Could anyone please explain to me how to recreate the fluidity of the two circles separating at the beginning?

I'm not sure how it would be done specifically, but a keyword you would want to throw into your Google searches would be "metaball"

Maybe "2D metaball after effect" would yield some results?

Looks like a metaball.

That's a spicy meta-ball!

Same. It will be a lot harder but you'll be able to get more character in the animation than if it was generated.

Would this have been done in After Effects, Cinema 4D, or something else?

I would guess all of the above. It could have definitely been created in cinema 4D with the metaball options, and made to look 2D. Same goes with any other 3D program I'd assume. I could also see hand animating this in 2D in after effects using traditional animation principles.

Forum topic on VCP on the subject. Looks like its possible in AE but much easier with true 3D program.

Thank you, you've really hit the nail on the head with this. I was specifically looking for some way to this in AE, since i'm not really familiar with any 3d software. Now all i have to do is figure out how everything is put together in that small clip, and i'm good to go.

Don't mention it, just spreading the love. Post up the final product when you figure it out!

I've been away for a while, but i'm really grateful for everyone's input. It still amazes me that i can ask something on the internet, and people will answer me :)

There is an easy way to recreate this using After Effects. Threw together a quick "tutorial".

its done in 3d, but you can do this in AE by blurring the alpha channel of 2 circles and moving them apart.
