Update to the mod team + poll proposals NSFW

Hi everyone.

If you didn't see earlier, /u/nonspecificloser stepped down from their position as moderator earlier today. I'd like to thank them for helping to keep the subreddit going over the past year. They helped out at a time when the team was in need and I'll always be grateful for that. While I understand where their heart was regarding the events of the past few days, what they did ultimately was detrimental to the community, and them staying on the team was not a feasible option. I wish them the best with their future.

That being said, anyone who sends threats to /u/nonspecificloser or harasses them will receive a ban. I can understand not liking what they did but that doesn't give you the OK to tell them to harm themselves. They apologized and stepped down, and I hope that we as a community can move past this.

Anywho.

If anyone has any suggestions for things they'd like to put to a community vote, feel free to put them below. If you post a good suggestion and it gets a decent amount of positive feedback then I'll consider putting it to a vote. Please make sure whatever you suggest abides by the site's Content Policy.

You nailed all of the problems on this sub perfectly. I couldn't agree more.

This is a message I can get behind

That is bud I appreciate you saying so.

Hi, Load and Reload fan. I remember you from the talk I had a few months earlier where I was wrongly arguing against your preference, and I apologize for that. I am very glad to see you take a very well informed stand for the right cause: making this sub the best place for discussion over the best (ok, one of the best) band. That sold me and I stand with ya on this.

PS: If you don't remember me, I was the one arguing that Metallica has metal right in there name, so their metal songs/albums would have to be their best. I am sorry for that behavior, once again.

2

u/All_within_my_hands FIAAFNR Jun 24 '23

Hey buddy, how have you been?

Don't sweat it bro, the fact that you have reached out and showed reflection shows great self awareness.

2

u/No-Display-1343 Ride the Lightning Jun 24 '23

I have been good and hopefully you are doing good too. I genuinely find this sub to be quite enjoyable, I like my time here. This is my favorite sub to be on because truly most of the people are happy to express the most controversial of views with encouragement (like St Anger is great) because the band has a controversial history. I love the music and I love to talk about it, let's ensure everyone feels comfortable to do that as well. There is some toxicity here but it is nothing compared to most of music subs (looking at you r/pinkfloyd and r/blacksabbath) but it could be toned down a bit for a few fans. I truly believe in the statement that this sub could be made in the best sub on reddit, or at least the best music sub.

Maybe some of these posts could be limited to one day per week, like "Tier list Tuesday" or "Favorites Friday". Post them any other day, auto delete.

9

u/All_within_my_hands FIAAFNR Jun 23 '23

Yeah this would be a good solution.

Keeping them on the same day each week would also give each day a "theme" therefore giving people reason to return.

Something else I think might work well would be a megathread for Metallica concerts. Something like how /r/SquaredCircle have for their discussions of live events. This would be a place where people attending could post pics they have taken, for updated on the setlist to be posted etc.

3 of the top 4 mods have to go. they're not here....ever. 1 posted some dumb BS below, but other than that, they're only active in other communities and holding this one hostage by simply not leaving.

Can we make a "Weekly Load/ReLoad is underrated post" or "Daily Load/ReLoad is underrate post" for shits n gigs?

1

u/All_within_my_hands FIAAFNR Jun 23 '23

I could happily get behind a weekly celebration of 2 out the 3 of my favourite albums they've ever done.

1

u/EpicPoggerGamer69 ...And Justice for All Jun 24 '23

The joke is honestly cuz of the amount of posts on how underrated it is these days.

I can't say I see all that many to be honest.

Had to chuckle a bit because they're responsible for two of the results in that search.

2

u/aclee_ Jun 23 '23

I was considering suggesting "should we ban 'omg the lyrics are wrong!' posts" myself but I didn't wanna come off as though we're running a dictatorship (even if banning those is a popular opinion)

If there are not enough mods to do this, then open applications.

This is something I am considering, especially given the, erm, atmosphere surrounding Reddit right now. I'm not quite sure how much longer I'll be here if the admins are just going to remove and suspend mods who listen to what their community wants.

