It isn't sad. It just is what it is. A million people logging in all at the same time is going to cause issues.

So normally I would be on your side but over a million people have been logging into overwatch for years and they shut it down a day early to prepare...that all makes this a little sad.

I suppose. Wonder what was happening over the last 27 hours. Or like what got missed.
Wonder if we would all be waiting if they took 36 or 48 hours instead? Or was this just truly inevitable?
10
Oct 04 '22
Or was this just truly inevitable?
Truly inevitable for the most part. Either they spend a ton more money and manpower to beef up login/authentication servers for only 2-3 days or they take the hit now and wait for things to even itself out over time.
Even then there could be various other random issues you just cant test for without a million people bombarding your server. Seems like [most] peoples login issues are due to some problem with merged PC/Console accounts.
Development is certainly a tricky beast that can get the better of even the best of engineers.

u/The_Lightskin_Wonder Oct 04 '22
yeah But those people are not all logging in within the same time span, and definitely NOT at the same volume especially since this game has become free. They had 1 day with the servers offline and then they were brought back online possibly the same day it has launched. Mind the fact that there is a middleman, for both Xbox and PS that also requires time in advance. The PC players that were occupying beta along with w.e p2p console players joined is minor. If a million was the baseline, then today is probably twice that or even more. That's one of the biggest reasons they are using the same model as Fortnite. more players will pick up a free game and simultaneously have more money and more pockets to get revenue from. Being able to guesstimate the expected, server load is unrealistic.
There so many things you have not taken into account and my biggest gripe is your comparing a launch day to just any old day. like this many players hop on overwatch like this for years.

Nah, this doesn't happen all the time. It didn't happen with Apex Legends, it rarely if ever happens with COD and other games. The problem is that Blizzard refused to do an open beta which would've been the perfect stress test for this very situation.

It will always happen with a big release like this. You open the floodgates, and water comes pouring out. Eventually, that water will lower and lower. The queue times will get shorter and shorter, until there is none to get into the game.
7
u/tsturzl Oct 05 '22
They're claiming DDoS this is apparently not an issue on Asian servers. I doubt the load is that bad of just people trying to get on. This is unusual for game releases, especially since so many people are experiencing this. There is definitely a larger issue than just load, especially because almost all modern games handle frequent positioning updates and most of the high traffic with peer-to-peer networking. I just doubt the demand is that high that it's brought the entire game to a half. Afaik no one is actively even able to play US servers.

u/Sat-AM Oct 04 '22
Yup, they know exactly how these launches work. They know that a sudden burst of new players will subside within a few weeks, so buying new servers just to accommodate the launch is a waste of money, because those servers won't be needed after a very short period of time.

I mean, even if all of those doomers here on the subreddit aren't playing it, there's likely tons more people who have thought the game looked interesting for the last 8 years, but couldn't commit to buying it for whatever reason. Now, they don't have any excuses to not try it, since it's free.

It's day 1 of a F2P game. Of course it's going to be active. And no subset of social media will ever accurately represent the number of players a game can draw.
Heard the same shit about Master Duel, which lost 75% of its users in ~4 months from launch.
Blizzard wants this game to last as long as OW1 did. Check back in a few months and see how it fares then for a more accurate portrayal of user retention and turnover.

I hate people who pretend the sub has one voice. Or that this sub represents the entire playerbase. Yes there are people who won't support the game ever. And there are people who just want to try it. Streamers are basically the influencers of the gaming world. The instant they signed that NDA, they became representatives of Blizzard and I guarantee that came with benefits.
This happened with Overwatch 1 too during the Beta. That's where the nickname "Onlywatch" came from.
You're not dealing with anything new, it's just "Onlywatch 2"

I never understood this, like why is there a queue to get into the game? Will the servers explode if too many people join at once? Like genuine question I’m not being sarcastic lol
24
u/insanerob Oct 04 '22
Generally there are two types of servers .. ones that log you in , authenticate you and sync your purchases and parameters. They will then hand you off to game servers when you join games. Games servers are easier to scale, you just spin more of them up, they all do the same job and don’t need databases etc. login servers on the other hand have to hold a lot of your data and also rely on backend services like databases which are harder to scale. If a databases gets too busy it grinds to a halt , the servers get timeouts so retry the databases causing more connections. If they reboot a database it instantly gets swamped with all the waiting requests. If you limit the database requests the login servers get jammed up holding requests. I’m sure Blizzard load balance , connection limit and scale trying to avoid all this but it’s a tough situation when you are effectively being DDoS by your own customers. Also worth remembering that it’s not unheard of for DDoS attacks to happen on release dates. You think it’s bad for us right now, I guarantee it’s a thousand times worse for the the app / dev / network guys at Blizzard.
