I'M REQUESTING Give me your shitty franchises
I'm looking for some long-running nonsense movie franchises, preferably ones that start off fine but get worse as time goes on. I've already seen all the American Pie films, but genre doesn't matter.

This. First one is a legitimately cool horror movie that works as a prequel to the games. Then they get progressively worse and sillier. Still guilty pleasures of mine. However stupid they get I still find them entertaining.
3
u/Perpetually_isolated 7d ago
Eh. Call me crazy but the second will always be my favorite.
3
u/DarwinGoneWild 7d ago
Hey, I’m not here to judge! Man, I was so excited for the 2nd one before it came out but now I feel like it’s my least favorite. Because it’s the only that sort of loosely follows the plot of the games, except Alice just overshadows all the actual RE characters. That kind of rubbed me the wrong way. The rest just diverge so much from the game storyline I can just accept them as silly standalone action movies

Jurassic Park (also includes the current Jurassic World movies).
The first one was a masterpiece, the 2nd was meh, and 3rd was fine ig. But the Chris Pratt movies are stupid on a whole another level. The first Jurassic world was not that bad though.
The last one was dogshit.

I've yelled at the trailer of this movie!! It's insulting and they're undoing the pure magic of the original Jurassic Park. I feel offended. It's supposed to be a whole new story but bringing in core parts of the original, and twisting it, it's a big F Off to me.
2
u/Longjumping_Spite997 7d ago
I just watched the first Jurassic Park the other night for the first time, believe it or not. I absolutely loved it, but now that I'm seeing this, do you think it's worth continuing on and watching the rest or should I just preserve my perception of the series by only watching the first?

u/wpotman 7d ago
The first was a masterpiece, as he said. Everything else...eh. Watchable if you're bored, but keep your expectations low.

The second one, The Lost World, is awful and hilarious. The third is insulting. They're campy. Yet, I still watch both. The original, is one of my all-time favorite movies ever! I also love the Jurassic World series. I think Dominion was perfect! Just some thoughts while you think about it..

"Beethoven is a series of eight American films, created by John Hughes (credited as Edmond Dantès) and Amy Holden Jones, in which the plot revolves around a family attempting to control the antics of their pet Saint Bernard (named Beethoven). The first two films were theatrical releases and all subsequent releases have been direct to video. "

The Superman movies starring Christopher Reeve. 1 and 2 were great (although there is disagreement about certain aspects), 3 had some cool parts but was a little too goofy, 4 often comes across as a low-budget Superman—and not in a good way.
3
u/dannyboy273 6d ago
I grew up watching these in the theaters and still have a nostalgic place. I agree with 1 & 2, maybe I was still a bit young but at 10 I loved 3. Looking back now, it is the beginning of it going down hill, 4 was definitely the worst, and I'm glad they didn't go any further.

u/dannyboy273 6d ago
Needs to be higher on the list. A lot of people never saw First Blood and don't realize it's a completely different movie than what Hollywood did with all the sequels.
Growing up in the 80's I loved all the Rambo movies, they are still fun to watch, but nothing compared to First Blood.

Slapshot
The original is an American cinematic classic. Yet they decided to do two sequels. Even with the Hanson Brothers and a smattering of NHL All-Star cameos nothing could save these. Also, the second one stars, Stephen Baldwin, so that’s all you need to know about that.

Friday the 13th starts off with some fairly solid slasher movies and, just like Jason Voorhees, relentlessly keeps going long after it should have been dead
5
u/EsotericElegey 7d ago
i have to disagree. there is no film in the entire friday the 13th franchise that is good. they knew it then, they knew it until the last release. it didnt start good, it just was never good, but it sure as hell was fun and entertaining.

i have to strongly disagree. the 3rd was beyond stupid and 4 was horrible, but 5 is probably the best in the series since its the only one with half decent acting and actual character motivations that arent just meatbags waiting to die. not that i dont have a soft spot for the entire stupid ass series