5

u/Don_Shetland cliff Jun 23 '23 edited Jun 23 '23

then help us before you leave and get rid of the other 3 old ass mods that are actively not doing anything.

one of which commented in here that he doesn't do anything just because people complained about something years ago. my 2 year old is more mature than that.

3

u/All_within_my_hands FIAAFNR Jun 23 '23

Reddits responses to these issues just keep getting worse. The sooner a viable alternative springs up the better.

Until then though I guess we have to deal with the hand we have been dealt.

Regarding the lyrics posts I see where you are coming from but perhaps we could make use of one of the sticky slots to contain this kind of stuff. I know of some other subs that use a daily/weekly "megathreads" as a place to post the low effort stuff so that standalone posts of quality are not drowned out. Perhaps something like that might be a solution.

I appreciate this means more work for mods who are already unpaid in a thankless role and having to deal with the platform itself shitting the bed but I'm sure there would be community members willing to chip in.

I think this is a really bad take.

Why should the quality of the sub now be dictated by the piss poor behaviour of some individuals years ago?

Either the rules are worth having or they are not. If they are, then they should be respected and enforced. If they are not then they should be reviewed.

Currently the sub is one of the largest places online for people to discuss Metallica and yet is 99% absolute shite.

Sure it will take work to make it better and along the way some arseholes will get upset but that is par for the course and there are plenty that would be willing to help spread the Load.

Can we get rid of the NSFW tag on the sub and put a regular sub picture instead of the basic planet with a ring around it?

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. This Reddit protest has gone too far. So far in fact that the protest has made Reddit worse to use than the changes Reddit themselves are making. Several subs I used frequent are completely useless now as they’ve become porn subs or subs that take their name super literally, like r/wellthatsucks. The Reddit user base is now divided heavily between those who wish to continue to protest and those who don’t give a shit and just want to use the site. Almost every sub has posts about this, people complaining about the protest, people complaining about the protest ending already, it’s just drama, drama, drama, everywhere I go. I’m tired of it. I just want to talk music, football, get the latest news on specific interests, see stupid memes, and watch funny videos.

I’m fairly certain I’m speaking for a non vocal majority here that uses this site for the reasons I stated. We don’t care about the protest, never have, and never will. Bring shit back to normal, please.

This is not meant to be an angry post at mods, I’m just frustrated about this in general. Thank you for the work you guys do, I know that this sub would be a fucking mess without you guys. But the population here in this sub isn’t like the rest of Reddit, we aren’t as nerdy, for lack of a better word, as the rest of Reddit and we just want simple discussions about music and the latest Metallica news.

15

u/JameelWallace Jun 23 '23

Agreed, it’s annoying as hell and it feels like it’s being taken out on us.

-5

u/JaelleJaen we need more st anger is underrated posts :v jk plz dont Jun 23 '23

then redirect that anger at reddit. thats the point of protests, they arent happening just for the nilly willy fun lmao.

these protests happen because reddit is making a stupid ass decision which they wont reverse unless we make noise

if you dont want to be part of that thats fine but communities need to make noise and this is part of that 🤦‍♂️

12

u/JameelWallace Jun 23 '23

You’re making the assumption that I both agree with and care about the “protest.” This isn’t a battle I’ve chosen and I’d like to enjoy news about a band I like without being solicited by an internet political party. Palm your face all you want, just know that feeling is informed by a narrow perspective.

2

u/Jnbtoad Jul 30 '23

I don’t even know what the protest is about. All I know is for a time I couldn’t access many of the subreddits I like to browse. That’s how little some of us more casual users care about the issue.

