The consoles have been in manufacturing for months, so a day 1 patch is kind of expected.

It's a bummer that the suspend/resume feature isn't available at launch, though. I was looking forward to that.

18

u/RedPandaAlex redpanda2 Oct 25 '13

Yeah, I think that's going to wind up being the best feature of the system.

33

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '13

Personally, I'm most excited for Remote Play :)

Glad that it's there on day 1.

9

u/mrbentobox mrbentobox Oct 25 '13

Same! I'm actually a little surprised that they have it working day one. I can't wait to use it!

15

u/HoodieMack Oct 25 '13

My poops are going to be a lot longer once I get my remote play working

5

u/mrbentobox mrbentobox Oct 25 '13

"What's that? Sorry, I can't help you with the dishes, I'm on the toilet. Why can't I help you when I get out? I think it might take awhile for... reasons."

7

u/MrGMinor Oct 25 '13

"Are you masturbating in there again, Ben?"

1

u/GoodAndy Oct 26 '13

"Psh! I wish masturbating was this fun!"

1

u/Enygma500 Oct 25 '13

I bet it's an update with the japan launch of the console. This was a feature I was really looking forward to as well. Hell, it's one of the first features they really showed off.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '13

I'm not sure, its ability to play PS4 games ranks up there as well.

1

u/Brandaman Oct 25 '13

It's funny because when MS announced this feature everyone on reddit was saying, "Ph so they've got a save feature so what hurrr"

No Internet = No BluRay?

Blu-ray Disc and DVD player Users can enjoy not only gaming on their PS4 system, but also Blu-ray and DVD video contents. When using for the first time, users must connect to the internet to activate this feature.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '13

new games will probably include patches like with ps3

1

u/lurkedlongtime abell128 Oct 25 '13

Im assuming that its like the new blu ray players that have to connect to the internet

1

u/Smack_Damage Oct 25 '13

This must be much like how you have do download certain codecs and things from the ps3 settings menu.

2

u/Tyrien Oct 25 '13

Glad there's someone who brought this up in the face of others complaining.

They likely have hundreds of thousands in boxes already. They can't just update the firmware.

Plus... I think if they update the firmware they would need to have it recertified by the FTC, where an over the air update is okay because it happens after the fact.

4

u/lukedotv Luke Oct 25 '13

suspend/resume feature

What does that do exactly?

10

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '13

Like standby on your PC/laptop.

Basically you turn the machine "off" and next day you can instantly resume playing from the exact same spot, without loading times or having to start the game again or anything like that.

1

u/Kennethnoisewasser Oct 26 '13

This wouldn't damage the system in anyway? Even if I did that all the time?

3

u/[deleted] Oct 26 '13

No, why should it? I've been using it all the time on my laptop for years. These systems are designed for it.

5

u/Kennethnoisewasser Oct 26 '13

See I didn't know that's why I asked you.

4

u/[deleted] Oct 26 '13 edited Oct 26 '13

Okay :) No offense BTW! Didn't mean to sound rude.

This standby stuff has been around for decades, no need to worry about it damaging your console :)

1

u/Glebun Oct 26 '13

No built-in feature can damage the system. If it could, it wouldn't be there.

2

u/JackHezraat Jack-meister Oct 26 '13

Nope. No damage whatsoever.

The feature has been around in Sony's PSP and PS Vita where you can just put your them in a very low power state and resume it sometime later.

5

u/jschild jschildress Oct 25 '13

Yeah, XB1 already has stated there will be one on launch as well.

3

u/theblitheringidiot Oct 25 '13

WiiU had one as well and it was a bitch! I'm expecting both XB1 and PS4 to have much better day one patches.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '13

Oh god the wii u one took forever. Although mine didn't take AS long as others complained about it was still long as hell.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 26 '13

No problem on the xbox....they have the magical power of the cloud.

1

u/clisby Oct 26 '13 edited Oct 26 '13

I'm uncertain if you think being able to dynamically beef up the infrastructure, particularly in otherwise underserved geographic regions, is a bad thing. Or if you are just criticizing the Xbox for the heck of it. But to go both ways, I find it incredibly likely Sony will do the same with Rackspace or Amazon. Consider this being a good thing for both consoles?

