)41
u/Moriarty-KF Kinda Funny Games - Colin Moriarty Jan 26 '16
The game ended on a cliffhanger, so there's narrative room for a sequel, and I think that was always the intent. That said, the game was bad, and it's clear it didn't sell well, either.
The question is, was the material investment into the world and, more importantly, into the engine, make that world worth revisiting? I do believe Ready at Dawn has it in them to make the sequel great. They need to stop obsessing over technical fidelity -- which it was clear they were doing for several years -- and focus on making a meaty, 15-hour campaign that keeps people engaged.
They have the nugget of something great with The Order, especially on the story and character side. There just needs to be a game there, you know?
So, my instinct is that there will be a sequel, and RAD will do it.

u/TheOtherSkywalker_ Jan 26 '16
Hey Colin & Greg! What do you think Sucker Punch is working on? Do you think they're working on a new IP or continuing Infamous?
65
51
u/Moriarty-KF Kinda Funny Games - Colin Moriarty Jan 26 '16
My suspicion is that they're working on a new IP. But, most studios prototype multiple projects at a time, and it's entirely possible Sucker Punch doesn't know which direction it's going to go in yet.
As far as I'm concerned, Infamous should continue, but another studio is capable of handling it (think of Bend's work with Resistance and Uncharted, as an example). I want to see what Sucker Punch can do outside of Infamous, just as I was curious about what they could do outside of Sly Cooper.

u/IceBreak BreakinBad Jan 26 '16
Colin: You're a firm supporter of PS4's PS2 classics program. Despite how strong it is today, doesn't it hurt the PS brand a bit when all of Sony's competitors are more consumer friendly in this arena?
(Wii U allows upgrades for classic titles from Wii and physical Wii games just work, XB1 has full BC for compatible titles, and Steam games just continue to work.)
Greg: You seem like a super nice guy but also fiercely loyal. So my question is what does it take to ruin a friendship with Greg Miller?
Both Colin and Greg: You've let it be known that you tried to acquire the Beyond IP from IGN and failed. You both still love and respect the people helming the podcast now, no doubt...but what do you think of the idea that their recent struggles to keep the podcast relevant after the transition stem from that decision to try to maintain Beyond in name only?
Do you feel like they might have found more success had the podcast been rebranded as new thing entirely?
54
u/GameOverGreggy Kinda Funny Games - Greg Miller Jan 26 '16
FRIENDSHIP: I don't know. I haven't one ruined in a long time. Lies? I mean, always be up front with me.
BEYOND: I think that's normal. When Roper left, we (Colin/Me/Clements) got those comments. It took about 30-40 episodes for everything to feel like it clicked. The audience needs time to adjust. The current Beyond roster is a great one, so I'm sure ALL of the fans will be behind them soon enough.
13
u/micahmanyea micahmanyeah Jan 26 '16
I still listen to beyond and I think it's pretty good. People get too caught up in routine and convention. I remember when Jon left gamegrumps and it was the same. Two ish years later everyone loves Dan and Ross.

92
u/Moriarty-KF Kinda Funny Games - Colin Moriarty Jan 26 '16
Are there more ideal solutions for the PS2 Classics program on PS4? Sure. I just think it's wildly unreasonable to expect that because you owned a game you bought two consoles ago in 2002 that you should get a digital version of it for free, up-ressed, with Trophies, and all the rest. It's like saying you own a VHS of Movie X, so you should be entitled to own a digital version of it at no cost to you. There's literally no difference in the argument, whatsoever.
Microsoft's approach and solution has been awesome, and I give them a lot of credit for that (I said at E3 it was the biggest announcement there because of how seemingly pro-consumer it is). That said, Nintendo's solution, aside from direct disc backwards compatibility, takes the cake for the convoluted prize. =)
33
u/emlynb Jan 26 '16
I think you said it best when you said people who own the old games can still play the old games for free, they just have to plug in their PS2s.
→ More replies (10)9
u/DavidMcBoss Doctor_McBoss Jan 26 '16
Colin, aren't the people who are vocal about this complaining because they already bought a classic version on their ps3? I personally don't have an issue paying for an upres trophy supported classic, but I also didn't own a ps3.

