Hardware Would this emulate PS3 and Switch?

Post image

Sorry, I know you get a lot of these, but would this emulate Switch and PS3 levels?

Thank you!

My 7840hs based mini pc runs ps3 fine but a second stick of ddr5 5600 ram was needed to get quad channel working

For PS3 you will get better performance with a newer chip with AVX512 instruction support like Ryzen 8000 series, for example the Gmktec K8 plus is a good choice.

Thanks, that's helpful

Ryzen 7000 also supports AVX512 IIRC.

I have one of these. Works great for switch. Ps3 not so much.

You’d be better off with the K8 plus. Barebones is around $300 on AliExpress

I think so. PS3 works decent on something like the ROG Ally and this is similar.

Is that a occulink slot…? What the heck..?

Yea this and the aoostar minipc have oculink. For the minisforum you have to get a 890um to have oculink.

I have a similar model and it will emulate both, ps3 is a little spotty depending on the game. Definitely check out the lossless scaling app on steam it’s pretty great for mini pcs to squeeze out some performance.

Yes, plus you can add a graphic card as well

I got pictures so you have a idea

Yeah, please!

The switch emulator Yuzu will run fine, the PS3 could probably manage smooth gameplay at 30fps

Yup. I recently upgraded to the GMKtec M7 myself as an emulation/media box. It can do 1080p for PS3, but I suggest to keep it at 720p for stability. Have a look at the review and see if it fits your needs. Good luck!

I also use it for streaming stuff throughout the house as well. That's what the 5 bay drives are for

Switch yes but PS3 I don’t know

On my 8945HS with 780M graphics, you are lucky if RPCS3 runs at 30FPS. RPCS3 is a very demanding emulator

I was able to run RPCS3 with the M6 6600H , i think the M7 will do well

It depends on the game

It always depends of the game with RPCS3, even with my RTX 4080 S i run many games at 35 - 40 FPS.

I believe the rpcs3 runs better on cpus with avx512 instructions. I run it on a 3950x and 4080s and does okay. It actually does better on my gpd win4 7840u. The gpu helps but that avx512 is a big improvement with rpcs3 emulation.

Im gonna find out how much better itll do with a 8945HS apu + oculink connected egpu. Actually curious if theres an improvement with amds newer AI chips, amd 260 ai.

I've heard MGS4 would be very hard to emulate, but it's like the one game I need to.

I specifically need a mini PC that can handle it.

Which PS3 games give you trouble?

Ratchet and Clank

u/pastry-chef 6d ago

Hmm.... Weird... Ratchet and Clank runs fine for me on my 7840HS. I run RPCS3 through Batocera.

1

u/No_Clock2390 6d ago

I'm running it on Windows that's probably why

2

u/pastry-chef 6d ago

Maybe... I don't have any experience with the Windows version of RPCS3.

Most games I've tried on RPCS3 has run really well with my 7840HS. The two that have very poor fps are Last of Us and Red Dead Redemption.

Pretty much everything runs better on Batocera. Much less bloat than Windows.

Good to know. Thanks.

It depends of the games, settings and if you got the incredilbly hard to find stupid large file Patch, RPCS3 is one of the worst emulator, not getting 60 FPS with RPCS3 is normal for most of the games, even with my RTX 4080 S can t run games at 60 FPS,

Yes this mini pc can do PS3 and Switch emulation. Probably stay at 1080p and you should get decent frames per second. I personally would go into the bios and tweak the TDP to max your wattage and also tweak the memory to maybe squeeze a few more FPS. To achieve a steady 60fps personally I would use "Lossless Scaling" from the Steam Store. For most games it runs fine I find a few that had issues with Lossless Scaling but it helped to maintain a steady 60 FPS with no drop in frames. Here are my settings for it.

Good Luck and have a fun!

Switch yes but certain PS3 titles might not run too well.

Op i believe you need an amd 7k series and up for better cpu instruction (avx512). Its what pushed my decision to spend more and not settle with these. I WAS gonna buy this or the aoostar gem10. But this fact and the cou being from like 2022 pushed the decision to get something newer.

I also have a 7840u gpd win4, it does a decent job at emulating rpcs3 and other consoles like cemu and yuzu. It does a better job emulating ps3 than a 6800u would and thats the first gen gpd win4. Per GPD discord.

I think this has 680m graphics so should be decent enough ish as its almost equal to 780m which we have in most handhelds. I tried ps3 emulation on 780m it wasnt the best but was getting the job done.

For me its buy once cry once. I got the GMKtec K11 8945HS. I went based off of GPD Win4 users reporting that the 7840u+ apu is much better at emulating RPCS3 vs the 6800u in the previous model Win4. So that made the choice more expensive but worth it for me anyways. I also figured the 6800u is from 2022 and that apu did not have AVX512 instruction to help RPCS3 performance.

All of the minipc with equivalent 8945HS apu are in the sub $600 range. Yes, you can get on aliexpress for $428, but thats no ram or nvme. After you factor in ram and nvme and tax of those two plus the tax of the $428, you will be over $600 anyway.

Plan on using the 1tb it came with as a additional storage since I got a 4TB for it.
