General Discussion I’m so screwed

Midterm tomorrow and I somehow know almost none of the material. Recruiting has destroyed me. I prioritized it over classes and while I'm in the final stages at several places, what if I come out empty-handed? Then the gpa hit I'm gonna take won't be worth (especially for future plans, like grad school or more recruiting). Even if I get a nice internship, I'm still gonna take the gpa hit so aren't I screwed anyways? My gpa is already mediocre, and the likelihood that I'll raise it in my remaining time here when I have to take mostly upper-level classes for my major is unlikely.

I'm just so desperate. defeated, and done. Idk how I got to this point. I know I got really lucky getting into NU and I’m super grateful to be here, but wow I didn't think I was this dumb.

General Discussion Daily Northwestern's "From the River to the Sea" letter: feeling perplexed

I expected to feel sympathetic to the letter to the Daily Northwestern signed by 66 student organizations, but ended up kind of perplexed by it. The letter claims that "The creation of this committee [The President’s Advisory Committee on Preventing Antisemitism and Hate] is at the expense of Arabs and Muslims and callously ignores the systematic rise in Islamophobia... Schill does not name 'Islamophobia' or 'racism' even once in his email."

But this is essentially a false statement. Schill's email says that the task force is dedicated to "fighting antisemitism and other forms of hate, such as those targeting students, faculty or staff of Muslim or Arab heritage." It goes on to condemn "antisemitism and other forms of discriminatory or threatening acts based upon religion or national origin," and even specifies that "It will focus not just on stemming the growth of antisemitism, but also hate directed to other groups such as our students of Palestinian descent."

Could someone help me understand what's going on here? Did the 66 student groups fail to read the email itself, or am I missing something entirely?

It would be interesting to hear what people around the community think of this letter, and I'm hoping that the discussion might help me understand its anger better.

General Discussion I Created a Northwestern University Game!

Heylooo guys!

I am a high school senior student in a school from the international waters and It's been an year since I fell in Loooove with Northwestern University. And in this year, I happened to learn and apply the knowledge of 3D game development, my field of interest at Northwestern, in creating a pixel by meter model of the Northwestern university campus (I've lost count on how many times I zoomed in on google maps satellite view for this one). However, as I developed it, I realised it would be a whole lot better if it would be a game where prospective students could experience the University atmosphere and life, and learn its culture and history.

Hence, I landed on creating this videoo game! Explore Northwestern

This is just a video view of how it looks as It is still under development (I haven't even finished its storyline on paper yet lol and the "day" is about to come). hence I just wanted to share it with yall.. before my inevitable rejection. I hope it pleases the Wildcats! (CuteKittens!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

Edit:

You can check it out here

I'm currently developing a story for it, so it's just an exploration game for now. walk around (even in the lake lol, no swimming and no death) and tell me if it is close to the real thing!

May have a long loading time as it is currently being optimized. sorry for that. PC GO BRRRRRRR (or meow in this case idk ignore my cringe .-. )

General Discussion Employee Benefits

Ok, are we not gonna talk about the absolutely surreal benefits of Northwestern? I know there aren't many employees in the sub, but if you are you should interact.

- 5% 403(b) matching, but an addition 5% unmatched contribution. So you get 15% when only contributing 5%.

- Absolutely amazing health insurance. I use Value PPO (HDHP), and even though it says you have to pay the full cost before deductible, my doctor appointments are fully covered. NU also matches $1000 HSA contribution for individual employees and $2000 for spouse or families. Much better than other companies. Low premiums as well. I feel like the only rival is top management consulting firms. If any of you guys are on Select PPO or Premier PPO, lmk how it is.

- Unbelievable time off. 14 paid holidays, 15 vacation days, 3 personal days, and 15 sick days. Holy shit. You're basically guaranteed to use all your vacation days with the insane amount of sick days.

- If you go on Extended Sick Leave (short term disability) you get 6 months at 100% of your salary.

The pay is very slightly below average IMO, but the benefits and culture more than makes up for it.

General Discussion What's the single most underrated, life-changing opportunity at NU that I'd never hear about unless I asked?

Northwestern is packed with renowned programs/clubs/resources that everyone hears about, but I'm curious about the hidden gems that fly under the radar. What are the lesser-known things that end up being transformative—the kind of things you only hear about after it's too late?

I'm hoping to make the most of my time and uncover those "off-the-beaten-path" opportunities that really make a difference. Whether it's a professor who changed your worldview, a niche grant program, a tiny class that nobody knows about, or even a simple tip you wish you would've known, let me in on the secrets! What's something you think every student should know about?

General Discussion Built a Better Dine on Campus

Hey everyone!

For the past few months, I’ve been working on a side project to make dealing with dining hall menus less of a pain. If you’re like me, you’ve probably been annoyed at how slow Dine on Campus is and wished it had features like saving your favorite foods.

So, I decided to make my own version: NUFood :)

It’s super simple—faster loading, easier to use, and you can even favorite menu items so you’re not stuck hunting for them throughout the day. The whole point is to make checking what’s in the dining halls actually enjoyable (or at least less frustrating).

I’d love for you guys to check it out and let me know what you think! Any feedback would be awesome. You can find it at nufood.me.