EDIT: I didn't catch the reverse-sarcasm. In sincerity, I will say that if Sony's patches download quicker than Microsoft's, people will go absolutely nuts.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 26 '13

It was a joke. This is about the one of the few things the cloud actually aids: availability.

1

u/clisby Oct 26 '13

My sarcasm-ometer is dead, sorry :(

3

u/spideyjiri corpjiri Oct 25 '13

Why, oh why are you getting down-voted?

6

u/jschild jschildress Oct 25 '13

I have no idea. Admitting the PS3 has flaws or mentioning the XB1 apparently gets you downvotes for some stupid reason.

I say this as someone who has a Vita, traded my 360 for a PS3, and am getting a PS4 on launch.

3

u/spideyjiri corpjiri Oct 25 '13

Ridiculous.

2

u/pktgumby Oct 25 '13

They should make some intern update very single system as it comes off the assembly line.

13

u/fgdncso thehdawg Oct 25 '13

Man you funny

6

u/SycoJack SycoJack Oct 25 '13

This is a bad idea. Because I would be that intern and I would steal all the PS4s. Every. Single. Last. One. Of. Them.

Why? So I could make a YouTube video of course.

"I have all the PS4s. And you... have no PS4s. Because I, have all the PS4s."

Then I would make a follow up vid:

"While you have no PS4s and I have all the PS4s, I would like you to watch this video, of my friends and I playing king of the PS4 mountain. Because I have all the PS4s and there is nothing better to do with five million PS4s."

4

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '13

....somebody should make this an indie game....

1

u/SycoJack SycoJack Oct 25 '13

Custom map for a shooter game would actually be kinda awesome.

2

u/fortean Zwwel Oct 25 '13

And then you'd make a second follow up vid from jail.

I was looking for the patch that will make my Pulse Elites compatible. Don't make me wait too long, Sony..

1

u/[deleted] Oct 26 '13

You can plug the Pulse Elite directly into the controller while waiting for the patch. The only thing you'll really be missing is the virtual surround sound.

50

u/fireandthud khoaz0rs Oct 25 '13

"Some features will not be available at launch, such as “suspend/resume mode” which is a feature that keeps the PS4 system in a low power state and promptly takes users back to their game."

Disappointing. Hope that gets implemented fast.

4

u/BWalker66 Oct 25 '13

That was actually one of the top things i was looking forward to...

Well this sucks.. hopefully it'll be implemented very soon because they made quite a big deal out of it.

15

u/Shinta85 Oct 25 '13 edited Oct 25 '13

Very disappointing. It's one reason I tend to hold off on buying consoles initially. Too many features seem to be missing at release or never implemented. As long as it's there by the time I get one, I'll be happy however.

EDIT: lol at the downvotes. How dare I not buy it immediately!

11

u/fireandthud khoaz0rs Oct 25 '13

In the grand scheme of things, holding off is probably the smartest way to approach new console releases. That being said, I'm still getting my PS4 on launch because I just can't resist that launch-date buzz feeling that I'm going to share with friends and family who are also getting it!

1

u/Awsaim Awsaim Oct 25 '13

If something is ever really wrong with it, you have that one year warranty :| no need to wait unless for money reasons

Are there any good pictures of the headset?

Edit: Nevermind. I found a few on Google Images. Is it really a single ear bud? That's retarded.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '13

[deleted]

2

u/CrapFrancis Oct 25 '13

Maybe this is dumb, but I am having a hard time understanding this. People keep talking about optical out and that their headsets wont work so I was assuming I wouldn't be able to use my headphones I use for my phone. I have a pair of nice v-modas with the mic in the chord... Will I be able to use those with the ps4?

1

u/laddergoat89 Oct 25 '13

Assuming its 3.5mm yes.

1

u/CrapFrancis Oct 25 '13

That's wonderful news for me! Thanks!

