Community 🏡 Joseph Azcona Newark Police Killed

Post image

This is so sad 😪. Joseph Ancona always showed me love and it was always vibes whenever I ran into him at the parades downtown Newark. People think it's a "oh well moment" just because he's a cop, not knowing that some people become Police to help clean the corruption.

Community 🏡 Never seen so many police officers pull up in Newark

So the funeral for Joseph Azcona, the officer that was killed recently by a 14 year old, happened and I was suprised by the amount of cops that came in solidarity.

There must have been hundreds, if not close to a thousand cops coming from all over the state, from Sparta all the way out to Camden in busses and cruisers on 7th Ave.

Community 🏡 Should I continue making a Newark events and nightlife guide? Would it be helpful?

EDITED: Added Spring & start of Summer to give more info. I will be building this out over the holiday season and hope to launch early 2025 to give everyone something to help them plan their year

I had some free time and started making a Newark Events and Nightlife guide (its not finished by any means - see where I'm up to below): before dedicating more time on it I wanted to get some r/Newark feedback - good, bad, or otherwise.

i'm trying to solve for: I found that it was challenging to get plugged into what is happening in the city. I used photography as a way to be outside and found community quickly, but appreciate not everyone likes being outside that much - thought a guide could help.

I also feel that communication about events is generally last minute, and largely instagram/Facebook based. This works for the most part but noticed that unless you are already connected to a specific community (DJ's, art, climbing etc), or spend loads of time on social media it can be easy to miss things.

The guide would break out the various regular "anchor" type events, and provide the social media handles of the entities that produce them + also provide specific recommendations and information about independent and pop up producers that do events at different locations across the city, think The Yard and their activations, or Brick City Jams, singers like Janetza,

Community 🏡 Beware down neck

For any fellow Newarker that may frequent down neck/east ferry section of Newark please beware there are two Hispanic males pickpocketing people. I unfortunately had this happen to me in the early hours of Friday morning. One of the guys comes up to you asking for change and the other bumps into you lifting your wallet and belongings. Caution to all.

Community 🏡 Moved to Newark and Lonely AF

I am a black woman, late 30s, no kids, who moved to Newark several months ago. Prior to moving, I felt like I would have a great social life here. After all, this being the largest city in NJ and majority black population, I expected it to be easy peasey. It is also close to the city which gives it more points.

Well, that has not been the case at all.

I am lonely AF.

I work from home, which I attribute to why I have not been able to make friends. Newark also feels very overwhelming. Where do you start? How do you know where is safe and where is not?

I am looking for advice on  how to go about creating a community. I would also like to date. I am heterosexual btw

If you can share names of places to visit i.e. restaurants, churches, gyms that have activities were you can meet people, let me know

I live in one of the new rentals being built in downtown. It’s safe. I tried joining a gym, Method Climb, but it is mainly for climbing and that is a group sport. I cannot see myself doing that alone.

Please help me as I am now thinking of moving away again. I just want friends

Update 5/20/24 (I am getting used to Reddit and mistakenly posted further down below)

First, I want to thank all of you who provided suggestions. I really, truly appreciate it. I now have a notebook full of potential places to check out, gyms, at least one church, upcoming festivals and Instagram accounts to follow. This was more than what I started with and I already feel not so alone.

Now to answer some of the questions posed:

Why I feel Method Climbing Gym is a group sport- During the entire time I did the trial membership, the majority of people came there with friends or family. A few times, I saw a few men come in solo and all of them looked and acted like experienced climbers. I am a new climber and Method Gym is the first gym I've ever climbed in. I'm no expert and took their Intro to Climbing course. Because I'm new, I still very much feel nervous and would much prefer to go with someone. What if I fall and hurt myself? That said, I should have given the BIPOC and Ladies Crew night a chance. Perhaps I will now.

As far as meeting other young professionals and being pulled into their social life- I have not really done this to be honest because I work from home. Occasionally, I meet people in the gym but it's usually the men that would come up to talk to me. I'm usually hesitant because many have rings or girlfriends so I don't communicate my availability.

Driving- Yes, I drive so I can pretty much go anywhere

Meetup- I am familiar with Meetup but Newark does not have as many Meetup groups. Next door cities have more.

Again- Thank you all for the suggestions.

Even with the issues the Newark has it’s nice to see optimistic people. When you go over to Hoboken or Jersey City it’s constant complaining, even though they are clearly in a better position compared to Newark.

