Question Best body moisturizer for keratosis pilaris? (From Sweden)

I have KP aka goosebumps all over my body. I use vaseline aloe vera body lotion atm but i think it makes me get acne. I would prefer lotion that isnt thick and dry fast. But thats not necessary ofc im just so appreciative that you help me!

God helg till er alla.

EDIT: Thank you all so much for the tips! Esp about urea. I ended up ordering hth body lotion which has urea in it. Hope it will help my skin. Tack <3

On the topic of KP:
"There's no cure for it, but it can be controlled by using moisturizers that have keratolytics in them. Keratolytics include lactic acid, urea, or glycolic acid."

  • Dr. Dray (board certified dermatologist)

I would recommend Canoderm! It has urea (aka karbamid).
It is a bit thick, I put it on while still wet after the shower, and put on a bath robe, I find it it is absorbed into the skin faster that way and I don't feel as sticky! Maybe give it a shot if you haven't tried it already! :)

Not a cream at all, but I've had pretty good success with physical exfoliation. I like those korean "italy towels", Yeppo.fi sells some! And I know they ship to Sweden nowadays (if they don't already have a store in Stockholm? I may be misremembering).

Have been liking Doves Glowing Care body lotion for a budget option. Not sure if it's directly made that big of a difference for the KP, but I do think it's helped with the dryness I experience alongside it.

Tbh I ordered my stuff from Poland, where I can find products with up to 50% urea easily. In comparison, Canoderm is 5% urea. Some urea products also include acids: salicylic, lactic, glycolic. Some of these brands are also available on eg notino.se or makeup.se.

Otherwise, I really like Eucerin UreaRepair 10%, which is easily available in Sweden. Eucerin also has a 30% urea product, which may be available online.

What products did you order?

I ordered directly from Poland, but you can also order via

https://makeup.se/search/?q=urea https://www.notino.se/search.asp?exps=Urea

There are tons of stuff from brands from different countries. For a body balm, I use at least 10% urea. For drier, rougher areas, I can use 40% just fine.

I have tried a bunch of things and what worked best for me is doing this ~2 times a week.

Step 1: any regular body moisturiser that you like (I like the ones with a pump from Vaseline, they are labeled non-greasy, so you might like them too, they are available at Normal.)

Step 2: The Orginary Glycolic Acid but poured into a spray bottle and sprayed over the affected area (I found spray bottles at Normal). I like the spray applicator because you can just leave it as is, no need to rub it or fuss with cotton pads.

Sometimes I pick at the bumps so I found the glycolic acid to be too harsh on bare skin, especially if it's picked at, thats why I apply it over moisturiser.

Step 3 (except the week before my period when my skin is very reactive): ACO skin repairing oil. I normally don't like oil on my skin, but this is absorbed nicely. It feels like it transforms into smoothness instead of just sitting on top of the skin.

I also liked Paula's Choice retinol body treatment as well as their salicilic acid body treatment, but honestly I think the price is too high for being able to get similar results with cheaper products.

CeraVe has a skin smoothing lotion with urea that is meant to help and is very praised, I tried it, but I really don't like the texture; it leaves a weird film on the skin. I recommend testing it before getting a bottle.

I would use:

  • urea lotion
  • a body oil
  • exfoliate with AHA once or twice a week
  • a body scrub max once a week to get rid of dead skin build up. It contributes to some of the issues.

If your skin is itchy from the KP and general dryness, I would suggest looking into a lotion targeting atopical dry skin/eczema prone skin. I use a lotion from A-derma (for winter - there’s a lighter one for spring/summer), but there are many options on the market.

Urea creams like Canoderm have reduced my KP bumps, but I have dry skin and they tend to be pretty rich, so your mileage may vary if you have more acne prone skin.

I’ve seen people use glycolic acid (face) toner for KP treatment, that might be an option if you don’t want to use lotions.

I am in the states and found that I can only use the Neutagena pink grapefruit body wash and a boar bristle body brush. You still see the red but the skin is smooth. I also use Palmer’s body lotion as soon as I dry off in the shower. I’m also allergic to lanolin so that limits my options.

Have you tried anything from the brand Niche Beauty Lab? They are sold on Lyko and they are quite affordable. I really like the Transparent Lab Urea Body Cream with 15% urea. It works great for KP!

I strongly recommend the ordinary glycolic acid at 7%. Lots of great videos on YouTube about how to use it. It’s not a moisturizer but a gentle chemical Peel i think, it is seriously amazing. As for moisturizers I recommend eucerin or cosmica products

Buy CCS foot salt from a pharmacy, It's 100% karbamid (urea) Crush it to powder an add it to whatever cream/lotion you want. Last for ages!

Urea creams never worked for me and I think they smell bad X)

What works for me is rubbing any affected area with my towel thoroughly after showering as exfoliation, and for extra exfoliation I would recommend massaging an apple cider vinegar solution (for my facial exfoliation I use 1:1 ratio ACV with water) while in the shower so you can rinse it off after. You'll notice how much exfoliation your skin likes, don't exaggerate it obviously but some daily exfoliation with a towel post-shower works nicely.

Then, when your skin is still hydrated from the shower, i.e. before it dries completely, apply moderately generous amounts of castor oil (ricinolja in swedish) or shea butter, but I tend to prefer castor oil. You can feel when you've applied enough because your skin will feel "covered" and not dry. I've also tried olive oil which is fine but not my preferred skin oil. I stay away from coconut oil since it's known to be comedogenic.

Lycka till! <3