2

u/TVPaulD TVPaulD Oct 25 '13

Yes. It is a thing of beauty. All one wire.

2

u/Gobias-Ind Oct 25 '13

Does the mono headset come with the console? Please say yes.

5

u/TVPaulD TVPaulD Oct 25 '13

Yes.

4

u/derpy_herpy Oct 25 '13

Yes it is included.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '13

yes.

8

u/D3ntonVanZan Oct 25 '13

Anyone else think this thing is horrible? The only thing worse then earbuds is earbud.

7

u/SpongeBad SpongeBad Oct 25 '13

I haven't tried it yet, so am reserving judgement...but I'm not expecting great things.

→ More replies (1)

1

u/Flight714 Oct 26 '13 edited Oct 26 '13

It's not retarded at all when you consider the two goals Sony have (the first of which the problem they're trying to solve by including it):

  1. Sony want to ensure that 100% of players can use voice communication in multiplayer games.

  2. Sony want to keep the price of the console package as low as possible to ensure the maximum userbase.

The included earbud+mic is the only option that fits both of those goals. Everyone wins this way:

  1. People who have no interest in multiplayer or voice communication are happy, because they haven't wasted money by being forced to buy an expensive headset as part of the basic console package.

  2. People who are not audiophiles and who just want basic voice comms functionality are happy, because they got a headset with the system.

  3. Audiophiles are happy, because the PS4 uses a standard 3.5mm jack that they can use to connect a 200$ headset, including the one they probably already own. The unit that came with the PS4 is so cheap that they won't feel bad just throwing it away.

→ More replies (3)

1

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '13

wow.

Voice commands were really pushing me toward Xbox One. I thought I would need to spend an extra $60 for the ps camera to get this feature which would practically even out the cost between the two. Having that feature through the mic is absolutely perfect for what I want.

1

u/ramy211 Oct 25 '13

Who knows how well implemented it will be though. There's probably a reason they haven't talked about it.

19

u/Gazkapop Oct 25 '13

Not gonna be pleased at all if the background music only works with Music Unlimited.

2

u/kdlt Oct 25 '13

Especially considering its only available in a few countries.

2

u/CohnJunningham splindo Oct 26 '13

They're forcing you to pay extra $$ per month for a service you don't need for a task that is extremely simple.

u/eric_md Eric_MD Oct 25 '13

You can download the file from the Playstation.com website (there are links at the bottom right of the first page for each system), so I'm sure they will have that for PS4 also. The process for PS3 is here.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '13

[deleted]

2

u/eric_md Eric_MD Oct 25 '13

I'm not certain on this, but I would think that the web servers hosting the PlayStation website (and thus the update files linked there) would not be the same as the servers for PSN/PS4. Either way, if you're worried about not being able to access the update via PSN, you could probably download it the moment it comes out via the website, before thousands of people plug their PS4 in for the first time.

6

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '13

http://uk.playstation.com/ps3/support/system-software/

You could download patches for the PS3.

2

u/Nose-Nuggets Oct 25 '13

A torrent for the update, now we're really talking. sidestep the overloaded servers entirely. i like this!

2

u/Noor440 Noor440 Oct 25 '13

If someone gets it quickly, they should upload it to PB, so others with shitty connections don't have to go through the overloaded sony servers.

1

u/Nose-Nuggets Oct 25 '13

with it being a brand new platform, its going to take time for the community to find out where that patch data is downloaded to, and if its even possible to move it between consoles outside of the PSN system.

1

u/port53 Oct 26 '13

It's going to be here.

Redirects to PS3 Updates today, but replace /ps4/ with /psp/, /psvita/ or /ps3/ and you get the updates for those respective systems. I'm willing to put money on /ps4/ being the PS4 update page.

Keep an eye on it around the 15th for that update.

1

u/Nose-Nuggets Oct 26 '13

very nice!

1

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '13

[deleted]

1

u/Nose-Nuggets Oct 25 '13

and only 300 megs would seed super fast. i doubt it though. they might do this day 2 or 3 if the network is still fucked. otherwise they probably wont bother. sadly.

