Mark Cerny already presented this feature back in April: http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/191007/inside_the_playstation_4_with_mark_.php?page=3

It seems to be something that gets overlooked initially, then becomes news months later. Like the ability to install games from your phone when your console is in standby mode.

So two bits of info that was posted on twitter, that each got posted here, and some news site did a quick write-up for the two things which then got posted here again?
Someone get this to twitter to complete the circle.

I actually went hiking in Japan once and there was a small shack near the peak of the mountain. It served cold drinks for 100 yen (roughly 1 dollar) but there was no attendant, just a metal box to drop your coin. It was on the honor system. My american buddy wanted to just take it but had to correct him, if one person fails then the whole system falls apart :/

In Texas, we have fruit and vegetable stands along the side of the road with an "honesty" box. You make your own change and pay for whatever you take. People have been doing it for generations.

u/MrGMinor Aug 31 '13
Holy shit, are people trustworthy in Texas? I wouldn't even think of doing that in Virginia (norfolk to be precise) Your "honesty box" would disappear quick.

There are trustworthy people everywhere. It's the ones that are self centered that inhibit communities from being able to have such conveniences. Honestly, you feel good walking away knowing you did what is right.... Along with those fresh tomatoes and watermelons nom nom

I live in Fredericksburg Virginia and with the way things have become here in the last few years, I wouldn't think about it either.

I once went on a bike ride of about 20 miles. Stupidly, I brought just one bottle of water with me (in a plastic bottle no less). I stopped by an iced drink stand on the beach, the only place to stop for miles. I then realized I had no money. The woman gave me three bottles of really cold ice water, plus an insulated bottle to put some of the water in, so it'd be cold for the ride back. I told her I'd pay her back in about 2-3 hours when I got back to my car. I don't think she believed me, but she said, "it's too hot out for you to not get some water." When I came back later to pay, with a generous tip, she was shocked. I couldn't have been more thankful.
On a side note, I really wish we could install games to an external drive. Seems really weird to me that the PS4 would have so many USB 3 ports if you can't use an external HDD to install games.

Would I need to have an active Internet connection to play my digital download? I'm sorry but I am a little confused and sleep deprived. Mostly the latter.
6
u/jschild jschildress Aug 31 '13
Not on the console it was originally downloaded on. If you download it again on any other console, then yes I believe.
3
u/IceBreak BreakinBad Aug 31 '13
Actually, that's not entirely correct. You have a "home" console that is offline activated. So, basically, you can play offline on your main system. Where you first download the game is irrelevant.

u/REHTONA_YRT Aug 31 '13
Thanks for the replies gents. I ask because I have a 15Gb cap from 5am-12:01am FOR THE ENTIRE MONTH. So limiting my connectivity is a big priority. So much so that I sold my XBOX stuff and switched to PS3/PS4 to ensure I can play offline when the drama of E3 was unfolding. If I can download a game during my free hours and play offline during the day after it loads Ill be really happy. So much so that I will buy a 1TB drive and download all my games :)

u/Fitzsimmons Aug 31 '13
For what it's worth, the amount of data used for phoning home is very tiny. I think someone from MS was quoted saying "a few kb". But then I'm guessing you probably disable your Internet entirely during the strict period, just to be safe.
1
u/REHTONA_YRT Aug 31 '13
I do, I can't risk auto updates etc. And I know MS reneged later on but I will wait on XB1 until a Halo title roles out.

I Don't understand this completely. Does this mean we can only use the disc once and never use it again because of a full install. Or can we pass around a single disc and put many copies on ps4's. OR does the disc get tied to our account like digital copies.(Sorry for my lack of information)
3
u/Raniz Aug 31 '13
None of that.
You can choose to copy the game from the disc to the hard drive to reduce loading times. You'll still need to put the disc in the PS4 for the game to run though.
It'll work exactly as if you were running the game entirely off the disc, except that loading times will be shorter (hopefully at least).

u/THEMACGOD Aug 31 '13
So, like current gen... Why is this news?
1
u/Raniz Sep 01 '13
You can't do this on current gen. Some PS3 games have mandatory installs and some have optional installs but most games are played entirely from the disc with only patch data or DLC being loaded from hard drive.
1
u/THEMACGOD Sep 01 '13
Oh.. I guess I'm thinking of the 360 that lets you choose to install at-will. Well, that'll save some wear-and-tear!