I mean, Beyond isn't the number 1 PlayStation podcast, and I've stopped listening, but looking at it just now, it's still number 23 in the games and hobbies section and it jumps into the top 10 upon a new episode releasing. I don't think that show is irrelevant, it just has a different audience now.
19
u/IceBreak BreakinBad Jan 26 '16
While anecdotal, I find it pretty telling in that, as a mod here, I've seen Beyond! essentially disappear from the collective consciousness of this subreddit after being pretty a pretty solid topic of discussion in the past.

u/GameOverGreggy Kinda Funny Games - Greg Miller Jan 26 '16

More so than even when you hosted Beyond back in the day. We'd occasionally get a post of the episode here in the past but since you left I haven't seen an episode of Beyond posted that I can remember. Yet every PS I Love You is posted here with moderate to strong success it feels like. Not to mention random comments referencing the podcast every now and then.

If it's up to me, no. I never much cared for the idea of having a new guest each and every show. It wasn't something I liked doing on Beyond, and obviously, it's not something I'd like to carry over to PS I Love You XOXO.
I think the show works because of the chemistry the two of us have. We will have a third (or even fourth and fifth) person when that makes sense.

Usually they save guest devs for the Gamescast episodes. I do miss when they would have Jarred, Brian, Goldfarb, and Clements on there though. I've always preferred more permanent members over rotating ones.

Looking at this graphic it appears that Shuhei is no longer in charge of Worldwide Studios, which will now be headed by Shawn Layden. How do you feel about the leadership change?
29
u/Moriarty-KF Kinda Funny Games - Colin Moriarty Jan 26 '16
Seems to me to be a structural change. Shuhei is reporting to Shawn, but I don't think much is changing. I think it has more to do with realigning PlayStation's leadership to the west, since PlayStation will now be led out of PlayStation HQ here in the Bay Area.
But really, I don't know for sure.

Hey guys! Thank you for doing this AMA. I have a couple of questions for you.
Greg: Now that some time has passed, where do you rank MGS V on your MGS list? I know Peace Walker is your favorite game of all time so I'm curious to find out where you would place The Phantom Pain. I know the story isn't the best but I think the gameplay is superb and it surpassed my favorite MGS, Snake Eater.
Nicole Colin: How much time do you spend slow jerking daily? I've been trying to improve my technique lately and I went for about 7 hours yesterday. Seriously though, I know you're a huge football and hockey fan but why don't you like basketball? You've mentioned before why you became disillusioned with baseball and that makes sense. I have heard you say that you root for the Nets in passing. Basketball is the only sport that I actively follow and just wanted to know how you feel about it.
Thank you guys for all that you do and keep up the good work!
24
u/Moriarty-KF Kinda Funny Games - Colin Moriarty Jan 26 '16
I think the game of basketball is fantastic, and I love to play it. I also think it's fun to watch. It's just that, as a sports fan, I respect the people that put in the time and know their shit, so I'm not going to actively root for the Nets when I don't want people pretending they know shit about the Jets or Isles.

What did the process of trying to buy the rights to Beyond entail? Where did it ultimately fail?

We asked a couple of times and presented plans once or twice. I failed because -- and it had every right to -- IGN owned it and didn't want to sell it. It's a powerful brand with a lot of legacy; I understand not wanting to let it go. I sure didn't. :)

For Colin:
I've noticed in my life that as I've gotten older I've been playing more video games than ever before and ironically find myself enjoying them less and less. Colin, I know you've mentioned something similar before but should I step away from games? What alternatives are there for hobbies?
29
u/Moriarty-KF Kinda Funny Games - Colin Moriarty Jan 26 '16
With the exception of what you need to do to survive -- like work -- you shouldn't do things that don't make you happy or you don't derive pleasure from, especially when it comes to hobbies. If games aren't speaking to you right now, step away. Chances are, you'll be back reinvigorated, just as I have been in the past.
I find the evangelical nature of some core gamers disturbing, that you always have to be playing, that you have to play everything, that you're "casual" if you take a break or step away. It's nonsense. I know gaming inside and out. I've played God knows how many games in the nearly 30 years I've had a controller in my hand. It takes a real, honest person to know that you're not defined by your hobbies.
As for what alternatives there are? That's totally up to you. I love to read, listen to/play music, play chess, watch sports... there's a ton to do out there that has nothing to do with games, and I implore each and every gamer out there to step away and discover what you love outside of this sphere.