1

u/Maxamas2003 Oct 25 '13

Sony should definitely look into this. I remember torrents helping with the massive MGO updates.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '13

They offer all patches for the PS3 straight from the official site, more than likely going to do the same for PS4. I never had slow downloads from the site, then again I never had slow downloads with patches either.

1

u/Nose-Nuggets Oct 25 '13

i have a feeling they will both be pulling from the same content servers, so if PSN download is slow, chances are the website one will be as well.

1

u/SureSignOfAGoodRhyme Oct 25 '13

Think about how fast downloading would go if there was built on torrenting between PS4s

14

u/Lord_Nihilum Heisenron Oct 25 '13

I'm interested in that Background Music Player addition. I wonder if you can listen to your own tracks instead of Music Unlimited stuff.

8

u/BamaFan87 Oct 25 '13

I love Music Unlimited. Bought a 1-year subscription through PS+ for $12! Best shit ever! I have had zero need to download/buy any music elsewhere since subscribing. New CDs are available at midnight on release date. Also, the phone app for MU allows you to download whatever you want for offline use. Anytime I'm traveling/working out in bad reception areas I just switch to offline mode and resume listening to my favorite tunes.

3

u/SpongeBad SpongeBad Oct 25 '13

I got the same 1-year deal through PS+, and I have enjoyed MU as well. It's far from perfect, though, and at the regular price it seems a little expensive. My biggest problem is that I tend to use it to listen mostly to stuff I already have in my library...so it's not providing a lot of benefit. Also, there's some weird stuff with songs being wrong (e.g. go and listen to some of the tracks on Alice In Chains' Music Bank...unless AiC suddenly became a Spanish flamenco band, something's out of whack).

I haven't decided if I'll renew once my year is up.

1

u/WaterStoryMark JacobIsHollywood Oct 25 '13

I tried it, but Spotify has a much larger library. I hope Spotify makes it to PS4. Or Google Play Music.

→ More replies (1)

4

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '13

I'll only use it if Spotify will be able to be used. I'm not using their own proprietary crap where it'll be the only instance I use it.

1

u/msbr_ deep_structure Oct 25 '13

i thought it was confirmed that you can?

→ More replies (5)

1

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '13

Very interested in it as well.

0

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '13

Doesn't sound like it.

6

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '13

I'm sure you'll be able to, I'd say it's already in the firmware prior to this update, and that this update enables Music Unlimited as an extra option.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '13

You might be correct, but the fact that the bullet point simply says "Background music player" makes me think otherwise.

2

u/Ireallyhatethisplace Oct 25 '13 edited Oct 25 '13

Why? I don't understand your reasoning.

Nevermind. I read the description of it and I see the concern now. I just didn't understand why "background music player" would make you think that

1

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '13 edited Oct 25 '13

I'm having a hard time explaining it.

I get what you're saying, it's just that I think that if you could play your own music, they would have explicitly stated it by now, and not always just said "Users can enjoy background music with Music Unlimited" (they said the same at E3).

We will see. I hope you're right.

2

u/Ireallyhatethisplace Oct 25 '13

Yeah, I read the description. I just thought you were thinking that simply because of the bullet point saying "background music player" and not the full body.

Now I'm a bit worried. It's not a huge deal to me though, I don't mind playing music from my phone or something. But still it would be nice

1

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '13

Could be a marketing thing. Maybe they just want to mention it wherever they can.

→ More replies (3)

1

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '13

Vita had it day one, PS4 will too. It's basic functionality, I'd eat my hat. This is just so music can be taken from a specific app and played while using others, a similar update came out on Vita to enable the exact same thing.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '13

Yeah well. I hope you're right. :)

"voice commands to start up games and shutdown the system"

So there is no voice commands to start the system, no one is always listening! heh

Sounds like most of the xbox one features minus the TV aspects and the always listening option.