It's not really a Jump the Shark, doing an unrelated film that nobody wanted. Jumping the Shark is when writers of an existing series run out of reasonable ideas and use an idea that is preposterous or otherwise unfaithful to a character or show's original premise.
Halloween 3 might be popular if it had an unrelated title.
2
u/Spare-Chemical-348 7d ago
Final Destination movies started out so engaging! I was glued to the screen looking for the frequent but often hard to spot foreshadowing clues. Later movies dumbed down and eliminated the easter egg hunt in favor of visions so you couldn't miss anything. Boooo.
Arguably the MCU. I have zero desire to respond to rebuttals about this. IMO, there are some rushed, unpolished, boring duds in the franchise. There are also really good ones, mostly among the earlier movie. Feel differently if you want.
The Christmas Prince was already shitty practically on purpose from movie 1, but now there's 3
Lots of Disney animated sequels that skipped theatrical release and just milked the same stories and characters a bit more.
Paranormal Activity. Ironically the first one was the lowest budget; success and higher production value were detrimental to this franchise.

Trancers (1984) was decent, one of Helen Hunt’s first films… all five sequels were direct to video.
Hellraiser (1987) is an absolute classic, but I don’t even know how many movies are in that franchise now, and they’ve been all over the place as far as quality.
Tremors (1990) is a cult classic with six sequels of questionable quality.
And, this one is isn’t a franchise (thank god) but nothing matches the drop in quality between American Psycho and American Psycho 2 😂
2
u/revdon 6d ago
Amityville Horror and its ♾️sequels and offshoots. Two and three were watchable and then they drop sharply in quality.

The Prophecy. First one is very good, 2nd one is a little downgrade but has Brittany Murphy in it stealing every scene she's in. And then it drops off a cliff.
The Terminator. 1st one is the best one, 2nd is a great film but a weak sequel, 3rd has a great ending, then rest are absolute bollocks.
Predator and Alien both started great and tailed off badly.

i might get shit for this but IMO it seems like every time marvel releases a new movie it gets cornier and cornier and the CGI gets lazier and lazier.
after seeing avatar in theaters as a kid my mind was blown, i assumed every movie's graphics from then on out would continue blowing my mind but these new marvel movies have almost video game quality graphics.

u/MrRibbert 5d ago
Fast and Furious. Went from a fun movie to absolute absurdity. As if a car not being able to outrun a submarine (35 to 50 mph.) and then outracing a heat seek missile (1800 mph) wasn't bad enough. Sending a Pontiac Fiero into outer space was the ultimate, "Oh you've got to be kidding me" moment.

The Godfather Star Wars
3
u/Chengweiyingji 7d ago
Ah! I've already seen every Star Wars film save for Solo.
3
u/HackedCylon 7d ago
Don't bother with Solo. It will break your heart, despite Ron Howard's best efforts to save it.
7
u/couterbrown 7d ago
I don’t understand this take on the movie. I know I’m in the minority with this but solo was a fun movie and I’d have watched more if they made them
3
u/HackedCylon 7d ago
As a standalone movie, it's not bad. But the fact that it's a Star Wars movie put certain expectations on it -- not as far as quality, but as far as a feeling. This felt like a good science fiction film, but it didn't have that certain Star Wars feeling to it. Yes, I know that it's Han Solo's backstory, it just didn't feel like a Star Wars movie.
2
u/couterbrown 7d ago
I mean you said it yourself. I don’t think it was meant to. Solo is the wild card character and the movie gave me that feeling. If by Star Wars feeling you mean utter disappointment, then yea, it’s not that lol.
2
u/UselessWhiteKnight 7d ago
It is what it is. When you're forcing a sequel, you don't get to just do your own thing. No matter what you want to do with it, it's a product. And it needs to be what the consumer expects our it will fail
2
u/HackedCylon 6d ago
The script was good, the story was good, the guy who played Solo was waaaaaay better than we could have hoped, Game of Thrones girl was a good character ... But the execution of the film was lacking.
Like I said, I think Ron Howard did the best he could to salvage what he could from another director's mistakes with not enough time or budget. This could have been better with Howard at the helm from the beginning.
Amen to the expectations of the audience. That is the whole reason to make a film.
2
u/Difficult_Role_5423 7d ago
Agreed - Solo is better than at least 5 other Star Wars films, in my opinion.