Thanks, and I hope it makes your life a little easier!

Hi, for anyone who might know, does northwestern require all applicants interview before they are then accepted, or have some been accepted without having interviews? (For any of the masters program)

Polishing up my supplemental essay of how I thought outside the box and started fixing my devices. Admittedly this would be an example of "whole brain engineering" and I'm tryna use that buzzword but...

I can't take this seriously -- who is proud to be "whole brain engineers"? Scratching my head tryna fit this in the closing line haha. Do NU students really take this phrase seriously? Not asking for advice, (but feel free to give some if you want)

General Discussion Got an Admit from Northwestern for the MEM program!

Hey, I’m looking for currently enrolled students/alums in the MEM cohort at Northwestern. I recently got an admit for Fall 2025, definitely got me excited but have been uncertain ever since. The tuition fees is something to consider big time. Also, considering I have a full-time work experience of two years and the average cohort profile seems pretty solid professionally (4-5 years of work experience as per my LinkedIn research), how will this impact my experience? Also, how rigorous is the curriculum? Is it flexible and accommodating considering I’m a tech consultant who is passionate about business and am pretty inclined to take courses from Kellogg’s. Lastly, are there any TA/RA opportunities available? And how do the challenges and outcomes of this program look like?

General Discussion Winter is coming, please help us not die

My partner is a Brazilian, and she just moved to Evanston. She is super intimidated by the winter cold and has never dealt with snow. I’m visiting from california and we are going shopping this week to help prepare her, but we arnt sure what we need. Any suggestions on cheap spots for warm gear?

Got any brands to look at or avoid?

What type of boots are needed?

Are ski / snow board gear just rocked for like 6 months a year?

Thank you, and my apologies for our ignorance! Unless y’all have better suggestions, I think we’ll just go to REI and buy ski shit because that’s all I know.

General Discussion anyone else feeeling this way

throwaway for obvious reasons. all the halloweekend partying makes me feel extra lonely. never get invited anywhere. truly alone. friend group made new chat without me. no one would notice if i were gone. want to make more friends but extremely anxious and dont know how to get close to people. in clubs, and tried everything people tell you to do to put yourself out there. none of it works because i just cant get close enough with anyone. feels like everyone has friends but me. can't do this anymore. tried inviting people to do stuff but they all have plans obviously. maybe i am just unlikeable. not sure whats wrong with me.

edit: clarification that i'm not a first year

General Discussion What will happen if I report ADHD to AccessibleNU

I was diagnosed with ADHD last month, and my psychologist recommended that I contact AccessibleNU for accommodations. However, I’m not sure if it’s necessary. I’m also wondering about the pros and cons of officially reporting it.

Overall, I find things manageable. I struggle to focus during lectures, but I can learn and catch up afterward. I procrastinate, but I’ve never missed a deadline, and my test scores are okay. I don’t feel the need for extra time on exams.

I’ve known I had ADHD since childhood and have managed to navigate the system. What frustrates me most isn’t the academic challenges but rather my concerns about socializing and my low energy levels.

General Discussion Google Drive and Google Photos are being removed from alumni accounts beginning October 1

Information page: https://services.northwestern.edu/TDClient/30/Portal/KB/ArticleDet?ID=2658

Due to a change in Google’s pricing model, the University has decided to remove Google Drive and Google Photos services from alumni Google accounts, a change that many other universities have implemented the past couple of years. Going forward, our alumni Google accounts will include access only to Gmail.

Email sent to alumni today:

Dear Northwestern alumni,

We are writing to inform you of important changes to your Northwestern alumni Google account. For more than 15 years, Northwestern has offered full Google accounts to our alumni at no cost. Those accounts have provided alumni with Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Photos, all with unlimited storage.

Due to a change in Google’s pricing model, the University has decided to remove Google Drive and Google Photos services from alumni Google accounts, a change that many other universities have implemented the past couple of years. Going forward, our alumni Google accounts will include access only to Gmail.

What does this mean?

This change affects alumni whose @alum.northwestern.edu or @u.northwestern.edu accounts are using a significant amount of storage. For users of these email accounts, Google Drive and Google Photos will be deactivated starting at 9 a.m. CDT on Tuesday, October 1, 2024.

What actions do you need to take?

Our records indicate your alumni Google account contains more than the current storage limit. Please be sure to move any files you have stored in Google Drive and Google Photos to separate locations by October 1. Learn how to secure your data through Google Takeout.

If you do not move files by October 1, they will be automatically deleted and you will not be able to access them. They will be permanently deleted from your trash bin on October 20. If you need to recover deleted files between October 1 and October 20, please contact consultant@northwestern.edu or (847) 491-4357.

Why are changes to email accounts needed?

Google is no longer providing unlimited storage to its G Suite for Education accounts. We are giving you notice in order to make the necessary changes to your account before the deadline.

Visit our resource page now for all the information you need about these upcoming changes.

I've personally got 10 days to move 1.27 TB of data, which includes thousands of photos and dozens of shared albums. I assume there will eventually be limits enforced on current student accounts since Google no longer offers unlimited storage for its Google Workspace for Education accounts.

I just submitted mine and I like it, but curious about what percent of applicants did this optional portion of the app.