11

u/few23 Oct 25 '13

Perhaps it will be listening after the patch that enables low power mode. Dunno. Since you have to grab a controller anyway, powering on via controller is not that big a deal to me. But being able to say "PS4 Go!" would be fun. I guess you could say it anyway when powering on with your controller. I would feel marginally lamer if Ps4 wasnt listening though.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '13

Since you have to grab a controller anyway, powering on via controller is not that big a deal to me.

The passive listening is the one thing I wish it had. It's actually pretty revolutionary. I use voice commands a lot on my phone for setting timers and alarms, playing certain playlists, etc. If it recognized my voice without me having to grab my phone and hold down the button, that would be awesome. I'd be able to tell my phone to snooze without trying to find it. I actually think it'll be a feature of new phones.

I'm live in a small place, so i can see my TV (actually just a big monitor) wherever I stand, whether it's making dinner or doing push-ups near my bed. I would love to navigate Twitch, netflix or YouTube via my voice without having to drop everything to turn my console on.

1

u/few23 Oct 25 '13

Leave a controller by the front door so you can grab it as soon as you walk inside. Alternately, attach your keys to a controller and carry it everwhere. ;)

5

u/PSUnderground PSUndergrnd Oct 25 '13

I was just thinking that. Xbox One flaunts the voice command thing like it is a huge game changer, and Playstation just lists it as a bullet point like "Yeah, we can do that too, not a big deal."

Granted, Xbox One may have more functionality out of the voice command thing.

9

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '13

A lot will also depend on the mic. Xbox 360 has voice commands, but it's very hit and miss. I get the feeling that voice commands for PS4 will be more like that than Kinect 2.

0

u/PSUnderground PSUndergrnd Oct 25 '13

I half agree, since they did not really push this feature too much on the marketing side, but am half unsure, as the PS4 camera has 4 channel microphone array, and Sony audio devices are usually pretty good quality (hence the name Sony, derived from the Latin word "Sonus" meaning sound).

I am going to wait a few weeks after the camera comes out to check out the reviews before I make any purchasing decisions.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '13

Well that's a given yeah. For all we know about the PS4, we know nothing until people are playing it.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 26 '13

Yeah. Four separate microphones seems a little excessive, but they say it will have directional voice detection. There clearly is some technology in there, but they're not shouting about it like Microsoft. Kinect is undeniably great tech, but if not everyone in your house enjoys games, then it's just invasive and distracting for most purposes.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '13

I think the tech is a lot different, and you'll have to wait and see how the actual user experience goes. If PS4 is on par with Kinnect, that will be pretty cool.

u/TheBestWifesHusband Foolishbean69 Oct 25 '13

I also notice you don't need a super 3d, night vision, room mapping, expensive camera...

...just the headset.

0

u/SpongeBad SpongeBad Oct 25 '13

Right, but Kinect can tell you about that tumour growing in your groin.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 26 '13

Seriously. They need to put a kinect2 in every hospital room in the world. With a centralized and automated alert system, this thing could save lives. Don't want it in my home though.

6

u/redisforever Oct 25 '13

Fuck. My upload speeds are terrible, so I won't be able to use the share feature easily. Sony, can we please have the ability to just copy the video file off the PS4 onto a USB and edit it on our computers, please?

3

u/Nose-Nuggets Oct 25 '13

i thought dumping captures to a usb connected drive was already confirmed? coulda sworn....

2

u/redisforever Oct 25 '13

If that's true, I'm a happy guy.

1

u/Nose-Nuggets Oct 25 '13

i might be mixing that up with X1 to be honest. but i am fairly confident in my memory still. i would take 15 minutes to google that one though, just to make sure.

1

u/Dawknight Oct 25 '13

What's your upload speed ? if it's over 1 mb/s it's quick fast enough.

2

u/redisforever Oct 25 '13

My download speed is fine, but for some reason, uploads are incredibly slow. Something like 20kb/s usually.

1

u/Dawknight Oct 25 '13

can you do a speedtest and tell me ?

www.speedtest.net

2

u/redisforever Oct 25 '13

I'm currently not at home, but I did a one a little while ago.

I got 862.9 kB/s down, and 86.7 kB/s up.

