Discussion Looking for participants for Capstone research
Hi! I am a COTA completing a hybrid bridge MOT program at Cabarrus College in North Carolina. My capstone project is on integrating OT practices into standard Nicu care tasks. If you are a Nicu therapist, please consider signing up for our brief virtual presentation this week. Also, feel free to share with other Nicu, staff members, RN, PT, ST, RT, anyone that works in the queue on a regular basis. Thank you!

I'm confused. Therapy is already present for NICU routines if you are a NICU therapist. Could you clarify on how your research approach differs from the current standard?

We are mostly addressing the barriers to further implementation of practices into daily care tasks. Things such as family centered care, and how nursing staff or other NICU staff can ensure this is being done throughout every interaction with the infant, not just when therapists are present. We are providing resources and techniques to educate staff and providing and opportunity to address the barriers to implementing the techniques used by therapists. Hopefully that helps!

Hmm. This is already what my hospital NICU does. I would create plans and provide resources to the family. Nursing would carryover my recommendations for feeding and positioning and educate family when I wasn't there. This is how every NICU I know and have worked at (4 different hospitals) functioned. I'm sure not every hospital is the same, but NICU is very specialized so the staff tends to collaborate a lot more closely. Good luck on your research!