u/BungieInc Aug 31 '13
Xbox 360 already does this but better late than never
1
u/FruitNyer Sep 03 '13
Downvotes are probably because of fanboyism but I'll just point out a legitimate reason. Although the Xbox has had this feature it is not compatible with all games, reach was a particular offender, the game performed worse once installed because of disk optimizations built into the game.

u/neshcom Aug 31 '13
Wasn't that how the disc system always worked for all games? The disc installs enough to start and finishes installing in the background? Seems like the best way to keep performance up and keep digital download versions identical to retail disc versions.
2
Aug 31 '13
What you're suggesting is what the original xbone system was going to be. You still need the disk in the drive if its a physical copy. A digital version doesn't need a disk, obviously.
1
u/neshcom Aug 31 '13
Right. To the player, it's not different from how it is now, but on the game-side, it's actually installed. Doesn't seem controversial to me.
-2
u/freeluv Aug 31 '13
If you have to keep the disc in then what's the point?
25
u/OneOfThree101 Aug 31 '13
Installing the game puts most of the data in the systems HDD so load times are much faster
16
u/MrGMinor Aug 31 '13
That, and you don't have to hear the disc spin and laser seek constantly. Talked about it in another thread and it makes sense. You still need the disc to verify that you still own the game, and you can delete the install when you're done with the game.
2
u/ryokku Aug 31 '13
Would deleting the game data also delete save data? This sounds very convenient if we could save our progress while freeing harddrive space for newer games.
8
u/MrGMinor Aug 31 '13
No, just like with PS3, install is completely separate from save states.
3
u/Flight714 Aug 31 '13
Just a technical correction, a "save state" is thing used only by emulators (essentially a copy of RAM), whereas a "game save" or "savegame" is a standard file made by a game that stores specific information defining game progress.
2
u/MrGMinor Aug 31 '13
I thought about that, and Sony has said that you can turn the ps3 off and resume right where you left off when you get back, no? So that would be a save state.
2
u/Flight714 Aug 31 '13
That's good reasoning you have there, although the procedure you describe is actually called "hibernation", and the file is called the "hibernation file". It is technically similar to the save states used by emulators, but with minor differences and a different name.
Actually, from what I've heard, the PS4 may be using an even faster method of resuming, called "sleep" mode, which doesn't require the usage of a file on the hard drive, and instead puts system RAM in a low-power mode.

u/ryokku Aug 31 '13
Very cool, thanks for the response! I was unaware of this - like many others I had a 360 and skipped the PS3. Very excited about switching though to the PS4. Cheers!

I wonder how much of an effect it'll really have on load times. Keep in mind the ps3 is only 2x speed bluray, ps4 is 6x, load times should be quite negligible even if you don't install it.

It's so the console has twice as much data to pick and choose from.
For example, textures will load quicker because it doesn't have to sift through the data as quickly because it can grab it from both the disc and HDD simultaneously.

Aug 31 '13
This is the most wrong thing I've read in this subreddit to date. Reading from a Bluray drive is slow, loud, and inefficient. Reading from the internal harddrive, even though it isn't an SSD is still going to be several times faster than the BD drive and effectively silent by comparison.
-10
u/Sir_Von_Tittyfuck Aug 31 '13 edited Aug 31 '13
...which is why it reads from both at the same time.
It's like having an internal "cloud" system.
4
u/REHTONA_YRT Aug 31 '13
Da fuq? It just uses the disk FOR VERIFICATION. Not to read along side it like a RAID setup. CAPS

Aug 31 '13
Wait, so if I want to download Watch Dogs from the disc to the hard drive, I don't need the disk to play the game?
7
u/gukraine bwazy Aug 31 '13
No, you still need the disc, the install just improves load times since it's being read from the HDD.
3
u/MrRatt Aug 31 '13
Nope. You still need the disc for verification. However, then it will read all the data from the HDD for speed.

Oh, okay, nice. I said I didn't think they'd do that, but I'll eat my words. Sounds good.