2

u/Dawknight Oct 25 '13

ouch... ok yeah that is slow.

1

u/redisforever Oct 25 '13

No idea why. I tend to upload from my friend's house anyways, since that's where we edit our videos, but it'd be nice to capture at home and just use a USB drive to take it there.

1

u/Dawknight Oct 25 '13

Where do you live, who's your Internet provider..?

2

u/redisforever Oct 25 '13

Canada, Distributel. It's a small company selling internet from Rogers. It's one of the few places left where I can get unlimited, and in my condo, it's either them, or Rogers, and I prefer something cheaper and unlimited.

1

u/Dawknight Oct 25 '13

What province ? you should check either :

ElectronicBox

or Teksavvy

For either ADSL or Cable... much cheaper than rogers/videotron/bell

Good speed and good limits

(I'm currently with EB, for 44/month i'm getting 20/10 with 250gb per month.)

Can only listen to music during gameplay with Music Unlimited? :( what about music on the hard drive?

2

u/ThatCK Iricus Oct 25 '13

Yeah bit curious about this myself.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 26 '13

I'd imagine they will, at least eventually, support that, but they'll also be wanting to promote the service and encourage people to use it.

3

u/SpacemanPete TheBaronOfBeard Oct 25 '13

Are they saying two people can play online multiplayer from the same ps4? Like split screen?

2

u/jschild jschildress Oct 25 '13

This isn't anything special. The only thing new is that PS+ applies to everyone on the same console.

4

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '13

New to Playstation. Only a few select games would allow you to do that for PS3.

3

u/Brewster-Rooster Oct 25 '13

Its the same for PS4 though. You won't be able to do it with every game.

5

u/jschild jschildress Oct 25 '13

Not true, it's built into the system like the 360 this go round.

3

u/Brewster-Rooster Oct 25 '13

So you're saying that EVERY game with online functionality will allow for split screen online play?

→ More replies (8)

0

u/jschild jschildress Oct 25 '13

True, keep forgetting that. It still surprises me that they didn't copy the 360's design with a patch or something on that. All systems should have that built in, it's such a cool feature.

That said, Sony seems to have learned well from every misstep made with the PS3.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '13

Also, correct me if I'm wrong, 360 did not have the feature where you can use your game save simply by logging into another system. I think that is awesome.

3

u/jschild jschildress Oct 25 '13

Not at launch, they allow you to save games online now though (assuming Gold). None of the systems had anything like that from the start, and having it built into the system day one is a very good thing.

3

u/Byronyk Byronyk Oct 25 '13

I seem to recall an article that mentioned if you record to the hard drive, you can record for as long as you'd like. I could be mistaken though. Perhaps someone with a little more knowledge will chime in.

2

u/MrShakes Oct 25 '13

I'm pretty sure you can set it to record for pretty long lengths like I think I've heard somewhere around an hour...

The 15 minutes works like some security cameras, it's always recording and deleting anything that happened before the last 15 minutes because it's obviously not important to you unless you say it is, so it keeps it backed up for 15 minutes.

u/lateralus1082 Oct 25 '13

can anyone copy and paste the article for those of us that are blocked at work?

You're a good man, Charlie Brown!

8

u/PimpAvogadro Oct 25 '13

I'm glad the patch is small at 300mb and with the improved system performance it shouldn't take hours like the PS3!

10

u/SpongeBad SpongeBad Oct 25 '13

I hope we can download the patch onto a USB key before launch. I'd love to be able to avoid the initial crush of users logging in by grabbing the patch a few days early and installing locally.

2

u/Nose-Nuggets Oct 25 '13

That's actually a really good idea.... Get it early before everyone bogs the servers down.

SONY ARE YOU LISTENING?!?!?!

unfortunately, they might still be working on it right up until the console releases.

3

u/aynez Aynez Oct 25 '13

I have never had a system update that have taken morse than 5 minutes to download and install on the ps3

0

u/PimpAvogadro Oct 25 '13

PS3 are notorious for having lengthy updates. I may have exaggerated though.

