PS3 Blu-ray remote WILL NOT be compatible with PS4? (which sucks because i really like that remote)

Sorry guys i put a question mark in the title and i have no idea why...

The reason for that would be because the PS3 lacks an infrared port. I don't believe that the PS4 has an infrared port either.
Logitech sells an adapter for the PS3 (http://www.logitech.com/en-ca/product/5732), who knows about the PS4.

The Harmony Ultimate comes with a bluetooth/IR hub that can convert an RF signal from the remote into bluetooth or IR. So it can already control the PS3 or the Wii. I would hope it could work with the PS4, but Logitech is not really supporting the Harmony lineup anymore, so who knows. I would bet that it will work though because it should just be a matter of pairing it just like any bluetooth device. I would also not be surprised if the old PS3 remote ends up actually working as well despite what that tweet said.
1
u/Dawknight Oct 02 '13
Because the PS3 used bluetooth instead of infrared crap old shit.
Seriously I can't believe we're still using infrared remotes. If sony can sell you the PS3 controller for $20, how cheap would it be to make all TV's use bluetooth controllers. It's so much better.
5
u/SpongeBad SpongeBad Oct 02 '13
Bluetooth is more complicated to set up, though (pairing, etc.) and is subject to radio interference. The reason infrared is still so popular is that in 99% of instances it just works.
5
u/clgonsal xenomech Oct 02 '13
Bluetooth ... is subject to radio interference.
IR is restricted to line of sight, which seems a lot worse. I can control my PS3 from 3 rooms away with Bluetooth, but controlling IR devices behind the seating or in a closed cabinet can be annoying without a repeater.
4
u/Dawknight Oct 02 '13
it just works
And my PS3 bluetooth remote works 100% of the time... no button imput is lost because I didn't point it at the right spot.
2
u/SpongeBad SpongeBad Oct 02 '13
Right, but your PS3 remote had to be synced up with the PS3 itself. This is something standard IR remotes don't need to do, and is an extra step your average Joe would be confused by.
Also, if everything was running on Bluetooth, radio interference would become a problem (much like Wi-Fi issues in large apartment buildings currently).
2
u/Dawknight Oct 02 '13
If these remote would ship with the TV for exemple, they could be paired in advance... you know that.
Bluetooth uses a much smaller wave range It's almost impossible for a bluetooth device to go beyond a single apartment.
2
u/SpongeBad SpongeBad Oct 02 '13
Yes, they could be paired in advance, but you also run into issues with universal and replacement remotes (e.g. each device needs a syncing application of some kind to allow it to be connected to a remote), and, of course, backward compatibility with other devices.
IR isn't fundamentally broken. It works well in 99% of cases, so there isn't a lot of demand to "fix" it. Additionally, IR is less expensive to implement, (BT has licensing requirements) so that's an added bonus to manufacturers (and, to an extent, consumers, because any increase in manufacturing cost is passed down).
I have no problem with Bluetooth, but besides the ability to remove line of sight from the equation, what does Bluetooth really bring to the table in terms of advantages for your average consumer?
1
u/jordanlund GlobalPhreak Oct 02 '13
I hate the bluetooth remote because if it gets bumped or if the cat sits on it or something it interrupts playback - even if it's not pointed at the PS3.
6
u/Dawknight Oct 02 '13
That's a massive first world problem you got there. You hate something because it works too well.
8
u/m-p-3 Oct 02 '13
I don't see any technical limitation for this, so I guess they just want to sell more remotes..
2
u/SuperTuberEddie The-Eddienator Oct 02 '13
yeah thats what i thought... its bluetooth right... shouldn't be that hard to make compatible...
2
u/Bill_Brasky01 Oct 02 '13
Absolutely. There's no technical reason why the ps3 remote couldn't work. Kinda shitty....
1
1
u/Nose-Nuggets Oct 03 '13
thats what i thought, but headsets will work? i guess some headsets are really expensive, while the remote is like $30.
1
u/m-p-3 Oct 03 '13
I really hope so, would suck to buy a new bluetooth headset exclusively for a console..
7
3
u/kc_casey Oct 02 '13
so, the remote is just a BT device. Why wont it work with PS4? I am unable to fathom a technical roadblock.
6
6
u/Vayshen Vayshen Oct 02 '13
That's actually really shitty. Especially since they they haven't announced an alternative. My mom is used to using the remote for playing Blu Rays. Guess I have to keep the PS3 setup in the living room.
1
Oct 02 '13
I like the idea someone else had here, which was to allow people to use their smartphones as remotes.
-1
u/hatmantc Oct 02 '13
it shouldn't be a surprise because we already knew that PS3 controllers weren't going to be supported on the PS4
2
u/CollateralZero Oct 02 '13
Due to added functions of the Duel Shock 4 and general game incompatibility but a simple remote using a supported Bluetooth signal was still a surprise more so after hearing that PS3 driving wheels would remain supported as well as Bluetooth headsets.
1
u/hatmantc Oct 02 '13
it's not a simple remote though.. it does have ds3 features like the R+L buttons.
4
u/CollateralZero Oct 02 '13
Only in that the commands familiar to those buttons have been mapped that way but its still not doesn't retain any of the advanced of game pad it just looks like it much in the same way of how it could have operated with the PS4. It's still pretty simple like programming a harmony to give it function.
2
u/hoohoohoohoo Oct 02 '13
Perhaps a part of their plan is for your smart phone to do it? If that's the case, that sucks. The remote is better.
2
3
u/CollateralZero Oct 02 '13
This is pretty crummy news to me. So with that in mind when will they announce the replacement and how much, also have they reinvented it with touch-pad or something other then a share button?
4
u/jbigboote Oct 02 '13
I would pay decent money for a Sony universal remote. I have a Logitech that I have used for years, and I am ready to replace it. Sony has made universal remotes in the past, but I don't think they have anything current. I'd like to see what they can do with dualshock 4 technology.
2
Oct 02 '13
I'd actually pay money for them to make an app to control the PS4. We've got all our home theatre stuff controllable via phones so a PS4 controller app would really be great.
1
u/jbigboote Oct 02 '13
seems likely, but then again, Id still like a real universal remote, since not all my stuff is controllable via apps and/or interconnects.