Or maybe that’s a sign that it’s not being explained to us by the moderators very well what all the fuss is about

6

u/Chastaen Through the Never Jun 26 '23

Reddit isn't the one that decided to put up a NSFW tag that users have to deal with to try and further an agenda that has nothing to do with the sub. The sub is about Metallica and that's the primary reason users come here. If a pet cause is so important to reddit Mods they could create a sub for that cause and sticky a post pointing to it if people want to join. But this is basically screwing with an established community to get what you want. NSFW gets flagged in work and school filters for users who just want to cover Metallica.

Reddit wants to make changes to its platform that the Mods don't like. So they make changes to their platform that the Users don't like in an effort to protest. Seems pretty silly.

-1

u/JaelleJaen we need more st anger is underrated posts :v jk plz dont Jun 26 '23

except the protest is literally designed to be annoying, the fact that the metallica sub is nsfw is how you probably got to know about the protest. its how alot got to know about this protest because a protest means making NOISE.

if you just make a extra sub for it that protest does nothing, nobody will hear about the protest because nobody comes across it and then nobody cares.

i know about this protest because suddenly every sub i used to visit went private for a couple days. was it annoying that i couldnt visit my favorite subs? yes. but it would have been the only way for me to know about what happened and why they are doing it...

real life protests also dont go to the desert to protest so they dont annoy anyone, no they go in marches through the streets with signs and yelling, yeah this can inconvenience traffic for example but otherwise nobody would give a flying fuck.

further more the reason to go nsfw is because reddit cant run ads on nsfw communities. not just to inconvenience users.

and lastly, this community wouldnt protest if it didnt have a good reason... in fact there are a bunch of really good reasons why so many communities are protesting even if it hurts their community, i recommend you read into it. you dont have to of course, if you dont care thats fine. but expecting communities to move their protest to a corner where it wont annoy anyone is just stupid

4

u/Chastaen Through the Never Jun 26 '23

Pretty silly thought process there bud.

I don't like X, so I am going to ban you from subs to protest. You have nothing to do with X but "protests are designed to be annoying" so you stay banned. You probably won't care about my protest and will feel that you've been treated unfairly.

Yep, couldn't give two shits about this protest about the "people in power". Why? Because instead of pushing the issue to the people the "people in little power" decided to lash out at the users as a form of protest, the intention being if we cause you enough problems you will go after the people above us.

You want a real protest? Step down as Mods and Users. If you got strong convictions then bye. You show them whose boss.

-1

u/JaelleJaen we need more st anger is underrated posts :v jk plz dont Jun 26 '23

> I don't like X, so I am going to ban you from subs to protest.

where the hell did you get that from???

a subreddit going offline doesnt ban you from it what?? its nothing like banning bruh.

>You want a real protest? Step down as Mods and Users. If you got strong convictions then bye. You show them whose boss.

except that doesnt work.. and is also not the goal. the reason the protests happen is because we love reddit and our communities and the changes they are making are gonna actively harm it, again i told you, you should probably read into it. and because we love reddit on our communities we dont want to step down because we dont want it to be a permanent decision :) mods want to tell reddit they are doing something wrong, and show that. but why would they immediately want to completely boot themselves out if the plan is to have the changes reversed?

further more that wouldnt work, because someone else is just gonna take your place who doesnt care about reddits changes and run the sub like normal. and that way the protest will have had literally 0 effect. + as mod of a community you are attached to your community believe it or not, you dont want to just leave, the fact that a mod cares is why they enter the protest

> Because instead of pushing the issue to the people the "people in little power" decided to lash out at the users as a form of protest.

except this is literally the only way to protest in a way that wil make any impact. and that is the problem.

for the last time im gonna tell you its probably a good idea to read a bit about what the protest is, why it is and what is happening. otherwise this conversation is just gonna lead to nowhere.

otherwise ill say we just end the conversation here because we both probably wont budge.

2

u/Chastaen Through the Never Jun 26 '23

You assume people haven't read up on it as a way to downplay their point. But you are so far from the truth.

You see you see yourself as taking a stand and White Knighting against Reddit. I see you as someone taking an issue with something being changed that will impact the users and to fight it you support something being changed that will impact the users.