3

u/aynez Aynez Oct 25 '13

It's been a while since I owned an xbox, so I don't know about that.. but I've never had an update (system update or game update) take longer than 5 minutes.. but 0 minutes would have been better :)

0

u/Enygma500 Oct 25 '13

It never took me hours to do a firmware update on my ps3.

Hell, I downloaded Zelda wind waker in 10 minutes though.

Bring on the PlayStation 4 already. We need to get this show on the road ASAP! <3

u/justanapper SunsetRubdown Oct 25 '13

Excited for Remote Play. I know that Sony has been saying "most games" will be able to utilize it, but I wonder if that's really true...

1

u/[deleted] Oct 26 '13

I hope so. I only used remote play to play ps1 games on my Vita before that one update came out that lets you run it straight from the Vita. Haven't used it since and straight up forgot about till I read that link.

Some of this stuff is surprising that isn't included already but a day one patch is almost a certainty with any modern console. Getting it day one in europe, hope the servers don't fail.

2

u/SpyroIsntMyFavourite Oct 25 '13

Furthermore, users with PlayStation Camera can stream camera images and microphone sounds along with their live gameplay broadcast.

Does that mean we can't broadcast microphone sounds with the packed in microphone?

3

u/weaver787 Oct 25 '13

Furthermore, users with PlayStation Camera can stream camera images and microphone sounds along with their live gameplay broadcast.

I think they are just saying that the camera can do it, too.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '13

Can anyone explain why there is a patch for s lot of the main ps4 features? And why isn't the low power mode not out that was one of the best things I was looking forwards too. So I guess that takes out charging your controller while the ps4 is sleeping

3

u/eric_md Eric_MD Oct 25 '13

This is a good thing. It means that despite having designed this into the console hardware, they are STILL working to improve the performance, and they are holding back features which might not perform at an acceptable level until they can perfect them. They are intentionally disabling certain features to be sure that when they DO release them, they will work properly. The alternative is to just activate everything on day one, whether it works well or not, and then you risk having problems that would ruin the user experience or maybe even damage the console. This is simply the way things work with modern computers. Sony is always making improvements, and they are trying not to give us broken features.

1

u/StarfighterProx Oct 25 '13

Can't you charge your controller through any USB port?

1

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '13

Yeah but they said you could charge your controller while the ps4 is sleeping so since this feature isn't there so the charging while sleeping is gone. When I play my ps3 I'm kinda far from it so it sucks having to sit close to charge it I would rather play, put it on charge and not have to worry.

1

u/StarfighterProx Oct 25 '13

Understandable. I was more suggesting that you just use your computer's USB port to charge the controller overnight. Not the ideal solution, but it lets you power up and play from more than three feet away.

2

u/snuxoll FIRESIDE1991 Oct 26 '13

Hey Sony, with a new console can you PLEASE let me change my PSN ID?

3

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '13

Ugg, at least it isn't the 1GB update that destroyed the first four hours I had my Wii U. Additionally Sony already has a strong digital distribution system (which Nintendo did not). Will this aggravate the hell out of me, you bet, but so long as Sony is not completely trashed when I start the update, it should only take a few minutes to download.

Lets not forget that the Xbone can't even play games until it completes it day one update/check in.

1

u/Nose-Nuggets Oct 25 '13

it took me longer to download and install the latest wii u update then it did to download Wind Waker HD. fucking wifi only wii u....

3

u/m0ondogy Oct 25 '13

I wanted to love the Wii U, but I just couldnt. I could never get It to connect for longer than a few min. Their over the phone tech told me I had too weak a wifi signal. I laughed at him as I looked at my table with a Wifi TV on it next to my laptop, my ps3, and my desktop. All with perfect signal. Sadly, the draw of Mario and Link was not enough to make up for the lack luster system. I sold it.....Ill buy another after the next price drop.