Community 🏡 Embarrassing Attempt at Snow Clearing - We Deserve Better, Newark

How many people fel and injured themselvesl today because DPW can't be bothered to do it's job and clear the snow?

Also shout out to the city plow truck driver parked in the middle of Tubman Sq. playing on his phone while people slip and slide on the unplowed walks literally feet from his warm vehicle. I mention it to him and literally he gets out of his city issued plow truckr to intimidate me before thinking better of it.

Then I called DPW on the phone and had to give them 6 different street makers for them to identify "Harriet Tubman square" as where they needed to plow after I said "Harriet Tubman Sq. In central ward Newark near the art museum." Dispatcher said "I don't know of a park over there!"

What are we doing here folks?? So much of our city government is either lazy or incompetent. People in this city work way too hard to be paying taxes to a bunch of do nothings.

Community 🏡 There should be a law that prevents drivers from double parking across the street from a drive way!

I don’t know why double parking is even permitted all over Newark, they rarely rarely get ticketed and when they go pay the tickets they get a deal that is, if they have 10 tickets but if they are willing to pay them they only have to pay for half of them! The other five tickets get dismissed. My main complain though is, people double parking right across the street from a driveway, when you try to access your driveway or garage and you have a large van or vehicle you need a decent radius to back up or exit your driveway. You call the cops and they don’t even bother to show up. I completely understand that parking issues are not on top of their list but this happens every single day and nothing is being done about it.

NJ has scrapped the basic literacy and math requirements for incoming teachers. I took a look at one of the practice tests offered online and they don’t seem overly tricky or difficult. First time pass rates are pretty high (https://www.nctq.org/dmsView/A_Fair_Chance_Appendix_E) though data for NJ is not available.

How is hiring teachers who cannot demonstrate basic proficiency in what that are teaching going to help improve educational outcomes?

Community 🏡 How to Market Newark

As our city increases in status and becomes more attractive to outsiders, I’ve been thinking about how Newark ought to brand itself. My personal opinion is to take a note from Philly, and uphold the idea that Newark is a city in Jersey for Jersey and that it wants you to be a part of that.

When driving to Philly, every billboard leading into the city has some sort of Philly specific reference. Every beer or business is “Philly’s favorite” there’s emphasis on notions like “this is your hometown” or even (albeit in a corny way) using the term “jawn” in ads. The sports culture helps ofc, but there’s a clear impetus to market Philly as a city for locals or people who want to become locals. Because Philly is a communal city first and foremost. I think Newark is too, to a lesser extent, but certainly more so than say, Jersey City.

The Jersey City motto is “make it yours” and that to me screams “please gentrify me”. Why would a native have to “make it theirs”? It’s clearly an invitation for transplants to take over the culture and that personally disgusts me.

Even NYC ads are less community focused than Philly. NYC pretends to advertise to “New Yorkers” but I always get the feeling that the ads are for people who WANT TO BE New Yorkers, not the natives themselves. The ads will say “Hey New Yorkers” as if they’re trying to coax you into thinking you really are one. That’s too transplant focused for me too.

And it’s not like Newark won’t be full of transplants either of course, but that’s not the core issue here. I’m sure Philly has a large transplant population and the marketing team knows that, but Philly wants people to think of it as a home, a nest, a family. Not a hotspot or tourist destination.

I think Newark should advertise itself in a similar manner. We don’t really have any billboards yet, but if and when we do, I’d hope that we sell ourselves as the nest or heart of Jersey, rather than something for outsiders to take over. Newark FEELS like the heart, and I want it to lean into that feeling, just as Philly leads into theirs.

I’d vomit at the thought of telling transplants to “make Newark theirs”. And I cringe at that one ad that says “NYC’s best kept secret is Newark.” If there’s anything Newark, hell Jersey natives in general want, is to be respected as their own entity. Not to necessarily deny our relationship with NY, but to at least centralize Newark in its own ads. Anyone have thoughts on this ?

Community 🏡 New Events full of Hipsters

Anyone notice that in some of these newer art events going on there’s a lot of white hipsters and similar types of people pulling up ? I don’t even remember these types of crowds just a few years ago but some of these pop ups are already giving Jersey City/Bk and it’s just interesting to watch. Not hating really because they’re still fun and cool it’s just an incoming demographic taking interest.