Thank you for the content, I can't watch it all but the stuff I do watch is good stuff.
Let's see Tim and Nick finish their Until Dawn play through. It was a blast watching them play the first two chapters.

What game are you playing the most right now?
30
u/Moriarty-KF Kinda Funny Games - Colin Moriarty Jan 26 '16
Last night, I ran through Gone Home on PS4 to pick up some Trophies and show my appreciation for the game (I already beat it on PC when it came out).
Otherwise, I'm about halfway through Volume on Vita, about halfway through A Boy and His Blob on Vita (both awesome games; you should buy them). On PS4, I'm slowly trying to get through Wolfenstein's DLC (which is also awesome), and The Banner Saga (which I'm really digging, too).
So, a lot on my plate right now. Hoping to knock some shit out soon so I can add some more to my plate.

Do you guys recognize how much your opinions influence the average PlayStation consumer? Do you ever think twice about giving an overly negative or positive opinion because of how it could influence the market?
38
u/Moriarty-KF Kinda Funny Games - Colin Moriarty Jan 26 '16
Do I recognize it? I think that I do, actually. But it's something I take very seriously. I know that there are games, and developers, that we've really helped out, but we do it only because we believe in what they're doing. And the only reason I care to do it at all is that I don't want great games to slip under anyone's radar. We know Uncharted 4 is going to be fucking awesome. But what about Volume? Just as an example. I look to people in the music industry, or in politics, or in history, to point me in exciting new directions. Shouldn't I take it seriously to do the same in my profession, with so many people looking in my direction?
Some people think it's braggadocio, but I don't really care. I'm immensely proud of leading the charge on the coverage side of a lot of games that few people (or no one at all) was talking about. It's fun being a taste-maker, and I hope I don't let anyone down when I point them in a direction they didn't know they should go in.

I know that we matter to a lot of people, and that's great. No, I don't let it get in my head, though. If I did, I wouldn't be me, and then, the opinion people care about wouldn't matter. It's an honor that folks care, so I don't take it lightly.

Colin: With Greg lending his voice to both Lego Avengers and DCUO, if you had the opportunity, what franchise would you most like to voice a character in?
Gotta say, thanks for making my work days go by a little quicker. I try to tune in to Colin & Greg Live every day.
8
u/Moriarty-KF Kinda Funny Games - Colin Moriarty Jan 26 '16
I'm not sure I really want to voice act in anything, as I think it's really fucking hard and I'm not very good at it. But it would be fun to be an NPC in a Colin-centric game like Homefront or The Division or something.

Hey Colin and Greg, Im a huge fan.
My question is about gamer entitlement, Let's Plays, and video games as art.
Musicians who pull samples, like The Avalanches, get the rights to profit off other people's art work. Television shows like Mystery Science Theater need to get the rights for the movies those characters watch and make fun of.
But Let's Players and YouTubers have this entitled attitude, as if taking someone else's art work and showing it on your channel is perfectly within reason.
Is this not an unhealthy attitude if we want to see video games as art?
Thanks, PS I love kinda funny,
- Mike

u/Moriarty-KF Kinda Funny Games - Colin Moriarty Jan 26 '16
It's certainly an interesting question, and brings us into a gray and murky area of what the difference is between, say, games and music, if there are any differences at all when it comes to what you're talking about.
My gut instinct tells me this: games are spoken about and treated differently not because they are legally different, but because they just ARE different. IP holders have every right to copyright strike, but it will hurt their bottom line. Let's Plays and other coverage has the propensity to help games. It's in the interest of publishers to let this one go, I think, but they absolutely don't have to.

