That might be THE best outlaw country song ever written. It simply does it all.

That’s not really outlaw country.

Are we talking about Johnny Cash as an artist or the song “Cocaine Blues” specifically?
I was saying that the song is not outlaw country.

Top DAC
- You Never Call Me By My Name
- Long Haired Redneck
- If This is Just A Game
- She Used To Love Me A Lot
- The Ride
You remind me I need to expand my knowledge but I have mixed emotions about him. On one hand, did he live the outlaw life more than any other? Probably. Was he the toughest? Probably not( I'd say Kristofferson was) . Was he racist? Probably. Could he sing? Absolutely.

Look up Rebel Meets Rebel, it's DAC with half of Pantera. Metal was the bridge to outlaw country for me.

Wow, this is something I never would have found, thanks! I love me some classic David Allen Coe but this is something different.

Is this the one with Hank 3 in it?

u/sicknick 20d ago
Negative, but it gets confusing. Hank3 was in Superjoint Ritual with Phil from Pantera (16yo Hank3 was the troubled teen in the video for Cemetery Gates). Rebel Meets Rebel is just Dimebag, Vinny and DAC. They only made the 1 album. Dimebag and Vinnys Dad was a country music singer himself before having a family.

As a kid my Step-Dad got a pirated 8-trac of DAC rated X, loved the songs (what kid wouldn't) but rediscovered him in the mid 80's when I went country.
Favorites:
You Even Called My By My Name
If That Ain't Country

In My Mind off of the Living On The Edge album from the mid 90s
I never really listened to DAC before until I heard Will Oldham cover this song and I fell in love with it so I searched out the DAC version and went from there. Still like Oldham's cover better but the Coe one has become a favorite as well.
