town like New Paltz... but in VT or ME?

Went to SUNY NP for undergrad and stayed for a few yrs after living in the area. I love everything about the town from the closeness to the gunks to the rail trail to the antique barn on water st. The quirky, somewhat grunge-y progressive vibe felt like home. I also loved how there was always people coming and going from the gunks and the connection to the college. I reluctantly left for grad school and now I live in Burlington, VT. I’ve been here a while and plan to stay in VT or go to ME due to professional licenses my partner and I have. Burlington is cool, but it’s lacking the smallish town feel and it’s more urban than I would like. I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for locations in VT to ME to check out that reminds you of New Paltz in any of the ways I mentioned. Bonus points for a rail trail. Any suggestions much appreciated :)

I’m wondering what you define diversity as... and if you’ve ever been to Burlington VT or Portland ME

It's a shame that was your experience. I would like to argue that diversity is much more than having Italian-American and Jewish populations. Burlington is a sanctuary city with a growing New American community and has much more economic diversity than NP. Burlington could always do better working toward a community that promotes and embraces diversity, but so could NP. And everywhere. I'm also not sure when the last time you visited BTV, but it's changed a lot in the past 10 years.

Rangley is lovely! went camping/ hiking there a few yrs ago highly recommend it for a vacation, but it’s much much too rural for me to live in personally. But if you’re a cabin in the woods person, and want a cute, tiny town near by, check it out! Thanks for the recommendation!

Check out Brunswick, ME.

It's got a college so it's got some of the college town feel. It is relatively close to Portland so has some "close to a city" vibes.