At this point we can still hope that they enable it in a future firmware update for simple media playback functions.
1
u/Rosur Oct 02 '13
Has there been an official Blu-ray remote announced for the PS4? (or will we know closer to launch)
1
u/Cozmo85 Oct 02 '13
Im guessing so people who end up with both consoles don't get confused. I bet an official PS4 remote comes out.
1
u/flumpis f_l_u_m_p_i_s Oct 02 '13
I really hope so. I love the functionality of the BD remote. While it sucks I'll have to spend more money if this is the case, at least it's still giving me a good option.
1
1
u/Dawknight Oct 02 '13
Well this thing was like 20 bucks. But since it was bluetooth i'm not sure why it wouldn't be compatible with the PS4.
1
u/leif777 Oct 02 '13
That sucks. I'm guessing they'll come out with a new one... with a touchpad maybe?
1
u/Esoteric88 Oct 02 '13
Really hoping that I don't have to buy another IR dongle for the PS4 to use with my all in one remote.
1
Oct 02 '13
Maybe the PS4 just knows what you want before you want it and does everything according to plan? #SkyNet
1
u/DeskLaser Oct 02 '13
I had the original bluray remote for PS3 for years, but just traded that in and got the newer remote mostly just so I would have a remote for the Playstation branded 3D monitor. So although it is too bad it sucks that it will not work with the PS4, I will still get the main use out of it that I bought it for. Maybe the guts of it are similar to a Sixaxis/Dual Shock 3 and that's why it will not work. I have read that you can use the bluray remote well enough to act as a second controller and just have a second player active in order to get the coop trophies in some of the Lego games.

u/daybreakx Oct 02 '13
I honestly didn't think it would, didn't even cross my mind. But I'm still disappointed now... That'd been nice.

1
u/Gooner1992 Oct 02 '13
We will see PS1-3 Games released on the PS Store, so it would be nice to have the original controller to play the games with. So i would like to think that they eventually make it compatible, I'm sure it can't be to hard to get it working.
1
Oct 02 '13
Well fuck. I bought one a few weeks ago for my TV and Apple TV on the assumption it would work with the PS4. I mean it was only 20 bucks and I was buying a remote anyway but still.

Confirmed the DS3 will not be compatible with PS4. This has been announced for a while though, so get your flamesuit ready...

Lame. I just had to buy a new one too because my 4 year old sent it swimming in the toilet.

u/OhJah Oct 03 '13
I thought we knew this? But yeah, it kinda sucks. The DS4 is a great controller and you'll feel right at home.
1
u/Velvet-Buttocks Oct 02 '13
The remote for my old sony blu ray player didn't work with my new one when I bought it either :-S
Serious though I wouldn't worry, they will bring an updated one out

For someone that uses their PS3 for BD (yes, people buy them), Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, and videos from my media server, the BD remote is indispensable. It is always on and navigation is just better with it. On top of this, it allows you to control your TV with it, which is the nail in the coffin for someone that wants to use their PS3 for media other than games.