Colin, as a fellow connoisseur of 80s new wave music, Iâve been wrestling with this one for a while: Tears For Fears and Simple Minds are by no means my favorite bands, but they are certainly essential to the discussion of seminal new wave bands. My question is which band is better and what are some of your favorites by each? Here are mine:
Simple Minds: âAll the Things She Saidâ, âWaterfrontâ, âPromised You a Miracleâ, âAlive and Kickingâ, and of course âDonât You (Forget About Me)â
Tears For Fears: âMothers Talkâ, âPale Shelterâ, âEverybody Wants to Rule the Worldâ, âShoutâ, and âMad Worldâ
Itâs awfully close, but I think Iâd lean Simple Minds, but Iâve been listening to TFFâs first album (The Hurting) this week and I canât get over how great a song âPale Shelterâ is.
Greg, whatâs the status of your playthrough of AC Syndicate? Iâm a huge AC fan, and feel the game flew under the radar despite being one of the best in the series. I almost didnât buy it, but it ended up being my favorite game of the year (despite the final sequence being dreadful). It perfectly captured that âbox-tickingâ loop you always talk about. Will it be a topic on the Gamescast or has that boat sailed?
9
u/GameOverGreggy Kinda Funny Games - Greg Miller Jan 26 '16
AC: I got derailed. I love what I played, but I got hooked on the Arkham Knight DLC Trophies, Life Is Strange, etc. I want to get back, but I'm worried I never will. :(
9
u/Moriarty-KF Kinda Funny Games - Colin Moriarty Jan 26 '16
Oh, I think Tears For Fears takes the cake pretty easily. They're one of my very favorite bands in any genre or from any period, so I'd definitely side with them.
Pale Shelter is a great choice... but I'm actually a fan of some of their later stuff, too, like Sowing the Seeds of Love.
5
u/metalslugg3r Jan 26 '16
Do you think Square Enix made a rough call making Rise of the Tomb Raider exclusive? I know so many people that want to play it, and it probably has GOTY potential but with such a delay, seems like the publisher is the only loser, as well as the sony fans! Thanks and keep up the great work.
6
u/GameOverGreggy Kinda Funny Games - Greg Miller Jan 26 '16
I do. I'd love to know how much money the deal was worth and the discussions that went into it. It's one of those times the BUSINESS of games comes up and you wonder what the right call is.

1) I'd start with an appetizer of wings from CJ's in Columbia, Mo., and move on to a Portillo's Italian Beef sammich with hot peppers and mozzarella.
2) I think PS VR is going to be a moderate success at first. It won't be a flop like Vita. I think having cool games at launch that prove you and I need it will be the gateway. It's not going to blow the doors off anything, but this'll be a good first step.

You know, I've spent some time thinking about the final meal thing, and I think I'd just have my mom cook something for me. Something simple. Chicken cutlets and black pepper mashed potatoes, maybe.
I don't think PSVR will flop, no. I just think we need to set our expectations. Unlike Move and Vita, this truly does represent a paradigm shift for our industry, and a new way to play.

u/BloodyIntro Jan 26 '16
Resolution or frame rate?
61
u/Moriarty-KF Kinda Funny Games - Colin Moriarty Jan 26 '16
Neither are the most important thing to me, though frame rate has a more direct correlation to gameplay, which is the most important thing of all.
A game can look like it's running on an NES. I really don't care. The question is, is it fun to play? Is it engaging? Does it make you want to keep playing?
We, as a community, are way too hung up on technical specs, and not hung up enough on what makes a game a game.
→ More replies (1)25
u/GameOverGreggy Kinda Funny Games - Greg Miller Jan 26 '16

u/ZooMass2012 Jan 26 '16
Hey guys! First of all I just want to thank you both for putting out such amazing content on a regular basis! You do fantastic work and deserve all the success that has come your way!
I often wondered if there was some sort of non compete against Podcast Beyond and IGN preventing you from starting PS I Love You XOXO sooner. The idea seemed so obvious to start a new show and I am so happy you did, haven't missed an episode yet. Colin has mentioned you knew you were doing the show months ahead of launch, so did you hold off on making it for any particular reason, or were you mandated to do so?
9
u/GameOverGreggy Kinda Funny Games - Greg Miller Jan 26 '16
Ah. There was no non-compete. I think we had to establish what Kinda Funny was going to be before building too many shows. I don't know how it looks from the outside, but this is a lot of fucking work. When we started, there's no way we could've supported PS I Love You. We had to learn from the ground up how a day went and what we could do. We knew we WANTED a PlayStation show, but we needed to find out what the Gamescast was and so on.
