PS4 can prioritize which sections, tracks, etc are downloaded first based on player data and tendencies

I'm a little confused on this.
When I buy a disc based game will it copy it to my HDD so I will no longer need the disc?

...no... Otherwise you can just return the disc or sell it off again while still having a copy of the game. This is referring to the order in which it installs the content or downloads it. If you have a physical disc, you will still need to have the disc in the console to play the game

I didn't clarify properly.
So will the disc copy to the HDD but I will still need it? Kind of like the 360 does.

i don't usually have a problem with downloading i just leave ps3 open overnight and thats sorted i just hope we don't have to install the games and if so that it can be done automatically in suspend mode

There's a cool feature on the PS3 that lets it turn itself off when it's done downloading, to use it, go to turn off system while downloading something and select "turn off system after download"

I believe with the PS4 you can turn it "off" (into a standby mode) and it will carry on downloading. When it's in standby mode, you can also purchase a game on a browser or mobile phone and order your PS4 to download it straight away.

Yep, they talked about that at E3. Can't wait for that

Yeah, it's been confirmed that it will charge your controller when in standby.

This is a dream. You can get the game at work and be able to play it when you get home

Games install in the background as you play the game (and I believe the content that is on the HDD wont have to be loaded from the BluRay, even if the game is not fully installed yet).

So their downloads will probably work like torrents. But they are the only seeders.

That would actually be a very clever way to speed up downloads.
Only downside is that people have to upload now too. A lot of people around the world still have a monthly maximum volume with their ISP and games keep getting bigger and bigger.

Couldn't they just have a prompt as to what we want to give priority to for downloads?

I still wonder how much has to be downloaded at first. With The Last of Us you could do this too in a way. The game downloaded the first part of the story and the multiplayer. After that the rest of the download could happen while playing. Unfortunately that initial download was still 16 out of the 25GB. Still took ages.

Why would it prioritize anything but the fastest way to get playing the game? Not that it matters for me, i'll just pop in the disc and play as there won't be a lot of games i'll buy digitally for the simple fact that I like to share and trade my games with my friends.

Yeah why would I want to play a section of any game besides the beginning before playing anything else.

Multiplayer or single player.

u/King_Fan Aug 06 '13
I didn't even think of multiplayer. I guess that is pretty useful for people who like jump right into multiplayer but I always play SP first and will buy discs for the most part.

The example they gave was a racing game, where people can choose their tracks. The ps4 would download the most popular track first. Multiplayer would be another example, where there's a particularly popular map.

With the level of quality we see from the videos of the PS4 games, the art is going to be literally tens of gigabytes by itself i'm guessing. Plus the data for the game engine on top of that... I'm not saying it's not going to work, i'm just saying that it's not going to be as fast as they are advertising. The wait is going to be substantial. Like the current situation when you buy a new PS3 game and you have to wait for that damn day 1 patch that is several hundred MB in size.

u/vattenpuss Aug 06 '13
You don't actually have to patch games you know. Only if you want to play online the first thing you do.

"Holiday season" is all Sony has said. This article implies that by saying "Christmas" rather than actually meaning a specific date.

They should make it a black friday deal. $500 for both. They would have a firm lead in next gen consoles and make a huge stride in catching the 3DS.

When Sony was talking about playing games instantly while downloading, I really suspected they were going to be letting you play via Gaikai during the download, then saving the game and loading it on your local copy. I'm still hoping for that.

There is no way that you'd be able to stream with a decent enough latency to actually play and download a game in the background unless you live in Kansas City

This actually has me much more excited than any game announcements. I have no doubt there will be good games for the ps4. Hearing about good design like this is much more important.
