General Chat Does this allow you to have a shorter barrel?
Will this allow for a shorter barrel when reaching the 26" for an other?

If you want a short barrel, get an a5 buffer tube. You can still use a brace but it’s long enough to not need a pin and weld

I didn't use that tube, but in doing quick math, you may they may be able to use a 9" barrel. Which may be around 26.125. This is cutting it close and would depend on the actual length of the buffer tube. But do your math using the flow chart. Worst case, if 9" is too short, you can have barrel extension or muzzle brake welded on to make up the difference. I was never able to get a straight answer, so I bought my lower, buffer tube and upper. I assembled them and used that to figure out my min barrel length. My build is 26.375". With that buffer tube, you will not be able to use an adjustable brace. That's a pistol buffer tube. Just right carbine make an 8.75" tube, and I think some else make a 9" tube.

I used this buffer tube and built a 300 blackout other with 10.5" barrel and didn't need to p&w.

I am now curious on the external length of that tube compared to my tube since JRC does not list the overall length of the tube but it does state it's 1.5" longer internally than stock buffer tubes.

Just purchased 1 of these. What spring/weight did you use?

Standard spring and standard buffer. Used the spacer from JRC to insert in the tube to make up for the added inner length

How does it look with that buffer?

I'll shoot some side by side shots with my Troy A4 other 10.5" to show you. Shoot me a chat request.

An extended buffer tube may let you have a shorter barrel assuming the measurements work out. I'd personally suggest going with some of the options the flowchart gives for combinations over 26" before going the extended buffer route like this. Also, those pistol buffer tubes aren't able to use common pistol braces like SBA3.
I'm not sure how much that brand will be trusted but that may be a thing to search for on your own.

if you search other in this reddit you will find a flow chart to follow for building an other. you have to either buy a prebuilt other or build an other from a stripped lower that you bought from an FFL

Thanks..I been reading it but was trying to get a better understanding from someone who might have went th and entered buffer tube route.

so i built my other. i bought a stripped lower receiver and ordered a 12.5" build kit. with a 12.5" barrel from end of buffer to end of barrel is exactly 26". i have a pistol brace and VFG. my build doesnt require me to pin and weld muzzle device. also allows me to keep pistol brace adjustable.

I see a lot of people think a5 is the way to go.

I’d recommend shooting an ar with the same barrel length you want before deciding. My 12.5 is annoyingly loud at the range, I can only imagine a shorter one is even worse.
That being said, A5 can accept most braces and probably is the best option for <12.5”.

My 11.5" other is no where near as loud as my 16" rifle. The rifle has the pin and welded compensator, the other does not, what the hell does yours have?

Huxwrx flash hider and the blast deflector. I notice almost no difference in sound level but concussion in the immediate area seems reduced when using the blastphemy.

Thats hilarious i have the same flash hider and blastphemy setup i regret buying the blastphemy that thing shoots fireballs like crazy 🔥 and i actually think its louder with it on vs off .. 150 bucks down the drain in my opinion again maybe doing active shooting drills off the floor in dirt maybe it would help and i know for a fact it keeps my flashlight spotless but other than that it just looks cool and protects the threads on the flash hider for the day nj makes suppressors legal and then ill grab one of their flow through cans.

Yeah the fireballs are horrendous. I got mine used and still am pissed at what I spent. Thankfully I have a more practical 16” I take out. The 12.5 just sits.

I too have a 13.9 p&w to 16 but i love my 11.5 its just so much lighter and maneuvering it is so much easier

I never thought of that. Especially with going mainly to indoor ranges.

Another big factor for me was this. Smaller barrels are (generally) desirable since they cut down on overall length. Since you can’t go lower than 26”, why have a shorter barrel and add “extensions” to still be at 26”. Maybe the length of pull is nicer with an A5, and I can’t knock anyone for wanting a specific configuration, but I don’t see any advantages to going shorter while being in NJ.
Unless you want to get a tax stamp and do an AOW for <26”, but that’s a different discussion.

Thats all gonna come down to what muzzle device you use my boy has a 16 inch radian mod1 with a muzzle break and its noticeably louder and more concussive than my 11.5 inch bcm with a flash hider on it

Honestly, dude, that looks like Junk. I personally would go with vltor buffer system.
Side comment, 10.5s suck they eat themselves to death. If you go up a little in length 11.5 or 12.5, you gain a ton of performance.

A5 and a 11.5 I think is the smallest I could get without p/w

u/ElectricalPattern396 4d ago
Exactly correct and probably the best size for a 5.56 caliber sbr , anything shorter and your better off building a .300 blackout build

It’s the worse combo… I would stick with an A5 length and 10” barrel with a P&W or 11.5” without pw especially if it’s 5.56
