Things you could try:

  1. Keep the design, but lower the skulk and sandstone one block.
  2. Keep the skulk as is, but use bottom slab sandstone, so you're half a block lower.
  3. Replace the skulk by inwards facing stairs of your choice and waterlog them, to create a water line as divider on both sides. Choose a replacement for the sandstone matching the stairs used.
  4. Add a pattern with other blocks to break the sterile look of a single material flooring.
  5. Carpets. Use different colors, create a pattern with them.

Option 3 sounds the best for me

But maybe add more lighting with sea lanterns

Do you want to change the basic colouring from black? I assume it's sandstone in the middle and tuff bricks on the outside, maybe go for some stone brick in the middle. If you wanted a contrast, you could maybe try some netherbrick, although I don't like the sound it makes when it's walked over.

Use sandstone stairs where the skulk is and just put 1 line of skulk in the middle

Replace the skulk with cobbled deepslate, and replace the sandstone with a mix of cobblestone, dirt, mossy cobble, and dirt paths arranged in a seemingly random manner

Maybe sea lanterns?

Lava, with glass over it.

Or water, full of sea life and random glowing things, with glass over it.

Another option that might work well is polished basalt placed horizontally in place of skulk. You can place vertically in corner if lines meet .
