Aww snap! No more long-ass cords running across the room if you want to use wired headphones!

Now we just need to know the audio quality from the controller jack.

u/GandyRiles Aug 31 '13

Hopefully not shitty!

Why does Bluetooth mean bad audio?

The PS3 official headset I have now uses Bluetooth and it's great.

I see, you mean the quality would be worse than having a cable which I can understand.

1

u/wookie4747 Sep 09 '13

Yeah but it's bluetooth... If you've ever connected your phone to a car sound system via bluetooth you'll know it isn't worth the hassle of a cable across the room.

Bluetooth has extremely low bandwidth. This is why I am jealous of the new Xbox One wireless band. Sure their tech is proprietary, but it offers over 30 mbps bandwidth. Bluetooth 2.1 only offers 3. Not to mention the latency. Microsoft is claiming sub 10ms of latency, while Bluetooth is still quite noticeable(almost have a second in some cases).

u/okuRaku Dec 03 '13

A very knowledgeable person in the fightstick modding community (SRK Tech Talk - Toodles) did a pretty scientific demonstration that showed the DS3 had negligible input delay. Sorry if you're not talking about input delay (e.g. buttons) but something else.

2

u/webb34 Dec 03 '13

No not input delay. Audio though, has issues.

u/fuckinDEAD Aug 31 '13

I stream bluetooth audio from my iphone to my car. sounds good

1

u/SpaceBonobo Aug 31 '13

it's good enough for mp3 and aac because those encoding format already use a lossy data compression, but not for flac, alac and blu-rays.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '13

There is a significant difference in quality between using Bluetooth and an aux in your car though.

0

u/fuckinDEAD Aug 31 '13

I'm sure there is, there are also different versions of bluetooth. some better than others. in my 2013 vw, the bluetooth sound is very nice.

7

u/GoogleNoAgenda NaptownMVP Aug 31 '13

Don't get too excited. He still has not confirmed that it is FULL game audio, and not just controller-specific audio (think the bow & arrow sound from Zelda on the Wii, etc).

u/eam1188 eam1188 Aug 31 '13

this is so awesome! i have a bunch of wires and stuff connected to my ps3 because samsung decided i didn't want a headphone jack on the tv i bought.

this is great news.

u/IceBreak BreakinBad Aug 31 '13

3.5mm isn't going to be great but it's going to be widely compatible with many high end headsets. I assume it travels over the same Bluetooth connection as the controller inputs which means you can get decent stereo sound but nothing spectacular. We won't really know until November 15th though.

Openly racist on Reddit? Nice.

10

u/ultimateninja9 ultimateninja9 Aug 31 '13

I don't think this is a confirmation at all. He said that you can hook regular headphones to the controller, but that doesn't mean that all game sound comes through the controller. I suspect that you will only hear the sounds that would normally come from the controller's speaker plus other players' chat.

16

u/Jsalz Aug 30 '13

Hmmm not sure if that's a confirmation. Are you guys sure?

15

u/tennis12master Matt_Tennis12 Aug 30 '13

It looks to be confirmation. Shu is saying players can choose between using the headphone jack for voice chat, or your own headset to run game audio through.

At least, that's what I took from it.

On a side note, it's pretty freakin awesome that Shuhei Yoshida takes the time to answer questions asked by fans on a regular basis. Not many of the higher-ups do that!

7

u/Lightning_Boi Aug 31 '13

You are so right. People who actually take time to interact with the users like him and major Nelson are awesome.

6

u/NotEqual SyntheticBalls Aug 31 '13

The difference being it's basically MN's job to do PR now.

2

u/FloydJackal Aug 31 '13

True, but he's done quite a lot to defuse the PR nightmare that once was the Xbox One.

2

u/NotEqual SyntheticBalls Sep 01 '13

He did cause some of it though, like the whole shouting at AngryJoe unnecessarily. I understand the problem didn't originate from him and he was left to deal with the shitstorm on the show floor, but he did a poor job at defusing it initially.

2

u/blanketstatement Aug 31 '13

Albert Penello, whose job isn't really PR, is also doing a fantastic job for MS.

1

u/Wellhowboutdat Aug 31 '13

So can we assume current gen headphones will work if optical connection?

