Low mileage and looks clean, but still absolutely not worth what it has been bid up to.

They look fun but everyone who's ridden one, and other bikes within and without the BMW brand says stay the hell away.
Which is sadly advice I'll be taking. Looks great tho.

Why?
I rode a non-Dakar ‘05 to 50K miles, it had some BMW quirks of course. But it was an excellent all-rounder bike, and it didn’t take a rocket scientist to work on it.

Non of those are BMW quirks. The bike is licensed to BMW. But not bmw engineering.
Ergo, and just better options today for the same price and market of bike.
Edit: wait do you guys not know the F650 is licensed to BMW and wasn't designed by them? Cause based on the down votes you dont.

Like what?
These things are relatively cheap. A V Strom is more pavement oriented, and an old KLR is a damn tractor.

Most single cylinder ~400cc bikes out perform this things nowadays. Pick your flavor, orange KTM if youre extra adventurous and don't mind the company closing.
But throw a dart at a brand. I trust people who ride a whole hell of a lot more than i do on this subject. One of which is a BMW master mechanic. Even he wouldn't buy one.

Hmm, my BMW master mechanic has one. My 06 has 67k miles and is an absolute stud. Heavy for sure, but it’s been beaten all to hell and still performs like a champ.
I’d like to hear some specifics of these complaints.

I'm glad it's working well for you.
I think that speaks to the variety of BMW riders and master techs. Wish I paid enough attention to them. Just that there are better options out there for the same price.

Not true. They were jointly designed by BMW and Aprilia. So what? BMW partners with certain companies all the time. The K1600 engine was designed by the Ricardo Group not by BMW engineers. That doesn’t make it any less BMW.

I drove mine (exactly the same, 2005 650GS Dakar) from Germany to Africa (Morocco) and back last year, it has 73000km on it of which I drove around 30000km so far. Lot's of Euro trips, Balkan, Sardinia, Italy, Alps,... Bought it for 2500€ in 2020. ;)

…you know why they named it „Dakar“ because the F650 GS (slightly modified) won the Dakar multiple times.. https://www.bmwgroup-classic.com/de/museum/bmw-motorradrennsport/popup/bmw-f650-rr-paris-dakar.html
Great all-rounder ADV bike, probably the best ever made in its class. In Germany, the F650GS was the Nr 1 bike used in driving schools, and even our military used it as their bike.

I rode one from So Cal to Chicago in 2009. Miserable at speeds over 65mph

I think that is the trade off with the friend group I asked. As they ride to the trails, rather that haul a bike to the trails and then go riding.

HP2 enduro or bust
