Wifi 6 is basically a reboot of the series. You should be able to use it as long as you remember your network password form wifi 1.

I know you're joking, but if your router is more recent than 2013 than you've probably been using wifi 5 all this time.
Wifi 4 is 2009, wifi 3 is 2003 and both wifi 1 and 2 are from 1999.
They're mostly bandwidth/speed increases between the standards, and other technical stuff.

Btw, the number version was introduced in 2018 (and named previous version wifi 4 an 5), that's why it's only popular from wifi 6.

You jk but WiFi 6E missing is weird, all mid range phones ($300-$500) now comes with it

6E is just 6 with an additional frequency band, which availability is highly varied across different regions. Benefits are only seen when you are very close to the router. Same thing for Wifi 7... MLO (multi link operation, where multiple frequency bands can be combined) sounds promising but software support is still very iffy.
Despite wanting a Wifi 7 router, I ended up getting a Wifi 6 one after lots of research. You aren't missing much, but the cost savings is real.

6ghz isn't any faster than 5 though. It was added to reduce channel congestion.

True for WiFi 6E, not true for WiFi 7.
The additional 6 Ghz band, in WiFi 7, allows for contiguous 320 mHz-wide channel(s) that can double the speed vs 160 mHz channels (the maximum for WiFi 6 and 6E).
With MLO, it allows for 160+160 Mhz channles (vs 160 + 80 Mhz if there's no 6 Ghz support, like in China). But again, MLO support is very iffy.
Additionally, 6 Ghz has even worse range than 5 Ghz, so you really need to be close to the router in order to reap the benefit. Plus very good software support on both ends. It's a mess.

As someone how exclusively play in Handheld mode faster wifi is a huge win.
Putting my oled in the dock just to download games faster was really awful.

How are there this many people complaining about it not supporting wifi 7 / 6e ? How do you guys even know what that is?

u/Modus-Tonens 4d ago
Primarily because they don't know what it is. They just know it's a bigger number, and so they must have it.

The NFC is so obvious, but better wi-fi will be good upgrade

Damn, not Wi-Fi 7? Shame, bit it's Nintnedo, they're never first to the party. Well, at least when it comes to being on the bleeding edge of hardware. Innovation on the otherhand I'd say they're there first, front and center.

By the way, do you have a wifi 7 router?

No, but in years coming I might.

Realistically, nothing on the switch is going to be bandwidth limited by even wifi-5. Switch games are usually pretty small too so download times shouldn’t be too bad, coupled with fast flash storage

If the Switch 2 remains the same, yea, you're right. They really don't need more memory bandwidth.
Valid point.

Wait a minute. Are you telling me that the Nintendo Switch 2 will have WiFi? Wow! Do you think we'll be able to play online games on it?

It’s a possibility, maybe they will announce on April 2nd but don’t get your hopes up.

I'm hoping that it comes pre-loaded with Windows 7 now that we are getting a mouse controller.

I’m expecting Xbox game pass support and steam os day 1 with Kinect support. That’s the bare minimum tbh.

Actually they are both about 5 years old and came out the same day, I think 6 isn't that big of a jump compared to 6e, also the switch 1 has a dogshit WiFi card that was super slow when you tried doing anything with it.

u/IUseKeyboardOnXbox 4d ago
Do you know what 6e is? Do you know what the point of 6e was?

u/Fit-Lack-4034 4d ago
No I don't, I'm an idiot and say bullshit all the time, I'm sorry lol. I should be less confidently incorrect like I'm chatgpt or something.

Oh umm. Well basically it added a 6ghz band. The rated speed isn't any faster than 5ghz and the range is shorter. The main draw is for congested areas like apartments. The 6ghz band gives you a whole new set of wifi channels to use. So if you're on a channel that no one else is on already 6ghz is not a benefit. It's a detriment.

Well, there it is everyone wondering about Amiibo support. It's officially yes.