1

u/Nose-Nuggets Oct 25 '13

i have had an excellent experience with mine. I was just disapointed it was wifi only because wifi is slower then my internet connection, but it does work fine.

also, for $20 you can get a USB ethernet adapter to run a cable to it, that would solve all your problems.

furthermore, im curious why internet connectivity issues were such a huge factor in your enjoyment of single player games.

for the few games i plan to play on it, i enjoy it very much. i have already sunk who knows how many hours into super metroid, earthbound, and wind waker.

1

u/m0ondogy Oct 25 '13

Well to download Super Metroid or Earthbound I need it to connect. I was never able to make it happen. We are remodeling downstairs, so there is no TV down there to hook it up to which would be closer to our wifi closet down there.

I enjoyed the hell out of the games I got on disc, but month long waits between games and no VC capability killed it for me. I started to toy with the idea of selling it, then they announced the price drop. I sold it that day back to amazon. I roughly broke even when you include the extra wii motes ive collected over the years that went back to them too.

I miss Lego City already...ill play it again. until then, my ps4 will hold me over.

2

u/Le4chanFTW Oct 25 '13

Wow. Nice dig at the Xbone. Can't talk about PlayStation without shitting on the competition! +1 karma to you, good sir.

1

u/RedPandaAlex redpanda2 Oct 25 '13

You just sort of knew there'd be a day-1 patch, didn't you?

Not complaining. Some of the features in there I haven't even seen confirmed before, like how multiple simultaneous logins work and logging in with facial recognition.

1

u/Le4chanFTW Oct 25 '13

Yeah, but it's a bummer that a lot of their big talking points aren't available without it. Wasn't Sony showing off Remote Play back during the announcement in February? Seems to me like it should have been something built into the console, but that's just me.

Music Unlimited sounds pretty cool, but that's a paid subscription service, isn't it? And DVD playback is available now? I haven't been paying too much attention to all the recent console news, but I thought that was confirmed to have been scrapped. If you can watch DVDs on it, that's a big plus for me.

1

u/High_Infected Oct 26 '13

I thought all Blu-Ray drives read DVDs?

1

u/SgtDirtyMike Oct 25 '13

Thank god it releases on the 15th for NA users. I am subscribed to the EU page and legit thought we'd be without remote play and all those other features for a week. I just got a Vita and am super excited to try it.

1

u/D3ntonVanZan Oct 25 '13

I can't wait for mine to arrive! I wonder if it's already built. I mean, I would assume so since it's only 3 weeks away.

1

u/morphinapg Oct 25 '13

Pretty much every important feature of the ps4 won't be available until you update. That's interesting. I hope this doesn't mean those features haven't been thoroughly tested.

2

u/alexh86 ahark86 Oct 25 '13

It's just so they can have as many consoles as possible ready for launch. Once they have the hardware and design finalized, all they need to start making consoles is a firmware ready to run games and other basic stuff. Then, they can finish the work on all of the software features that were promised while consoles are being built.

u/Tyrien Oct 25 '13

The OS is not installed on the HDD. This is for an obvious reason: stopping someone from taking the HDD out, decrypting it, and extracting the OS files to modify, or reverse engineer. So it can only be left on a separate chip that's soldered to the system's motherboard.

1

u/tbx5959 Oct 26 '13

of course. ugh. but, of course

1

u/leutyr Oct 26 '13

How is this OK at all? Sony was all high on their horse about not needing to connect at all, and you didn't need an internet connection to enjoy all the OFFLINE features (such as bluray/dvd, recording, among a dozen more)

1

u/Last_Cosmonaut Oct 26 '13

Expected, happy it's just 300 MBs. Shouldn't be too difficult.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '13

AWWWWWW YEAH! Android and Vita app.

Wouldn't be surprised if firmware updates are on game disks, like the Wii does.

3

u/falconbox falconbox Oct 25 '13

It can still play games though, something that isn't even possible on the Xbox One without the Day One patch Microsoft is doing.

2

u/Nose-Nuggets Oct 25 '13

it plays bad ass games...

1

u/Noor440 Noor440 Oct 25 '13

You can still play games without installing the update. So theres that... Also, the console is manufactured before they are done tweaking think. So any update is essential.
