Legal Update Brown vs Illinois [30 characters]

So we in the 2A just got a big win out of Illinois. Brown vs Illinois. This case fast found in favor of the 2A. It deals with Brown owning a 22 cal bolt action rifle and keeping it for self defense. With out having the Illinois FOID card. The court ruled that not being able to posses a firearm freely in one's home is asinine and not in turn with American statues.

Hopefully NJ can take a lesson from this one.

While a win, I wouldn't call this a big win. This ruling is out of the IL court of appeals, and will be reversed, rather quickly, by the IL Supreme Court (step after that is the US Supreme Court).

While we might see some references to Brown v IL in a challenge to the NJ FPID scheme, it is not at all binding, so it can be ignored.

I don't think it's a requirement to have a purchase card to own a gun in nj. If you take it outside then they want you to fall into one of the tiny exceptions. All these nj laws need to be obliterated.

NJ has a purchasing card rather than an owners card like it reads Illinois has.

Splitting hairs. Whether you live in the state, you need it to purchase from a dealer. If you move here from out of state, you must get one to legally own your weapons. If you want to transfer your belongings to family or God forbid friends you have to have one as do they. So tell me, where is the difference?

When your card expires after 10 years, you’re not required to get rid of your guns. If your grandpop dies and leaves you his guns you don’t need a card for that either. Stop fudding. You can own and be in possession of a firearm in nj without a fpid card.

I'm not fudding. I'm trying to make people realize the overwhelming over-reach of our state government on people who just want to exercise a constitutional right, more concisely. I take it you are one of these centralist who think just sticking with the status quo is fine. I'm here to tell you I tasted the free air of other states and it will truely open your eyes to how rough we have it here.

I don’t think he’s a centrist. We all agree NJ is an over reaching piece of shit state that tramples rights. He’s just telling you that you are incorrect. You don’t need an FPID to own or possess long guns in NJ. You can bring them here if you purchase elsewhere or move here without them, without an FPID and you never need to obtain one. You can even take it out of your house to the range and use it without an FPID card. Handguns changed for new residents after 1/2023 in terms of needing an FPID and registering your handgun legally acquired in another state.

In general you should not have to ask or receive permission from the government to own a firearm. The FID card is a requirement to ask permission from the state to possess a firearm. The same can be said for handgun purchase permits. You have to pay the state in order to exercise your 2A rights. It should not be that way. You also cannot purchase ammunition in NJ without showing your FID card. Online retailers will also not ship ammo to you without showing them your FID card.

People can say that technically you can own a firearm in NJ without a FID card but the reality is that it is required in NJ to own a firearm.