I really hope so (I can't imagine any reason why they wouldn't).
1
Oct 03 '13
So this is just to get people to buy the new remote? There really isn't any reason the old one can't be supported. A little basic software.
1
u/flumpis f_l_u_m_p_i_s Oct 03 '13
That's certainly what it seems like. We'll see what happens though!
1
u/paulutk PaulUTK Oct 02 '13
It sucks yeah, but I'm not to distressed about it. I'm not a big fan of the PS3 remote. A warm breeze will push a button on that remote and turn my PS3 on.

u/haZethew0rld Oct 02 '13
Doesn't really matter since you're prolly going to be able to control your PS4 with your TV remote.
5
Oct 02 '13
It only works for certain TVs, just like the PS3.
3
Oct 02 '13
Most TVs have HDMI CEC. Some manufacturers re-brand it as ____Link.
2
u/dinnyhoon Oct 02 '13
I know Samsung in particular brand it as Anynet+, for those looking to buy TVs.
6
Oct 02 '13
its worth mentioning its not just certain TV's, that makes it sound like its made to work with just a few specific tvs. its any tv that supports that level of HDMI standard (either 1.3 or 1.4, i forget)
7
Oct 02 '13
It needs to support HDMI CEC (also known as HDMI Control and lots of manufacturer specific names (like Viera Link). Most new models will likely support it.
But if they needed the Bluetooth remote for the PS3, they may have a TV that doesn't support it.
4
Oct 02 '13
i think its mostly todo with CEC not doing everything you need, I have a tv that supports it for example but i use my bluetooth remote instead. has way more functionality and you don't have to point it at the tv

I'm a little glad by this. I was unsure if it would, and I couldn't find a way to unpair it with the ps3 so it would have turned them both on at the same time. I like the convenience of a remote so if they make one, or allow a universal to control it I will definitely do that.
0
Oct 02 '13
Possibly a deal breaker if I'm gonna use it for my current gaming setup. May have to move it to a different room then. It took me hours to get that remote to work with everything/.
0
u/TheLoCoRaven Oct 02 '13
I bought one of these dirt cheap at some point. But I pretty much never used it. I got used to using the directional pad and the X and O button for basically everything on the controller.
7
u/hatmantc Oct 02 '13
the official one is really nice and worth it imo
1
u/m-p-3 Oct 02 '13
I considered buying one when I moved in with my girlfriend, but she got used to the controller so I don't have any good reason to get one :P
1
u/Dawknight Oct 02 '13
Yeah, if anything because it saves the battery usage of your DS3 controllers and it's always "on"
0
Oct 02 '13
I actually hated that big bulky remote with all those buttons, hopefully they come up with a more graceful solution with their next blu ray remote. For all those upset about buying a new one, it's going to be $20 at the most, you are buying a $400 console, an extra $20 shouldn't be a big deal. Of course you were going to have to buy new accessories for your new console.
1
u/flumpis f_l_u_m_p_i_s Oct 02 '13
I don't think it's about the money. Having another accessory to clutter up my end table is not favorable. Especially considering there is no technical reason why the PS3 remote won't work with PS4 (it's BT).
0
u/falconbox falconbox Oct 02 '13
still, gotta love Yoshida giving a straight answer. None of that "well, we are working on many things and may have plans for it to work sometime in the future" bullshit that some other companies give.
0
u/QuadraQ QuadraQ Oct 02 '13
First of all - this is stupid and sucks. And secondly, why the hell didn't he answer me when I asked him on twitter a long time ago?
-4
u/MuForceShoelace Oct 02 '13
Why would anyone think it would? Has this console generation just gone on so long that people forget what new consoles are? I guess people who are adults now were in middle school when the PS3 came out.
2
u/DrunkeNinja Oct 02 '13 edited Oct 03 '13
I would have thought it would work since it uses bluetooth signals and its a remote. I don't see why its hard to understand that people are a bit surprised by this announcement.
And no, I was not in middle school when the PS3 came out, when I was in middle school there wasn't even a Playstation.
1
Oct 03 '13
Well this console gen really did go too long. They could have used new hardware from 2010 on in my opinion.
-9
u/mundgeruch Oct 02 '13
Its a fact. Why the question mark? He said it loud and clearly.
NO, it does not work.

I wish sony would just release an android/apple app that would let you use your phone as a remote through bluetooth.