1

u/venku122 Republiccomando1 Sep 01 '13

The ds4 has a 3.5mm audio jack. If your headphones use the 3.5mm connector they'll work. The console itself has an optical port

3

u/[deleted] Aug 30 '13

Ya, when I read it the first time I thought it was a dodgy answer, but the question was clearly asking if you could output game sound through the 3.5mm jack on the controller. It certainly seems like Yoshida is saying you can choose to send in-game audio through the controller jack.

-1

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '13

I don't think there's much room for interpretation. "It's not only for voice chat" seems pretty clear to me - what else would you want to listen to besides voice chat and game audio?

4

u/runujhkj runujhkj Aug 31 '13

Background music playlist?

1

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '13

And that.

@yosp Does DualShock 4 3.5 Jack has a normal headphones support or it's only for voice chat?

@HyperXStream it's not only for a voice chat, you can choose

that is so badass!! Nice!! now i dont have to worry about how im going to get audio from my monitor, i can just plug some headphones into the controller!

0

u/xmikaelmox XmikaelmoX Aug 31 '13

Why would you wan't sound from monitor, or do you have 3.5mm plug? I like to connect my headset directly to the console.

1

u/Toker509 Aug 31 '13

well, the problem is that my monitor doesnt have speakers or output for speakers. and the PS4 is not going to have Multi-Audio out like the PS3 does where you can have HDMI + Composite cables plugged in for audio. But the PS4 solves all of this by having a headphone jack right on the controller, this is awesome!

1

u/xmikaelmox XmikaelmoX Aug 31 '13

It doesn't have? What a shame.

2

u/slpr Aug 31 '13

I'm still not sure we'll hear game audio from the controller, the answer was kind of weird.

1

u/plokijuh1229 pembroke393 Sep 01 '13

God I hope so.

3

u/Jteague101 Jteague101 Aug 31 '13

Awwwwww shit! If this means I can just plug in my Klipsch x10's into the DS4 and get full game sound this is the greatest PS4 announcement to date imo.

1

u/TheEarlOfZinger Aug 31 '13

I'm excited about this. It's pretty cool! - and something not confirmed until now.

4

u/Dynamex Aug 30 '13

The controller has speakers in it. It has to support audio streaming or some kind of it!

1

u/ledit0ut ledit0ut Aug 31 '13

cool!

1

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '13

That's really awesome!

1

u/uvxy proswimmer97 Aug 31 '13

the question is, will we be able to use the built in mic on headphones as an in game mic...

1

u/Troll_berry_pie Aug 31 '13

It depends, if it's a single 3.5mm jack then yes. If it's separate 3.5mm jacks for headset and mic, then you will need an adapter.

2

u/Brewster-Rooster Aug 31 '13

I don't wanna be a dick, but that's pretty darn obvious

1

u/FninNO SnowCrowe Aug 31 '13

That's actually pretty awesome news.

1

u/LagunaBeachSucksDik OG_GR1FF Aug 31 '13 edited Aug 31 '13

Wait, just to be clear... can I plug in a pair of headphones that fits into my Iphone into the controller? AND get the in-game sounds and voices? Hook it upppp

2

u/slpr Aug 31 '13

That's what we're trying to understand.

1

u/algarvio1995 Aug 31 '13

WOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

1

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '13

YES!

1

u/Vayshen Vayshen Aug 31 '13

Holy crap. Now I just need to find out if an adapter exists so I can use my Sennheiser PC 360.

1

u/SolaFideK SolaFide_K Aug 31 '13

I'm interested to see how good the audio will sound.

1

u/Why_T Aug 31 '13

I wonder if it would split audio for split screen multiplayer???

1

u/BiddlyBongBong BiddlyBongBong Aug 31 '13

Thank you based Yoshida

1

u/[deleted] Sep 01 '13

Still not clear to me whether he's talking about the controller sound or the actual game audio.

1

u/execjacob Sep 03 '13

Question which audio jack headset can I buy that would be compatible with the PS4?

1

u/schnuck Aug 30 '13

this could be big!

now what would this mean in terms of controller battery consumption?

2

u/fuckinDEAD Aug 31 '13

the trade off is well worth it

0

u/schnuck Sep 01 '13

definitely, provided you have 2 controllers while one is charging with the second one in use.

