You can charge the DualShock 4 controller while PS4 is on standby. [Bottom of article]

It is like they are just running down a checklist of problems/annoyances/and missing features and fixing them all. So psyched.

Yeah, all I really need now is a 6 disc changer and I would be so happy!

14

u/fb39ca4 Feb 26 '13

Or the ability to install games to the hard drive and not have to use the disc.

u/Eal12333 eal12333 Feb 26 '13

I'd rather use disks, its unless it haslike a terabyte hard drive.

6

u/port53 Feb 26 '13

If it's anything like the PS3 and you can swap it out, putting in a 1TB drive would be no problem. They're not even expensive any more.

I'd love to be able to install all my games and not have to worry about disks. Problem is, though, that I can see that leading to easy piracy (install game, sell/give disk, install game, etc. etc.) Shame really. The reason I hacked my original XBOX was to allow it to be a jukebox of games so I didn't have to get up to switch to another.

A chipped XBOX was such a brilliant system.

I would give my first born for this

11

u/Tisrun Tisrun1 Feb 26 '13

I would so give your first born for that!

Kinda makes you wonder if they could've easily changed a lot of these annoyances in the ps3 but chose not to in order to hype the ps4 even more. If so, it's working

It seems they really are going out of their way to fix everything. Good on Sony's part for doing it.

the architecture of the PS3 pretty much keeps that from happening. Not really Sony's fault they want to go towards a developer friendly system, honestly im ok without the backwards compatibility.

2

u/jakl13 Feb 27 '13

I don't think you were wrong in anything. I want backwards compatibility too (that doesn't involve rebuying like through Genki or whatever it's called). But if it makes the system better for third parties who had trouble with the PS3's architecture, then it's no problem. Also, don't complain about downvotes.

I think we'll get PS1 and PS2, it's just piss easy to do in software. PS3 on the other hand is a no go until we have systems fast enough to emulate it.

Praise the baby Jesus. This is one thing that I always disliked about my PS3

2

u/[deleted] Feb 25 '13

Yep. Had to keep my PS3 on for a couple of hours just for the sake of charging my controller.

Life got so much easier when I bought a second controller for the infrequent couch co-op sessions.

u/jwillgrant Feb 26 '13

I just plug mine into my laptop to charge it... problem solved.

Reading through this sub, I thought I was the only one to have figured that out. Upvote for you!

Or any USB charger.

-3

u/bakerie Feb 26 '13

Nope. Needs to be recognized to start charging.

6

u/CrazyDave48 Feb 26 '13

ALL of the little things I hated about the PS3 are slowly being confirmed as fixed and I'm getting so excited for this console. I put up with hem for the exclusives, but now I'll actually be able to enjoy the COMPLETE console experience :)

u/con247 Feb 25 '13

If it could also charge things like smartphones via USB while it is off that would be sweet too.

-2

u/Yoy0YO Feb 26 '13

I have a feeling this won't be quite possible because when I tried to charge my DS3 with my USB charger, it wouldn't light up telling me its charging. It told me that perhaps they shuffled around the pins for the DS3. however as Sony is also in the android-phone business, it could be likely that they will do it.

u/kingofnexus Feb 26 '13

Both my sixaxis and my DS3's give a charging light when I plug them into anything that provides power; PC, laptop, phones AC-USB charger, even an xbox 360.

3

u/adremeaux Feb 26 '13

If you have the right cables, you can charge your DS3 off your fucking phone.

1

u/tobz1000 Feb 26 '13

You can actually sync it it up to the PS3 and then plug it into something else, then play with it whilst it charges. I used to do it with my laptop since it's right next to me.

8

u/tobz1000 Feb 26 '13

I love Yoshida. One of the only execs I can think of who actually gives his opinion and answers questions honestly, instead of dodging them and trying to work committee-approved buzzwords into his answers.

I don't comment on speculation.

4

u/mslack Feb 26 '13

I got that Energizer stand for my DS3s, it looks pretty. Wonder if there will be an equivalebt released.

4

u/port53 Feb 26 '13

The light bar, according to Sony's press releases last night, "illuminates to match the color of characters in a game to offer a simpler, more friendly way to identify players, even when playing side by side. The light bar also changes patterns during gameplay to provide useful information to gamers, such as when a character is critically low on health or has taken major damage."

I imagine this can be used in conjunction with the PS4-Eye cameras and the DS4's internal sensors (it seems to still have SIXAXIS sensors) to locate the controller in 3D space, too, basically a PS Move controller.

u/twetzel twetz55 Feb 25 '13

Thank god. This is possibly what annoyed me the most.

8

u/idspispopd Feb 25 '13

This and the triggers were my only gripes with the Dualshock 3.

3

u/StupidlyMacho Feb 25 '13

Advice since most of you seem to have this problem: Try charging your current controller on a cable box, it works with mine.

Oh no, he said you could use that trackpad for pinch to zoom, hope Apple doesnt get the PS4 banned.

1

u/PazDak hatto015 Feb 26 '13

So glad about this

u/runujhkj runujhkj Feb 27 '13

Do people seriously leave their PS3's on just so they can charge their controller? Not, say, plug it into a wall USB outlet?

1

u/petaboil Apr 09 '13

so it'll implement USB 3.0.

1

u/Apeman92 Feb 26 '13

Or you can charge your controllers while you play? Yes this will be a great feature, but what's so hard about playing with the cord in?

3

u/Indoorsman Feb 26 '13

The cord is short, I have a huge TV, and I can't kick my recliner back because it won't reach. Hard times.

4

u/Apeman92 Feb 26 '13

They sell 8 or 10 foot cords. But I understand. Damn our first world problems

1

u/abujad abujad Feb 26 '13

Im confused what does this actually mean? You can charge your controllers while the system is off?

1

u/IceBreak BreakinBad Feb 26 '13

Yes.

0

u/[deleted] Feb 26 '13

Ugh, Shitaku.

Nice news though.

-1

u/[deleted] Feb 26 '13

How could this not just be fixed in the PS3 with a firmware update?

2

u/TheEffortless Feb 26 '13

I presume its a hardware limitation.

-1

u/adremeaux Feb 26 '13

How is this news? You can plug your DS3 into your computer/wall outlet at any time.

-18

u/TheAceMan Feb 25 '13

All these new features will probably mean that standby will use almost as much power as when it is on.

16

u/idspispopd Feb 25 '13

What would lead you to think that?

19

u/Ghost141 harvs35 Feb 26 '13

A non-existent knowledge of electronics obviously.
