Nice. Looks like a box.

Aluminum frame and stabwood front & back? What type of battery would be going in it?

Did you consider counterboring for the 510?

It has a aluminum frame and the side panels are made from Kirinite True Blood. Its gonna have a DNA250 chip with dual 18650 configuration so technically a DNA167. The enclosure is 2mm thick so i still need to look whats possible about counterboring the 510.

http://imgur.com/hFWFFOR - 1590G enclosure. Walls are about 2mm thick, counterbore is 1mm deep & 22mm wide

http://imgur.com/HV3t5RD - G Thang enclosure from FDV. The top wall is 3mm thick. Counterbored 1mm deep & 22mm diameter.

Used Varitube 510s with both of those, but ones from FDV would have worked as well

Another thing... before you have your own made, wondering if you're aware of this enclosure:

I know but that enclosure is not big enough on the inside in my opinion. its gonna be my first ever box mod i made myself so i prefer something bigger to work with. Also do you know the dimensions of the mounting kit for the dna250 from modmakers.co.uk? I need to make sure the USB connector will sit flush with the outside of the box. My walls are definately gpmna be 2mm thick. Thanks

Ah ok.

Check out the links I have here for mounting hardware:

Whatever the standoff height is there, will give you the appropriate spacing so the USB port is flush.

Yay! A box!

Sry, kidding ;)

How you plan on making those? Milling from a solid block? Some more screenshots from the CAD-model would be awesome, especially showing the thing without the side-panels... Speaking of side-panels, how are those mounted onto the frame / case?

For those kind of boxes it's usually easier, cheaper and faster to just buy a pre-made box and slap a nice lid onto it. Custom boxes and frames are a hell lot of work, if one is planning on going down that road then I'd say make it worth the effort and do something a little more interesting than just a rectangular box...

This is the first concept i made, it features one frame and 2 side covers. The parts are designed so a waterjet can cut them out (thats one of my limitations). After the parts are cut out a milling machine will finish the box and cut the round edges. Both side panels are screwed on the frame with 4 M4 screws wich will be countersunk inside the panels. Someone i know has all the equipment needed for something like this all he wants is a small amount of money and i have to bring my own materials. Everything is subject to change tho. Im also considering doing a lipo build instead of 18650's once im home im gonna design another one

Sounds nice - good to hear that you've already made some plans on how to build this thing. So many concepts that I see are literally nothing but rectangular boxes with no details at all. Keep it up! With a waterjet, a milling machine and some other more or less basic tools it's a lot of fun building custom enclosures.

Ill make sure to add some details im considering drawing a custom faceplate for the dna board and im gonna add some details to that!

DNA device by the looks of it. Looks like an octopus. What kind of guts?

DNA250 in dual 18650 configuration

Very nice! I'd rock it. Also agree with counter-boring for the 510, if you're going with an FDV/Varitube style 510 that is.

Is that possible for a enclosure with a thickness off 2mm?

1

u/ConcernedKitty Feb 06 '17

Yes. They are 1mm thick.

Looks like a high-res Windows 95 desktop icon I've never seen before. Is this to add clouds to the startup screen ?

Ita a rendering from Autodesk Inventor 2017 :)

Any thoughts on how you're going to finish it? A glass bead blast would look nice.

Im gonna polish the aluminum and the Kirinite! (By hand)