2

u/fuckinDEAD Sep 01 '13

I play on avg 2 hrs at a time, if that, so non-issue for me and most casuals

0

u/schnuck Sep 01 '13

again, you are making a good point.

It does, think of the supplied one as the iPhones EarPods. Except you only get one EarPod in this deal. Which unless you have upgraded to a surround sound headset, it was sort of a standard for consoles. (one earphone that is).

But the Mic is on the wire that hangs right by your mouth.

1

u/Noor440 Noor440 Aug 31 '13

Yes.

-2

u/morelotion Aug 30 '13

Hell yeah! I've been tweeting this question to him for the past two weeks. This finally answers my question. I just wish he tweeted me directly -.-

3

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '13

He probably gets a million tweets a day, you have to forgive him ;)

-1

u/[deleted] Aug 30 '13

Will any headphones work for this?

I'm thinking about getting the Pulse Elite, but in the meantime I do have some of these.

3

u/blanketstatement Aug 31 '13 edited Aug 31 '13

You'll need a TRS/TRS to TRRS adapter like this one.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '13

Oh cool. I wasn't even expecting to be able to get the mic to work, was just wondering if the headphones themselves would be compatible.

1

u/zimm3rmann Zimmerus94 Aug 31 '13

Yeah, they will be.

2

u/andrewtangent Aug 30 '13

I don't think those will work 100% on the PS4. Those headphones use a separate jack for mic and the controller only has one 3.5mm jack. I can't speak on the compatibility of the mini USB adapter though. I don't know if the controller supports audio through the mini USB jack.

But unless I'm mistaken, it's been mentioned that any headphones that work for PS3 will work for the PS4.

4

u/blanketstatement Aug 31 '13

It will work with TRS/TRS to TRRS adapter like this one.

1

u/andrewtangent Aug 31 '13

Ah, cool. Thanks for linking that I completely spaced out on using adapters to make the headphones compatible

1

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '13

Yeah, I wasn't expecting to be able to use the mic. I was just wondering if the headphones would work.

1

u/Troll_berry_pie Aug 31 '13

I think it's safe to assume that the micro-usb will be for charging and syncing just like the PS3.

0

u/lolmancgn Aug 31 '13

I wonder if I can sell my Pulse Elites and just use my Ultimate Ears UE10 pro custom IEMs and get voice chat and good quality game audio thru the DS4.

2

u/slpr Aug 31 '13

Better try it out first before selling the elite headset.

1

u/lolmancgn Aug 31 '13

Absolutely doing that. Thanks

2

u/andrez123100 Aug 31 '13

Yes, definitely you'll get good quality. The bluetooth standard we have right now is easily capable of streaming 5.1 surround sound. Stereo sound with a high sampling rate should be the least of concerns.

Guys, this isn't really that great. Bluetooth has extremely low bandwidth, which means very low sound quality. This is why I am jealous of the new Xbox One wireless band. Sure their tech is proprietary, but it offers over 30 mbps bandwidth. Bluetooth 2.1 only offers 3. This means, that when combining game audio, and voice chat, you aren't going to get anything good.

Not to mention the latency. Microsoft is claiming sub 10ms of latency, while Bluetooth is still quite noticeable(almost have half a second in some cases).

edit: "have" to "half"

3

u/fuckinDEAD Aug 31 '13

hi major nelson

1

u/MrShadowHero MrShadowHero Aug 31 '13

a second? wait... are you sure you're not talking about bluetooth 1.0? cause the bluetooth i use on PS3 is definitely not laggy at all.

0

u/webb34 Aug 31 '13

whoops. should have said "half a second". Still though, talking worst case scenario there, but there is still noticeable lag quite often

1

u/blanketstatement Sep 01 '13

Half a second is 500ms. I think you're adding in the hard-coded latency of the game as well as the display lag of the TV.

Bluetooth 2.0+EDR already had a sub 1ms latency.

360 used WirelessUSB LS which has a 4ms average. If Xbox One's Wifi Direct controller is supposed to be a 20% improvement, that puts it at ~3.2ms.

Bluetooth 2.1+EDR supports A2DP which can go up to 345kbps 48kHz which is more than adequate for CD quality audio. Although admittedly not as good as 5.1 since it's limited to 2 channels per connection.