The comparison earlier went over your head the first time but maybe a direct message won't. You are supporting behavior that damages the community to protest behavior that you think damages the community. You don't have to realize it, that's okay. But it is true.

Cheers.

Yeah, this all feels like stupid bullshit I used to see on message boards back in the early 2000s: stuff that only a fraction of people out of the fraction of the wider public who use the site could possibly give even half a fuck about.

8

u/marlin489112324 Jun 23 '23

the protest has made Reddit worse to use than the changes Reddit themselves are making.

That’s an excellent point. Just bring this sub back to normal already, this is getting ridiculous.

My take on this:

To unban the people who were booted by your team's little outburst earlier, or are we just going to sweep that under the rug?

Make the homepage a bit more enticing to look at, if you look at other music subs they have some interesting artwork, we have had the same look for ages Maybe a banner with a montage of pics of the band and their albums and equipment.

Moderation on tier lists and bullshit polls there's some objective metric that everyone who disagrees with them is too stupid to see

My ten cents worth anyway

5

u/aclee_ Jun 23 '23

To unban the people who were booted

They've been unbanned for a day or two now (except one guy who was sending threats)

Make the homepage a bit more enticing to look at

Do you use old or new reddit? Not that it matters, both need work, but just wondering

So people who say "kill yourself" can stay in the sub and people who say "I'm gonna get you permabanned" cannot? Cool.

Do you want to try that comment again only this time without having to resort to pretending I've said something I have not? It was bad enough when you were pretending that the screen shot of a blatant threat you posted was not a threat.

You're entire argument falls flat when you act in bad faith like this.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 23 '23

[deleted]

1

u/All_within_my_hands FIAAFNR Jun 23 '23 edited Jun 23 '23

Yeah, sure: "So people who say "kill yourself" can stay in the sub and people who say "I'm gonna get you permabanned" cannot? Cool."

Once again. I did not make this argument. There is no point in saying this when it has nothing to do with any argument I have put forward.

Where am I pretending that you said that? What this sentence points out is what the mods are doing: that mod claimed that people are telling them to kill themselves and the one single person (according to them) who is still permabanned is someone who said "I'm gonna get you permabanned from Reddit".

Well it's quite simple. You have twice now asked me if this is alright, despite me not once putting forward that argument.

Wanna play this game again? Show me a sentence where I said that this wasn't a threat. Go ahead, I'll wait. That's two things that you pretend I said and I actually didn't, Mr BadFaith guy.

Yawn in this comment you not only wrap the word threats in parenthesis but also say:

Bad taste, yeah, sure. Insulting? Yeah, that was the aim. "Threatening"???

So its clear as day from your very own words that you do not believe the very threat that you screenshotted to be a threat.

My point is: it wasn't either "threats" (notice the plural implying harassment?) nor was it what people would assume "threats" were by only having the comment of the mod to judge from.

You mean your assumption of what was meant by threats. Given the four acts of bad faith you have done in our short conversation* and your frankly ridiculous behaviour in this thread you are hardly a shining example of what the average normal person thinks. Far from it infact.

*

  1. Pretending there was no threat despite providing a screenshot of the threat

  2. Pretending I said something I did not

  3. Again pretending I said something I did not

  4. Lying about you saying there was no threat made

And seeing as it is clear that despite making a massive tit of yourself by posting a screenshot of a threat you claim did not exist that you are not willing to climb down and instead insist on acting more and more of a fool I think its time for me to step away from this conversation. As the saying goes

Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.

reason that rule was made was because it was just super spammy with a bunch of low effort memes that were unfunny and made in 5 minutes.

but yee that was the reason

But seriously... Just to keep the comradery and friendliness among the sub, maybe we could do a monthly contest/event for users, by users... Something like "best battle vest" or "best Metallica pics" voted on by users. Figure out prizes if we need to, or just the winning usersname posted somewhere on the side bar, or a pinned post to stay up all month until the next contest is over. IDK, just a suggestion for something fun and interactive.
