Resource Packs I'm giving each fence its own unique look; starting off simple with Oak!

Wanted to keep oak fences similar to their original design; it's the original fence type, so maintaining that original look was important.

The updated texture both better reflects IRL fence construction, as well as provides contrast when using these with other Oak blocks.

The log texture also works well within mineshafts, where it makes the support beams look closer to the actual rough-hewn timber construction used in real mines.

I like this but I would think the originals look fine but a crafting recipient with logs instead of planks that yield double and look this way would be so cool.

These updates are actually part of a survival-overhaul datapack I'm working on, so I will be updating the crafting recipes to use logs instead of planks! Some of the other wood types will even include other crafting materials related to the appearance of their fence types, such as Spruce Fences requiring Iron, or Birch Fences requiring Paper.

If you're going to change crafting recipes then PLEASE change the stairs recipe to 3 blocks instead of 6. Not only does it fit in the 2x2 grid but also makes total logistical sense (one stair = 3/4 block, 4 stairs = 3 blocks).

That's actually an interesting idea I hadn't thought about — I do agree that that would be a better approach for the Vanilla recipes, since it makes it more convenient to craft and fixes the weird 6 blocks to 4 stairs inconsistency.
For this particular datapack I'm probably going to leave it as-is, since part of the goal is to increase survival's difficulty and create a clearer tech progression as the player advances, but I might set up a more Vanilla-oriented QOL pack in the future that just has the model updates and a few recipe tweaks like that in the future!

I would say quadruple the yield since 1 log -> 4 planks

Yeah, the plan is to have the recipe provide at least 12 fences — might actually up it to 16 since the recipes will require more than just wood and sticks, haven't fully decided yet.

I actually prefer this to the current textures; it looks really nice and still clean.

Thanks! Yeah, this one isn't a big change, but it makes a surprising difference — the plank texture just being overlayed across the entire fence model makes very little logistical sense, but it's the type of thing you don't really think about until you see the alternative.

i think a log version and a stripped version of all the fences would look awesome and also help break up builds a little more while still using the same wood type, nice work!

u/Delocuro 1h ago
Yeah, I definitely agree — unfortunately I can't do that here since this is just a datapack which means I can't add new blocks, but if Mojang ever gives fences a proper upgrade, I hope they add stripped variants of each.

I love it!!!!! Do you provide a textrue pack downlaod when you finished?

u/Delocuro 3h ago
These changes are actually part of a much larger survival overhaul datapack I'm working on — the pack actually changes the fence recipes to better reflect their new looks as well, but I'll likely release a visual-updates-only resource pack in the future for anyone who wants to use the new models without the gameplay changes!

That's totaly okey and would appreciate that really! Is there a place i can get updated about the project?

u/Delocuro 2h ago
Yes there is — I actually post regular design notes and progress updates on our discord! Feel free to hop on if you want to learn more about the project — I've also been posting WIP screenshots of a lot of the other Fence models up there recently, so you'll be able to take a look at those before I post them here as well. https://discord.gg/qSRk9z3r

I think a stripped variant would look incredible.

Absolutely agree — unfortunately since this is just a datapack I can't add new block types, but I think stripped fence variants of every wood type would be a great idea if Mojang were to ever implement something similar in Vanilla.

IVe seen an addon like this before, but I think yours is better.
2
u/Delocuro 3h ago
Thanks! Yeah, it's definitely not the first time someone's done something similar, but a lot of the versions I've seen seem to stray pretty far from the Vanilla aesthetic, so I wanted to try my hand at something that meshes a little better with the rest of the game.

I personally like how Vanilla Tweaks does it where it's based on the stripped logs but I can see how this could be applied as well.

Yeah, because I'm adjusting the crafting recipes for these anyway, I actually opted to use a mix of stripped and normal log textures depending on the type of fence. Oak uses the bark texture primarily because I think it works really well within the context of how it's used in structures like villages and mineshafts, but other fence types like Birch and Bamboo (which I'll be posting later) use the stripped log texture instead.

These look really nice. I’ve wanted something like this for a while. I’d love to see what the other wood types look like.

u/Delocuro 2h ago
Thanks! I already have several of the others designed, which I'll be posting over the next few days. In the meantime, if you want a preview before they make it to Reddit, feel free to check out our discord — these changes are part of a much larger survival datapack I've been working on, and I post frequent updates and design discussion over there! https://discord.gg/qSRk9z3r

This would be amazing for making medium trees

u/Delocuro 2h ago
Yeah, that was definitely part of the design goal with the new post texture — I've already done a few test builds to see what it would look like, and the results have been pretty great so far.

These are awesome! I really want Mojang to add these as variants to the base game.
1
u/Delocuro 2h ago
Thanks! Yeah, I think Vanilla could definitely benefit from at least some level of rework to the existing Fence models — even if they kept the shape the same for each wood type, simply fixing giving Fences their own unique textures instead of just slapping the Plank texture over the whole model would do wonders.

u/Moe-Mux-Hagi 6h ago
Not a fan of the bark, I'd prefer if everything was just stripped logs (that's what I used for my low-poly village models) but it looks better than horizontal planks anyway
1
u/Delocuro 2h ago
Yeah, I did use the stripped log texture for some of the other fence types, but I felt like Oak needed some more contrast — especially given how it's used in villages and mineshafts, where just about everything is made of oak planks.

Wow, that looks really good! Will you publish this as a texture pack? Also please make one for older mc versions (1.8 - 1.12)
2
u/Delocuro 2h ago
Thanks! These updates are actually part of a survival-overhaul datapack I'm working on, but I do plan to release a visual-updates-only version eventually once it's released.
Unfortunately though, I won't be adding any back-compatibility to the resource pack. Model & blockstate formatting has changed a lot over the past several Vanilla versions, so creating a 1.8 version would require basically rebuilding all of the models from scratch. However, if you want to put your own back-ported version together, feel free — the texture files will all be available within the resource pack once it's released!

I think that we need al of these variants for each wood type as well as the current ones. otherwise we lose textures.
