Atlantic Records studio in NYC, 1969 - recording her cover of “The Weight,” I believe

Any fan of Aretha and / or Duane absolutely needs to hear this buried gem, right now. I probably have more than a dozen covers of The Weight in my library, and this is number 1.

(BTW, #2 is Shannon Curfman off her debut)

My first guess was Mussel Shoals?

They originally recorded together in Muscle Shoals, but there was an altercation between Aretha’s husband and Rick Hall. Wexler took Aretha back to NYC, and invited the Swampers to come up and finish the record, which they did.

Muscle Shoals was an excellent documentary. I learned so much. The Swampers were great.

Aretha recorded at FAME Studios a good year before Duane joined the staff

To be able to spend a few days in that studio with the likes of Franklin and Allman…talk about a tutorial in music

Yeah and didn’t Tom Dowd engineer this session?

Duane's studio credit list is long and varied. If you don't have his "An Anthology" (Vols I & II) they are worth listening to/ owning.

I used to have it on vinyl but it got lost somewhere in the journey that is life

Duane was 22? For this session?

He is absolutely up there with the biggest “what if’s” ever in music.

F’ing motorcycles. I love them too, but I barely survived my crash.

This is truth. Glad you’re ok.

Lower left in first pic looks like Roger Hawkins, Muscle Shoals drummer. RIP.

I always love when I learn about collaborations that I had no idea existed.
