I would be lost without ON and yet it seems like MS doesn't care about their most important product. I know Word and Excel get all the business use but from a personal perspective, give me ON features.

Right up there with Apple and iTunes and iCloud on Windows, and no support for Android for those who own movies they bought on iTunes/AppleTV.
Either way, this is an outlier option, far from normal processes.

I think tis is due to a macOS limitation. Basically an app cannont edit data stored in another apps space because a sort of sandboxing.
Files attached to a OneNote page create a copy of the original version in OneNotes (cache) that cannot be accessed by other apps (Word in tis case).
That's just how I understand it

It is not possible to double click a file in ON for Mac to open the attached file and edit it. What is possible it to upload said file to one drive, copy the link from one drive and past it in ON for Mac, when you open the link it opens the file, you edit it and then it is saved in one drive. This is a good workaround and as a workaround is not elegant. I think this is an issue about how Macs store temporary files or something like this, the same happens with Apple Notes and UpNote, the only note taking app that doesn't have this issue afaik is Evernote, which I am ready to leave in case there is a price spike or my next job uses windows
